Maybe Pooh was frolicking in the flower fields without any underwear again... forget this part.

I'm guessing some natural disaster is about to happen. Just a guess.

Bees are not the only pollinators, just the most prolific and additionally beneficial with their honey.

A German study was reported on yesterday's news that indicated that bees are becoming disoriented and fail to return to the hive due to cell phone radiation.  Wouldn't it be a disaster to all the communication freaks if they had to give up their electronic leash?  Time to sell your shares in RIM, maybe?

Imagine.  Anyone caught with a cell phone in the countryside could be lynched.  Almost as bad as a horse thief.  Hang 'em up, I say!

the reason honey bees are dissapering is becaus of GLOBAL WARMING. all this freaky weather

is disorienting animals and nature in general throughout the whole world.

I live in Manhattan, there was a report of a giant whale that stranded in the brooklyn, gowanus canal!

Imagine that! a whale in new york city.

(although this could have also been attributed to the recent freaky storm that passed a week ago)

still its cause of the weather...

A whale in the Gowanus Canal? I didn't think anything other than mosquito larvae could live in that polluted mess. It's probably a bit cleaner than it was 30 years ago when it was raw sewage, chemicals and a little bit of water.

why would anyone have a cell phone in the first place. according to my teacher, the only reason anyone has a cell phone is so that their wife/mom can check on where they are.

"where are you honey?"

"at home depot, looking for power tools"

"okay"

5 minutes later

"where are you honey?"...

This is actually a very serious occurrence, and I am not sure people fully understand the implications. I agree with a previous poster who indicated that some studies are beginning to show that cellular protocols are disrupting signals that bees depend upon to go about their business.

This scenario is not the first. There is at least one, and likely several, lawsuits currently moving forward in the US to stop the Navy's new usage of ultra-low frequency sound, which is causing large disruptions in whale migrations.

Bees are the largest group of pollinators on the planet, and many plants are dependent on them to assist in pollination and plant reproduction.

The article says it best:

Since about one-third of the U.S. diet depends on pollination and most of that is performed by honeybees, this constitutes a serious problem, according to Jeff Pettis of the U.S. Agricultural Research Service.quote>

This creates quite a problem. In today's times, people seem to be dependent on their cellphones. They just can't live without them. I am not sure of the repercussions this will have, but I think things could get really ugly in both directions if something isn't figured out, and figured out soon.

There are just too many pressures on our natural world. Too many things are going awry.

Your teacher's a fool. here are plenty of other purposes cellphones serve. For one thing, they're more convenient than regular phones because they're smaller and because you can take them anywhere. It's a ot easier to just pull out your cell phone and call someone than to have to find a phone to use. Also, if you're not home, a cell phone provides a means of getting in contact with you right then and there, as opposed to having to leave a message and wait for them to get home... which, while in most cases isn't that bad of a thing, in emergencies is most certainly a problem. And, well, if you can dial 911 on your cell phone when you think your having a heart attack as opposed to having to find a phone, or relying on that someone else will see you're in distress and call for you... that could mean the difference between life and death.

As for cell phone signals being the reason for the bee disappearances, somehow I doubt it. After all, if that were the cause, why did we only start seeing this last year? Cell phones have been around longer than that. And they didn't just pop out of the blue one day, either, they gradually proliferated and become more used. So were that the cause, you'd expect to see bees having started to have disappeared in the 90's, and having it gradually become more and more of a problem since then, not all of a sudden just become a problem.

A problem that occurred all of a sudden must have had a cause that occurred all of a sudden. How likely is it that the bees were tolerating it up until last year and then all of a sudden started deciding "you know what? I've had enough of this. Lemme go disappear"? 21.gif

Mabey since these new cells phone use a different  broadcasting technology then the one's from the 90's? Plus there  number of these new phones in use has just exploded

in the last couple years, and they are being used more  often then before as well with texting, pics and such  being sent to and fro.

I don't think so. Chances are, not many people in rural areas have ipods. And the apple buds are crap. They can't hold a candle to wind, or in fact, any other sound, really. The bees can't hear them unless they attacked a person.

I wont buy the cell phone connection until they can prove its not one gazillion other causes such as mites, disease, stress, pesticides, genetically altered crops, drought, global warming, etc. Many scientists are already dismissing the phone radiation connection.

Personally, I hate people who have the mentality "I don't like something so they should ban it".  Obviously there are a lot of technology haters out there who are fueling this and the countless blatant myths about cell phone radiation.

If cell phones are the cause, I wonder what steps could be taken?

Maybe the amount of information sent could be limited and sent in shorter bursts to limit the amount of radiation a single phone to 25% of what it is now. That way phone use could double and we'd still be halving the amount of radiation, putting us back to levels of a few years ago.

Is it possible that solar flares that have been very reactive lately are inteferring with the bee's navigation systems just like GPS and mobile phones?( They rely on magnetic fields which are warped by solar flares. Some birds become confused after solar flares.)

Yes, global warming could be a factor to, aswell as many other things.

A fungus is likely to have played a large part in the bee disappearance.

A fungus that caused widespread loss of bee colonies in Europe and Asia may be playing a crucial role in the mysterious phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder that is wiping out bees across the United States, UC San Francisco researchers said Wednesday.

Researchers have been struggling for months to explain the disorder, and the new findings provide the first solid evidence pointing to a potential cause.quote>

There could be a number of factors for the disappearance of these bees. It is a very unusual occurance, and is more alarming than you might think. It could be due to invasive species moving in and overwhelming bee populations. It could be weather patterns and climate change. It could be cell phones or low-frequency navy sonar (or whatever the other poster was talking about.) Regardless, bees form an integral part of the ecosystem for all forms of pollinating plants, especially those that flower.

This news is disturbing and I attribute it to the many changes in our climate and ecosystems due to abrupt climate change -- it's precisely the type of phenomenon that scientists have been predicting. Whatever the cause, it needs further research and study. I don't like bees, but their importance is fundamental to almost every ecosystem on the planet.

Aw, poor bees! Why are they deserving of dislike? I only ask because I used to hate them with a passion, but I came to my senses. If I saw a bee, I would kill it, same with wasps and spiders. I overcame my dislike of bees, once I understood that they don't give a rat's posterior about me. They just wonder if I have any food. A worthy purpose, IMO. I will challenge everyone with a fear of bees to, just once, ignore them when you encounter them in nature. They do not sting willy-nilly. In fact, and I have tested this repeatedly, they will buzz up to you, possibly land, walk around a little bit, find no nectar, and will bugger off. They only sting when threatened, so swatting and squishing... they don't like that very much.

Now, as for wasps and spiders... I'm still working on it. I try to let wasps alone, except for the hornets on my balcony. Spiders... I kill them on sight, if they are in my home (a bad experience with a Fiddleback, aka Brown Recluse). If they are outside, then I am generous and allow them to continue their existence. When it comes to bees, though, I never, never, never, (did I mention never?) kill them. They are simply one of the most awesome animals on the planet.
