Yeah somehow I skipped QUEBEC CITIES so here is the new list:

Your choices are:

(west to east)

Provincial Cities:

Vancouver

Whistler

Kelowna

Kamloops

Banff

Calgaryquote>

I'm just curious - what criteria are you basing the list on?

I humbly recommend: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_100_largest_metropolitan_areas_in_Canada , http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/List-of-the-100-largest-metropolitan-areas-in-Canada , and http://www.world-gazetteer.com/wg.php?x=1171770696&men=gcis&lng=en&des=gamelan&dat=200&geo=-45&srt=pnan&col=aohdqcfbeimg&geo=-45

And I'll repost my earlier request: please add Victoria to the list.  In addition to being the Provincial Capital, and the 14th largest urban area in Canada, it is a major tourist destination.

I've never been to Canada, but Vancouver is among the top three cities in the world I hope to one day visit (the other two being Sydney and Hong Kong), so I guess that would be my favorite city in Canada. And Toronto would be second, because one of my friends has actually lived there and said it was one of his favorite places.

I actually thought Vancouver was more the LA of Canada, where as Surrey was like the Malibu of Canada!?!?! Yeah it's pretty obvious that Ottawa is connected to Washington, due to there being of capital cities, and I kind of thought Toronto was more like the NY of Canada, not the Chicago, Winnipeg yeah I'd beliebe that. About Calgary and Edmonton, yeah I kinda thought that about them even before people started talking about it being like that, but hey, I guess that's what ya get when you live in Edmonton. But I think Edmonton is more like a dead beat version of Houston, currently, many projects like the ICON, and Station Lands are coming up that will make it look like a modern Houston, yay!! So which city do you prefer, I won't say, cuz I started this post, but well, I may sometime later I dunno!?!?!!?!?!??!?!!??!!!?

    Sketchley:

Victoria is now on da list, I was there this summer, nice but not a whole wack of a lot to do!?

    masochist:

Believe me, Vancouver is superb, I was there this past summer, humid, glamourous, fabulous, fun, exciting, attractive and full of things to do, especially in downtown Vancouver, man I walked like 43 blocks in one whole day!! hahaa haha It's still pretty neat lol lol!!

I thought what Urbanism said was funny but also a bit offensive to my country, Canada. My faves are as follows: Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto.

Edmonton is way to industrial, its a nice looking city and all but i dont like it.

    My fav's are:

Regina sask(Best candian music scene i believe..and best parks)

Yellowknife, best biking paths. And a pretty neat and unique city overal

Jasper, unlike banff, its not terribly busy, and its close to marmot.

My favorite city in the world is Toronto. Yeah, I'm Canadian, so I'm biased, but it has a bit of everything. A big city, not too many low-density cookie-cutter suburbs (gah I hate those monsters), multicultural environment, and it's safe (yeah, that's been a bit tarnished recently, what with suicide bombers at a Timmies on Younge St and shootings at Eaton centre, etc 3.gif, but it's still much safer than any US city of comparable size). Only problem is that public transit is a joke (since I hate driving >_<) and the Gardiner suffocates the mind when you're downtown.

I like Vancouver too, and much of what Toronto has Vancouver has too, but I think BC in general is too laid-back for a young person. Thank god I'm only applying for UoT and Waterloo for university.

I consider myself fortunate in that I've traveled through a lot of this country. The Territories, Alberta, and Saskatchewan are the only regions I haven't been to yet, so needless to say my next vacation will be a somewhat easy choice. No offence intended to the others, but Alberta seems like a wise place to visit next based on available "touristy" things to see and do. My GF gets the shakes when I bring up a day trip to the West Edmonton Mall, and I personally can't wait to see Lake Louise, Banff, and the Badlands. Calgary and Edmonton will obviously be a big part of the vacation and I'm sure they are both truly amazing places to experience.

That said, I've seen many places... and although they all have their own unique charms, I'd say Vancouver is the most amazing place I've ever been to date. Visually nothing compares to it. And you can't easily become bored, since I was there for eight days and still hadn't covered a third of my to-do list. Like Toronto, it's a very multicultural place and as such has wonderful dining and entertainment. The native history of the area is still intertwined in the urban city and the people that live there are very much at one with their natural environment. It is fascinating that for a city of its size Vancouver still has very little freeway coverage, but that plays a major role in keeping it a well-knit community as much as a great international metropolis.

My top five would be rounded out with Victoria (incl. Butchart Gardens), Halifax (pubs, scenery & atmosphere, and history--my mom landed at Pier 21), Quebec City (Lower Quebec, Montmorency Falls), and St. John's, NL (Signal Hill, Cape Spear, harbour & downtown).

Honourable mention to Ottawa (not as centred in politics as you might think); Kelowna and the Okanagan Valley (best wineries in the world); Niagara Falls (although I'm disappointed the city doesn't seem to beautify anything besides the obvious Falls tourism area... avoid downtown); London, ON (a great "tweener" city on the verge of growing into a metropolis w/ all the amenities but maintaining small town charm and green space); and Montreal (night life is second-to-none).

I left Toronto off the list because really, it's just a city.  Sure, there's a lot to do when you're there, but it's such a self-absorbed place and you can almost feel the desperation of wanting to be up there with the best. Toronto has an inferiority complex that sort of sucks the fun out of being there... and clean?!? I think not. Maybe you don't see the same freeway offramps that I do. *shrug*

Surrey and Burnaby are part of Vancouver's metropolitan area, so I'd agree with you there. However, Vaughan (and Mississauga, which is also on the list) are not part of Toronto's metro area. Sometimes they're considered part of the GTA because they fit into the contiguous population and largely form 'bedroom communities', but they're distinctly seperate cities nonetheless. In that sense, you could make a case for Vaughan as a desirable place to visit based on Wonderland being there.

Jr America, perhaps, but without the extremes. Canadian cities, unlike their American counterparts, weren't hollowed out by racial strife and urban renewal. Downtown, with the possible exception of Winnipeg, not only survived but thrived. This has meant that since the 1960s Canadian and American urban experience split sharply and this splith as continued to have ramifications to this day.

Oh and urbandog, if you're looking to describe Vancouver in terms of American cities it's not LA you should be looking to it's Seattle!

Winnipeg is probably the fastest growing city in Canada, by 2010 will hit a million people..With the new manitoba Hydro building the city scape will be much nicer to look at.....i say Winnipeg because of it's commitiment to the arts.

I live near Montreal. It's about 2 hours away but it's as close to France as you can get in the US. I love Montreal.

Vancouver! The metro area is somewhat compact, you don't need a car to get around, awesome natural scenery, and an excellent nightlife! I miss it a lot, and need to get back into the habit of going up there every year again...

Having spent the last week in Victoria and Vancouver, I have the following addition:

My opinion of Vancouver has dropped considerably. It's far too spread out, and the roads and public transportation is both too congested and infrequent.

Victoria, on the other hand, has gone up. Everything is within 15 to 25 minutes drive of everything else. There may not be ski hills within city limits, however there are a plethora of mountains, waterways, parks, and sea front property. Not to mention, lakes within city limits.

I tend to not like small cities, but in the face of the commute times in Vancouver, Victoria allows for a lot more things to be done in a day.
