    HONG KONG

Hong Kong is known as one of the two special administrative regions of the People's Rebublic of China, along with Macau. The region of Hong Kong is located on the eastern side of the Pearl River Delta and contains over 260 islands, with Central, being the crowded financial district. Central Hong Kong has, arguably, the world's greatest skyline. The North Shore of the bustling island is crammed full of skyscrapers, and is home to some of the most cutting edge buildings ever constructed. Hong Kong is known for the practice of feng shui, movies, modern architecture, water, mountains, transport, bridges, music and a mixture of world cultures, commonly referred as 'The city where the East meets West'. Due to the Treaty of Nanking created at the end of The First Opium War between Britain and China, Hong Kong was a dependent territory of the United Kingdom from 1842 until 1997, however, it still maintains its own legal system based on English common practices. Thanks to its capitalist economy built on a policy of free market, low taxation, and government non-intervention, it is an important center for international finance and trade. To respond to the high demand and low space in Central, most things are vertically oriented, from the skyscrapers to the double decker buses and streetcars.

Located in Wai Chai District of Central Hong Kong, Central Plaza is the second tallest skyscraper in Hong Kong, with a height of 374 meters. It is only surpassed by 2 International Finance Center. Central Plaza has an interesting design with a triangular floor plan, and the top of the tower contains a four-bar neon clock that indicates the time by displaying different colors. When it opened in 1992, It was the tallest building in Asia, and maintained its title until 1996, when the Shun Hing Square in Shenzhen was completed.

Opened in 2004 in the mainland section of Hong Kong, Kowloon, Langham Place is a 3-1 shopping mall, hotel and office tower. Developed by the Great Eagle Group and the Urban Renewal Authority of Hong Kong, Langham Place office Tower is currently the tallest building in Kowlon and Mong Kok with a height of 255 meters. The complex houses a massive 15 story mall, all access-able with the longest escalators within a shopping mall in the world.

Located on top of Vitoria Peak Mountain are many apartment buildings, restaurants, and shops.

Tsing Ma Bridge is the world's sixth largest suspension bridge. It was designed by Mott MacDonald and construction work began in May 1992 and ended in May 1997. The bridge contains two decks that carries road and rail traffic, which also makes it the largest suspension bridge of its type. It has a span of 1,377 meters and a height of 206 meters. Today, The bridge serves as an important gateway to Lantaum, the home to a 85-foot-high bronze buddha outsdoor statue, The Airport, and a way to reach Hong Kong Disneyland, a major tourist attraction.

International Finance Centre is an integrated commercial development on the waterfront of the Central district of Hong Kong. Completed in 2003, Tower 2 became the tallest building in Hong Kong and the 3rd tallest building in the Greater China Region and the 7th tallest office building in the world. The complex is built entirely on reclaimed land, as part of a $40 billion complex for a central station and Airport Express Line.

The Bank of China Tower is one of the most recognized skyscrapers in Central Hong Kong. It houses the headquarters of the Bank of China. It was designed by architect A. M. Pei. The building is 315 meters high with two masts reaching 369 meters. The 70 story building was built in 1989 and was the tallest building in Hong Kong and Asia from 1989-1992, and it was the first building outside the United States to break the 305 meter [1,000 feet] mark.

The Harbourside [blue tower] is a 255 meter tall skyscraper located in Union Square complex in the area of Kowloon in Hong Kong. Construction of the 75 story building began in 2000 and was completed in 2003. The building is actually 3 towers joined at the base, however, from a-far it seems it is simply one building. The Union Square project will be finished in 2010 with the completion of International Commerce Centre, a 118 story skyscraper that will become Hong Kong's tallest.

The Hong Kong Shanghai Bank headquarters building is located along the southern side of Statue Square in Central Hong Kong. The previous building was built in 1935 and demolished in 1978 to make way for the current building. The current building was designed by British architect Norman Foster and built by Wimpey Construction. The building is 180 meters high with 47 stories of office space. The British settlers that founded HSBC believed in Feng Shui, so when constructing their headquarters, they kept many of the philosophies in mind. It is beleived that a building should have its back to the mountain and its front overlooking the harbor. The designers of the HSBC HQ bought the land in front of the building 150 years ago so no one could block their view, the building has perfect feng shui. Today, HSBC is one of the most profitable banks in the world.

    Daniel-
Oh geeze. This is brilliant. The way you take your pictures make the cities look so bright and very inviting. The nights shots are great and the Pacific Palace looks really cool! I also really like the Haborside skyscraper. Three years to build? I would think it would take longer.
Anyways, I really enjoyed the update. I cannot wait to see DC in a few updates. And I cannot wait to see the next update (because I know what city it is!!) shhh... I won't tell... 3.gif
