New Mississippi

Mississippi, in the Southern United States, stretched over 300 miles from the northern hills to the southern coast on the Gulf of Mexico, and 200 miles from the Mississippi River to the hills and Tombigbee Valley bordering Alabama. Despite its 200 year history, the changes on Earth lead to a new direction for the people of Mississippi, and the rest of the United States of America. The discovery of interstellar space travel through worm holes lead to space probes locating a gigantic, earth-like planet in a solar system a distant 224 light years away from our small home. While considered the first place to truly colonize in the universe, it was at first a passing concept. However, with Global Warming causing the rising of sea level, coastal civilizations began moving inland, and those that could afford it constructive massive space ships to take them to this new planet, Terra Nova, to start their society over again.

In the year 2048, after six major hurricanes in the past 42 years and the rising Gulf had all but destroyed the southern third of the state, Mississippians decided that it was high time to leave for somewhere better. Luckily, since the dawn of the century, the emphasis on education and high tech industry in the state left it in a good place to construct a "mothership" to colonize a patch of territory on Terra Nova.

However, while constructing the mothership took place over several years, larger, wealthier nations colonizied the preferred continent on Terra Nova, the location with the best climate and most accessable resources. So, with a shell of a homeland on earth and no particular destination, they set out for Terra Nova.

Upon arriving in their new planet's orbit, the Terra Nova United Regions met with the leaders of the Mississippians and gave them the choice of land on Segunda Tierra, the second largest landmass on Terra Nova. The T.N.U.R. graciously loaned their shuttle, and the delegates found this piece of land, and quickly filed for it be their new homeland: New Mississippi.

The Japanese Colony graciously donated a ship, the Bella Goth, to the New Mississippians, with which they loaded their best geologist, engineers, construction workers, and raw materials to scout the shoreline of their new territory.

Upon arriving at what they felt would be the right place to start a new city, they began construction on a dock...

To be continued...

I love this. Good to see a Mississippi cj. I was planning on doing a Jackson recreation cj, but a more futuristic, seeing as how Jackson isn't that big or exciting. This sounds very promising. Are you from MS? I live in Ridgeland, and am from Greenville. 4.gif

Can't wait for more updates.

@Everyone That Is Looking Forward to More or is intrigued: Keep looking! I'll be updating very soon, I promise!

@Ded: Thanks, it was the best mothership I could come up with that wasn't from Star Wars or Star Trek. Besides, I felt it should be CGI.

@ccecill: I'm at student at Millsaps in Jackson. I thought about doing Jackson first, but the whole sea level water problem coupled with the Ross Barnett Resevior problem was proving to be difficult, even with the various pond kits it just didn't look right to me. And don't get me started on the highway problems that would arise with The Stack.

That's one of the reasons thatI didn't do Jackson. I live about 3 minutes from the Resivoir but never go there. I'll take a crack at it though. There is a reigon on the STEX called Madison, Mississippi, and I tried to use that, but it is completely off. The resivoir's south end is messed up, and there are mountains in the reigon. And to top it off, It's called Madison, Mississippi. So, I'll try my best to terraform it one day. I'm just so busy with other stuff. BTW, Go Majors!!

    The Technical Stuff

As is customary with City Journals, here was what I'm using to get the game where I play it and share my creation with all of you.

I, like everyone else, use NAM, with some nifty GLR stations and extra track pieces that will make their appearance later in this CJ, as well as the RHW beta. I also have Trolca's Street Mod with Jeronij's Diagonal Mod and Fix for it. Speaking of Jeronij, I also use his Street Side mod as I feel it gets us closer to SC5. Cycledogg's Columbus Terrain Mod and Trees are also used, I'm more than happy to locate my Southern-esque CJ in such a beautiful Pacific Northwest setting. There are many BSC, CSX, and NDEX BATs and lots in use, especially farms and railroad stations. I'm a big fan of railroad stations and throughly enjoy the variety that we now have on the STEX. Northcountrydude's rail yards will also eventually make an appearance. I'm a bit of a rail transportation (heavy, GLR, and elevated), so expect lots of mass transit.

