Neen, my first rural CJ!

Hello everyone, this will be a small CJ about my regio Neen, which actually means 'no' in Dutch. It doesn't have a specific reason, but you have to come up with some name, eh?

First I'll show you a region picture where the development will start.

neen11157281658xk.png

The region is actually much larger, but I couldn't get a picture of it that large. It's all landscaped and terraformed by hand, with the tools Maxis gave me.

As we speak the region has 18.000, with everyone concentrated in the 'Lemmers' area. Lemmers was the most important city in the middle-ages, but as time went other cities took over that title.

Here you see the north side of the Lemmers area.

lemmers20aug7311158180046sv.png

This is east.

lemmers18sep7311158180226un.png

And this is a small island not forgotten to mention.

lemmers23mrt7411158180889ih.png

South and west are mainly water, a waste of bandwith to show here. In the next update I'll tell you something about every city, if the reactions are promising. Till next,

@ Exil3: However I am Dutch myself, I don't like to build what I already see everyday. Ofcourse you will probably see some Dutch influences, but all comes mainly from my own fantasy

@ Aleking: Thanks, I got inspired by life on an airplane from Radioheadfan. You should go and check it out!

@ Nealos101: Thank you, I will update tomorrow. I will show you one or more cities which are important to the region. I will also try to tell something about it's history. When the region get's finished (it's terraforming is not ready yet) I will post some pictures made with this tool, if I can find out how it works...

And to the others, who haven't replied yet, please comment, I need your feedback! It's my first CJ remember?

@ Frogface: Maybe the names sound Dutch, but they aren't. They mostly come straigt from my imagination!

@ Sc4meister: Not completely influenced, I only got the idea I should start rural cities from reading and looking at 'Life on an airplane'. Anyway, I hope to see you around here again!

That's something different from our flat country, isn't it?

@ Radioheadfan: I am glad to see you found my CJ! I am especially fond to know how you like it, so don't go yet, Ok?

Just like most of the names they all come straight out of my imagination. The fact that Lemmer is a real Dutch village didn't come to my mind at that moment.

@ All: I'll have a new update in a few more minutes, just have to make some screenshots and some writing, please stay tuned!

@ jacqulina: Thanks, your comments are much appreciated!

Right now the only thing that reminds of this history is the late roman church on top of the highest hill in the region. It's the St. Lucius Church, nearly 1400 years old, and still standing, due to intensive preservation by the civillians.

    lemmers28apr7511158908152oe.png

The harbour must be at least this old, because the stones of which this church was built, can't be found in the region, so transport by ship was obvious. The small harbour now only is used for commuters who don't like the train, tourists, and fishermen.

    lemmers8apr7511158907980kb.png

When you get here by ship, you must have noticed that the hills near the road to Lemmers are full of flowers.

    lemmers8apr7511158907842hs.png

Here is the railway station, north of the town of Lemmers.

    lemmers25jun7511158908490vt.png

Lemmers had a duke for almost 500 years, untill the villagers and farmers got sick of him and killed him. Now the villa of the duke is used as the mayor's residence. As you can see the mayor has a great view over Lemmer's bay, and is it accompanied with a great landscape.

    lemmers12aug7511158909163bg.png

Well, for now that's all about the town of Lemmers. In the next update I will tell you something about a different town. As always, comments are highly appreciated and replied to 16.gif Hope to hear from you soon!

Great concept!  I really like the region, and how you really distinguish between all the little communities/towns you have...looks great!  I love rural shots in CJs and I'm really looking foward to a really rural one.  Keep it up! 44.gif

@ Simworld 056132: I'm glad you like this CJ so far, but I have to disappoint you: only one update a day. People should be able to catch up on this CJ. I hope the comments can keep it alive for one day.

@ Nardo69: Okay I'm warned 31.gif The villagers of Lemmers are already making plans to celebrate your next arrival!

@ gmac_oboe: It's great you like the concept and all, but I can't promise you this CJ will stay 100 % rural. I really love to build large cities, so I think there might be one at the end of this CJ... If you want to know for sure, I suggest you keep following it 2.gif

@ All: As you might have read in my reply to Simworld 056132 I will update once a day, so stay tuned for tomorrow's edition!

Your towns are just too cute. 35.gif I'd like to see close-ups of that island. Have you really been working on this for 74 years? You must have a lot of patience and be working very carefully. 2.gif

@ Shootthemagpies: Great! I'm sure you wil like the next update!

    @ djrules5454_simtropolisedition: Thanks!

@ mayormommy: We will get to that island later on, personally I would prefer to live there, but you know about the Duke... 2.gif I did work about it for 75 years, every road is laid with care for detail, but this city has also been running a few years on it's own without my interference.

This is old Klundershaven. Around 1850 it was the most imporant city of Lemmers, as it overtook Lemmers' title. It became so important because of it's harbour, but when the waterlevel dropped, no boat could get to the city anymore. The bay became a lake, and the lake eventually ran dry. Now this city only benefits from commercial services and tourism.

    lemmers28apr4ky.jpg

This is the new part of Klundershaven, it is situated more inland, because the wind can be awfull at old Klundershaven. As you probably can see this part is already larger than the old part, and people expect old and new to grow to one city.

    lemmers23mei2gu.jpg

Here you can see the entrance of the old bay, with the railwaybridge.

    lemmers7jun5ym.jpg

This was friday's update, I hope to get a new update for tomorrow, I can't promise you anything, but I'll do my best. Please stay tuned!

    WOW, nice updates!
That lake in the last picture looks a bit dried out though, heh looks cool! And I can see that you have really specialized in building small towns, wich is very european, looks good too!
I enjoyed this update, keep it up!

Nice CJ you've got there. 44.gif

For some reason, it reminds me of SC2000 cities; you could have a med-rise town without having to have tons of low-rise all over the region, like you do in SC4.

    Keep it going! 19.gif

@ jacqulina: Thanks, I hope to see you stick around 1.gif

@ ExiL3: That lake IS dried out, it is actually the bay that provided acces to Klundershaven's harbour. I am not really specialized in building small towns, it's my first time. Hope to see you again with the next update tomorrow!

@ cctoide: The whole map contains about 17.500 villagers, which should be enough to enforce mediumsized development. Ofcourse I also plopped a few buildings, but they are just there for the looks.

Everybody thanks for watching, even when you're not commenting. I hope to see you all around at the next update tomorrow! 39.gif

Hey, dit is echt gaaf man!

Hey, this is really cool dude! 44.gif It is nice to see that you place the towns on the higher parts of the region, just like in real life (those hills are called terpen right?).

'terpen' are villages built on hills, and those hills are made by men to protect them against the water. In this CJ the hills aren't made by mankind, but by nature, so you can't speak of 'terpen' here. The villagers just chose the highest spot in the region to settle.

As always, more comments are appreciated!

Ohyeah, that was it! Thanks for clearing that up 1.gif But these towns were built higher up for the same reasons is it not? To protect from water?

I think that's true. It can get pretty heavy here during stormy weather. When it's tide and the wind is on it's right place, all low-placed villages are drowning. So you build on top of the hill.

@ RadioheadFan In that case you're lucky, the next update is here!

    Update # 3!!

Today we will be touring along the islands at the coast of Lemmers. The first island we'll be visiting is also the largest, it's Meeuweneiland.

    lemmers8mei1nh.jpg

It has a population of about 400 people, and is based around an old monastry. It isn't exactly as well kept as the cathedral of Lemmers because of the nasty weather. Maybe you can spot the ru
