Very odd to compare the city's. They are too different from each other. But i think i would choose Dubia. Because of its great prosperity and the set up of the city.

It doesn't take a 3-unit college economic course to see that the unheard of attempts by Dubai to try and make itself a middle-east economic powerhouse is flawed. I personally feel that the Sheik should be using his resources from both his royal inheritance and profits from oil to fight poverty and support of international terrorism.

Shanghai without a doubt. The Burj Dubai looks like it belongs in the Wizard of Oz too much to be taken seriously. In ten or twenty years, though, who knows.

I remember reading somewhere that from above Shanghai, the city it looks like a dragon swallowing an orb. As for its demand, 400 million Chinese by 2050 are expected to migrate to the city lifestyle, the greatest urbanization of citizens since the European Colonization of America, and the Gold Rush of the 1800's.

Shanghai all of the way. Both cities have amzing examples of urban architecture and design along buildings by some of todays top firms. Dubai, definatally shows more progress hieght wise: 20 years ago the city looked liked a sand box with a couple of blocks, and now, the sand is still prevalent, but towers like Burj Dubai wich could reach 3000 feet, Al Burj which could be over 3000 feet, and the beautiful Burj Al Arab dominate the skyline and coastline. Not to discount the Shanghai World Financial Center or Jin Mao tower, but Shanghai just doesn't match up. Of course many of its buildings have been progressive in areas other than hieght and machoism. The problem is that Dubai has thrived through being an oil empire and pirating capital of the modern world, and the vast majority of its buildings are ussless luxuries that defeat the pourpose of the skyscraper. The city has tons of free habitable land, yet continues to create these building so that little Donal Trumps from all over the world can wake up to see the jet strem outside of their window. It is an odd and interesting sight to see such masssive city sitting, seemingly undisturbed, in the middle of nowhere, but it resembles less and less of a desert oasis every year. /...end rant.../ So yes, I vote Shanghai 4.gif

Dubai, because it is inspirational, it has a great leader with great ideas

it is luxury, its a ne wplace in the world undiscovered till now. It used to be small rise buildings now we are getting awesome megastrucutres which appear to have no height limit. Shangai's to big, to dense.

Whereas Dubai is a place of refuge from a bustling world

Dubai looks really cool... I like how it looks... Shanghai, is also awesome and will Shanghai Financial Center the worlds tallest building when it is completed..

I have to vote both.. and Shanghai looks like it has hundreds more high rise buildings then new york..

Unfortunately, I will go with Dubai (for medical reasons). As much as I want to go to places like Hong Kong and Shanghai, I can't because the air is so polluted there and I have asthma. Besides, the way Dubai is developing, it's making our planet look like one of those sci-fi planets. I think their approach is a bit off though. I guess looking at this now, that I don't really have a side here. Leonardo

It's a close race in my opinion. I would go with Dubai, it's not as large (population wise and size wise) but it's more captivating in my opinion.

It's not all done yet but when it is this city will be rivaled by none.

Palm_Island_Overview.PNG

The one palm island (Deira) will cover an area greater than Paris

But i have to agree the Burj Dubai is going to look rather crazy when complete...

If it was in other major cities:

burj-dubai-in-new-york.jpg

Tskyline.jpg

Seems to dwarf everything, and by the assumptions of size a full 300m taller then the Shanghai financial center. Little to crazy.

This city is just going to be to amazing, Dubailand.... worlds 1st and 2nd biggest malls, biggest airports, 1st and 2nd tallest building, biggest man made islands. Its a monster city in the making.

I hope the img tag is how you post picture on here lol.

There was one shot from the movie that I wanted to put here instead but I couldn't find it. Oh well, this will have to do.

If the leader of Dubai gets a place at the top of Burj Dubai then both towers will be home to leaders who subjugate their people

Sauron was evil, not stupid. (Combined with Saruman, he created a 100,000 orc army)

The Sheik is only acting dumb like Bush.

Yah? The pollution in the middle of these big cities isn't really all that much as you would think, it's mostly in the industrial sectors. (The pollution haze that you see in the sky just kinda stays in the sky and doesn’t come to street level), and what is in the cities is not that bad! You're asthma would have to be pretty sever to be affected in Hongkong at least although I'm not sure about Bejing.

Definately Shanghai, how can possibly even start to compare the cities, Dubai is one of the most hidden human rights atrocities on Earth, with hundreds of thousands of workers living in sewage-filled shanty towns waiting for paychecks that never arrive. Unless one is a millionaire Dubai is quite horrible. It doesn't even have mass-transit besides afew buses, so to compare Dubai to a proper world-class metropolitan city like Shanghai is completely obsurd

only been to dubai... i liked it because it didn't feel TOO crowded like some major cities around the world. Shanghai definitely needs to be checked out by me... the pics are AWESOME. I do agree with some of you on the fact that the sheik should get his head chopped off. but at least he isn't wasting his money on WAR. you know the money America spent on the WAR, we could have clothed and fed everyone in the world 5x!!!

anyways... I love the buildings in dubai!

well, Shanghai is also rather young city. An infant in Chinese terms - it became of any significant and prominence only about a 100 years ago. In a sense it is younger then say New York, or even San Francisco... I mean if we speak of Shanghai as a city/town, and not and not go to Wu Kingdom period.

But unlike Dubai Shanghai is well established city and it has evolved naturally (unlike Dubai or Shenzen)

BTW here is another view of Pudong cluster. Normally it is photographed from Puxi side of HuanPu river but this shot is made from the opposite direction:

and few pics of "old" Shanghai -late 19th - early 2oth century parts on the puxi side (around the famous Bund)
