I've been playing for a while now but all cities I've made ends up with some serious traffic problems so I looked around for some help and found this site. I looked through some of the topics here and realised there is alot of different mods and everyone seems to have them. What mods do you think is most importent and how do I solve my traffic problems?

One more question.  Public transportation. How do I make my sims use them and which is the best? When I try for example subways no one use them.

The Omnibus would be a really good place to start. There are a lot of good articles there that would help answer your questions.

install NAM with the perfect pathfinding option and let your city run for a few months. Then if you still have alot of problems you need to consider how you can help your sims the best in getting from where they live to where they work.

Even with NAM, all your traffic woes will not disapper.  You will need an extensive public transportation infrastructure.  Place a lot of bus stations (and I mean a lot).  Also use subway, rail, elevated rail and even monorail.  If you place several type of stations together this will allow sims to transfer from on type to another.  This will increase the use and effiency of your public transport system.  Good luck.

When placing mass transit that involves a sim walking to it, you need to place bus stops roughly every 6 to 8 spaces. Also, look into custom BATS like the Ninja Kiosk and the MMSB station to maximize usage. The are combo stations: the first is train/parking/bus/subway and the second is monorail/parking/bus/subway.

Needless to say, get the NAM. Do not get Traffic Cop if you get the NAM, and the NAM is king of the hill for this type of mod.

Also, for general traffic congestion, pay close attention to how your sims are traveling. One of the biggest problems are sims using neighborhood streets as shortcuts, bypassing roads, avenues and highways. You often have to FORCE them to take a certain path, so occasionally you want to sever these through-streets, or impose tollgates to deter them from a particular route.

Yes thats the way do it. I once had a city that had 300,000+ residents that I destroyed because Traffic was driving me nuts. It is a constant problem. Good luck with your traffic woes.

One trick I use is I don't make four-way intersections at all. If I have to, I'll do an occasional roundabout (available with the NAM) for a four-way, but otherwise I use three-way intersections for 99% of my intersections in my city. I don't know of anyone else that does this but with the way I use bus stations and the occasional subway system for really dense downtown cores, my traffic congestion is almost completely green, even in my million sim or larger cities. I'll get some intersections that will yellow a little, but that little trick really helps keep the traffic problems down, for me anyways. BTW, I don't use any mods and when I installed the NAM, I used perfect pathfinding only.

But even if you don't want to do my intersection trick, keep it in mind because there will be times when it's a great solution for those high congestion four-way intersections.

Create a expressway network, if there isn't room then in the middle cities make the highway a tunnel if you get what I mean?