As for game play mechanics, I have the 5x capacity and perfect pathfinding enabled through NAM. I also have Radical Ordinances, and use them when I find it necessary. I also have the Industry Quadrupler, its one that I really like. Most of my cities have balanced budgets, however, those that are build in such a way that its impossible, an ancient Money Tree lot is used to give the city a quick infusion of $10,000,000,000.

If anyone's lot's/BAT's get featured and you'd like credit, please let me know and I'll edit the caption.

    Now on to the update...

    Welcome

    to

    New Mississippi

    nmsflag.jpg

    Welcome to Biloxi

As part of the planning process, the New Mississippi Council decided that the only effective way to get citizens to their new homes was to disembark them in groups of a few hundred at a time, to then take the five day sea journey from the spaceport at Gold Isle to their new land. Nearly 2 millon people fled Mississippi on their mothership, the Magnolia, and the development to support all of them may take years. With no time to waste, the New Mississippi Department of Transportation, New Mississippi Development Authority, and New Mississippi Council all got to work on their foothold in a new land: Biloxi.

    biloxi-2-1.jpg

The overview of the small port of Biloxi a few months after its completion. The cargo ship in the foreground is delivering supplies for the town's next expansion. The central north-south street, running from the dock, is Main Street. The east-west streets are numbering 1st Street, 2nd Street, etc. starting at the port and going north. To the east and west of Main Street are 1st Avenue East and 1st Avenue West, respectively.

    biloxi-2-2.jpg

The old Catholic Diocese of Biloxi was the first religious group to build a house of worship in the new territory, beautiful St. Peter's Church was erected at Main and 5th Streets.

~ Edited by Chocolatemax, please keep all images at or under 800x600, thanks. ~

In preparation for the development of Gulfport, to the west, a light-duty street has been constructed out of Biloxi. The stone bridge was used as many rocks were excavated during construction for the town and the Department of Transportation's engineer decided to use this "free" material, for a beautiful effect.

    biloxi-2-4.jpg

As the town grew, the need for expansion became clear. The City Council, along with NMSDOT and the New Mississippi Development Authority, decided that constructing a bridge across Bayou Biloxi would help future development. While the truss bridge is focal point, you can see that the industrial area near the port has attracted some manufacturing and food service plants, allowing Biloxi to get closer to self-suffiency.

    biloxi-2-5a.jpg

As the town grew, NMDA officals decided that a lumber mill was needed, so a site was selected on the future Inland Highway on the banks of the Biloxi Bayou. At this location, the mill is close enough to the port to easily export any surplus yet is far enough away to keep land values up in the residental areas.

    biloxi-2-5.jpg

Now that the city has a steady supply of building materials, a new hospital, the temporary railroad terminal, and many new houses have grown up on the other side of the Second Street Bridge. The large Biloxi Regional Hospital will serve as the major healthcare center until the rest of the territory is able to construct their own hospitals. As for the railroad terminal, this relatively small station is merely a placeholder according to NMSDOT, they envision a copy of a grand station on earth occupying this spot.

    biloxi-2-6.jpg

It quickly came to the New Mississippi Council's attention that the citizens leaving from Gold Isle often were unable to bring all of their belongings with them and had to endure cramped, dark, and musty quarters on cargo ships. The result was the construction of a passenger ship terminal and the acquistion of a passenger and truck ferry from the Organization of American States. The influx of people that the Terminal brought led to the development of another neighborhood, just south of the hospital along the ocean's shore.

That's all for now, come back soon for another update on the growth of New Mississippi!

Cool idea, and a nice city! Like Zel said, I was expecting something very different but it is very creative and unique.

Well done. I had to remove one of your images because of size restrictions, so if you could try and keep them under 800x600 that would be great.

    Thanks.
