"If you try to please everybody, you often times end up pleasing nobody, especially yourself. When somebody offers to do a favor for free, like making a mod for SimCity 4, you shouldn't be overly critical of something generously given to you. In other words, you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth." - Twilight Sparkle after playing SimCity

"Being a mayor or a content creator for SimCity 4 is a heavy responsibility, Patrick. Each city and each custom content is like a child, and must be treated as such." - SpongeBob Squarepants after playing SimCity

"Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible." - Frank Zappa

"The wisest men follow their own direction." - Euripides

My first attempt to break the grid built on NAM 31.1...  It could be broken up a bit more now with NAM 31.2s flexibility with FRAQ roads but just haven't gotten around to updating yet....

Actually, most of that still looks like a grid to me, what with all the diagonal roads branching off symmetrically.

I use diagonal avenues a lot but have yet to fully experiment with curved puzzle pieces. My city Atenaran and my present region Atomia is likely to remain my region in focus for some time however and I may well have something worthwhile to upload by the by

I did say it was my FIRST time attempting to break form the norm, so a little credit.. haha

Indeed it's still a bit 'griddish'. But as you can see the main road, which was once just a simple paved road running through the city, and the rail line are anti grid. So in the process of trying to "break up the grid" but still retain a bit of realism with the neighborhoods, without having the usual square/rectangle blocks, in my attempt at trying something a bit unorthodox.

Now the cities that still have much I-A will have more curved roads, but I've already posted a pic of my farms in another thread. Trying to keep the images fresh.

It's usual here in the US to have curvy old roads, but most of the new infrastructure is pretty much symmetrically built.

MandelSoft, these are some truly stunning anti-grid pictures! :O

In the following picture I was experimenting with triangular and other off-grid grids. It's kind of a proof of concept, thus there is only roadwork.

The glitched graphic with the absent textures stems from a GPU crash and recover while the tile was active and isn't photoshopped in any way.

Is this gridy? (The cliff part, I mean...) :)

This looks awesome. I really like how you've kind of built into the cliff-side on the right hand side of the image, yet kept the roads at realistic gradients. Nice work! I wouldn't mind seeing some higher-res images of this :)

Spoderman, pls.

I like how you got all the grass textures to match and blend seamlessly, I'd be both very interested and grateful to learn how you accomplished that! That's some really good work...

To be honest, that would be luck or something uncouscious. I never noticed that myself, but as I look to it now the trees and the shadows of both the houses and the trees hide a lot of the transitions between the different textures.

Thanks. Sure, I could do that, and I can also make a scrshot from a different angle. Even though this is just temporary ad it has to be completed... ;)

from my journal (don't look at it, its terrible)

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

How could you not, something about it is hypnotizing. Not a big fan of the default Maxis commercial buildings on the right hand side, but that's just me, the bat junkie. Other than that, nice job.

Here's a better representation of 'breaking the grid' than my last posting. Egged on by Lost Realist & inspired by MandelSoft  ;)

Thinking about creating a lake park in the center and continuing on with this type of network all the way around the coast line.

Thanks.

I hate them too, the journal was before I had tons of downloaded content of office BAT's.

I can do better. I love breaking the grid :D

Love you work infamousjbe :D

This is Watertown, a prosperous hamlet centrally located on my region's coastal highway. Its built form is indicative of organic development and is fairly typical of the small communities that house the majority of the region's residents. Click the screenshot to see it in its original 1080p!

I've shared this pic before, but I'm posting it again for this thread at the suggestion of a comment in my new CJ. Hope nobody minds!

Trust me, no one is going to mind one bit. It's a beautiful image, that's why I suggested you post it here.  :thumb:
