SimCity Sequel Enrages Fans

http://news.portalit.net/fullnews_SimCity-Sequel-Enrages-Fans_2697.html

Usually, the news of a sequel entering development is good news for the fans of the series. Then again, every now and then an exception pops up and reminds everyone that choosing the right developer is one of the most important thing.quote>

As expected, Tilted Mill working on SimCity Societies has been flagged as “terrible news” and forum thread "You killed Sim City!" is evidence enough.quote>

Maxis abandons SimCity 5

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=165432

Fans are unexpectedly not very happy about the developer shift, posting a barrage of heated messages on Tilted Mill's official forums.quote>

I did like this part:

We've currently hammering EA's PR department with the CVG bat phone, so expect more SimCity 5 gubbins very soon.quote>

I guess it has it's good points - getting the word out definitely helps the likelihood, I think, of the game getting improved.

I wish these kinds of articles would make it to a really important site, like IGN

"I do not want to mislead anyone: This SC is not a realistic urban simulation, which I understand, to many, represents the heart of what SC is. No one is blind to that. And if you're just completely turned off, even angered by the mere notion of any game called "SimCity" that is not a detailed, realistic urban simulator, I absolutely understand that viewpoint, and absolutely respect it. Passionate fans like you are the lifeblood of the gaming industry, and that is one reason why TMill provides what I think is a great outlet for this type of discussion and even complaint. But please keep in mind the irony in that - we are just a lowly developer after all."

In other words: "We're going to develop this game how we want, we don't care that fans hate the gameplay, graphics, or transition in game type"

AHEM!

New update by Chris in the TM forums.

....There is one thing I must clarify or correct, though, because I have already apparently introduced some confusion with my earlier post. Some of you have said, in response to my post, things like, "...as they were quoted saying this is NOT a City Simulator...", etc.

For what it's worth I'll accept whatever responsibility there is for that misunderstanding. I should not have said, "this is not..." then listed a bunch of things, as if the game was not any of those things. I meant, instead, that that phrase in its entirety does not accurately characterize what this game is about, or what makes it unique.

So I must make it crystal clear that, like all SimCity games, this game is a city-building game. It is a city-building simulation. It is a city simulation. It is an urban simulation game. It is a game in which you build cities. Its focus is not on realism and detail (but that's not to say it lacks those things either).....quote>

Because it happens. People make mistakes. That is life.

It's good that we now know what Chris meant when he made his first statement. I, after thinking through what the game could include, am now rather intrigued by it and am rather looking forward to the finished product!

Do us proud Tilted Mill! Hold up high the infinitely burning torch that is SimCity once again!

either he didn't know the magnitude of the response it would bring...

or the new comment is an example of spin-doctory?

See where all of our pissing and moaning has gotten us? We're being heard! Stand up and say what you've got to say! You will be heard, don't let all of these "Stop whining!" people stop you. You have a voice, if you've got something to say, something you want to speak out against, use that voice! We are the fans and we are powerful! 9.gif

Oh lawd, I've seen the error of my ways. All the moaning has caused a developer to clarify on a statement that was grotesquely misinterpreted and blown out of proportion by angry fans. Fight the machine, we have the power!

That's great to hear, this should be posted on the main page to correct some of the confusion that the last comment made.

I don't blame him entirely for it. Maybe not at all. Worse mistakes have fallen with a thud from the mouths of the most benevolent people in history. Did the speaker speak wrong? Or did the listeners listen wrong? Frankly, I don't care who's to "blame." It was a misunderstanding, clearly. And an understandable misunderstanding at that. Yet still, he's offering to personally shoulder the blame - whether it's his to take or not - that shows a lot of class, in my opinion.

Hopefully enough folks will recognize that alone. It would be pretty cool to have a close partnering relationship with the artists of our favorite past-time. It can only serve to make the future brighter for all SimCity fans, old and new.

Now, hopefully the major TV news networks (CNN, FOX, ABC, NBC, etc.)will pick it up.

The "clarification" does sound better. I'm hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst.

Well not exactly IGN, Fox or ABC, Gamespot has some new simcity coverage. However their article doesn't say much about the fan backlash. Maybe we can change that.
