hey, does anyone make cities which isnt all just grid pattern? Cause sometimes the grid can be pretty boring and unrealistic but i guess it gives good commute and its simpler. But if you have broke the grid and used other style patterns for your road network, plz show pics of them.9.gif

you can make a city while not using grid patterns. however, the grid pattern allows you to pack in a lot of zones and not waste space. so a lot of people use grid patterns for "downtown", higher density areas and break off from grid patterns when designing suburban style areas/cities.

Unfortunately, the grid only allows angles in multiple of 45°.  However, with diligence, you can get something like this:

Grid pattern? Fuh-get uh-bout it! Ask BlondeTwiggy if having a grid is necessary...she'll set you straight 2.gif. And tarkus and dedgren and crew are working to help make it obsolete.

Just because you have to build on a grid doesn't mean you can only build a grid...2.gif

<Edit>

Oh...show pictures.  Forgot about that part...

I'll tell you this much: hills and mountains really help you to break the grid.  This is a mountainside that I'm currently developing:

Here's an older picture of an already-developed hilltop to prove my point (ignore the country club):

    offgreen, its that its the same boring pattern all the way across the city. But the picture is that N_O_Body posted is what i was talking about. different angles and stuff. instead of having squares all the way across your region.

    An easy way to break the grid is to make a grid and then break it in a few places and make some odd connections (diagonal), or make the rectangles different sizes.

    just place a road where ever the heck you want to, diagonal or strait, but on mountains its almost never grid like, its not unrealistic, if you look at most of the bigger cities in the world, you will notice a grid pattern among their streets. Its simple and uniform.

    works great for people who are unawair that they cant driive.

    The problem is the game has all building with 90 degrees angles so thing will never look like they could in real life, always just a little strange. Thats where the fundamental part comes in.

    what a stupid thing to say of course its possible just place diagonal streets, roads and avenues there IS such a feature. you have just used a simplistic way of looking at it and playing the game by believing that only your approach is right

    Really quite simple.  You need the latest NAM with Rush Hour/Deluxe.  There are even helper pieces in this edition.  You can get all kinds of diagonal streets, but only at a multiple of  45°
