I noticed this about a week ago while looking through some photos of star ferry in Hong Kong for my CJ. Kim plaza from Sim City 3000 is right next to the bank of china. Maxis must have always been basing their buildings on real life ones...pitty they won't be making any more 22.gif

    Cool ilikehotdogsalot!  1.gif

In the SC3K screenshot, the white Art Deco building in the upper left corner is also from Hong Kong.  I think it's an older Bank of China building.

It would be interesting to see this topic in 3 years when we are debating where to find SCS buildings in real life, perhaps we should start looking through our telescopes now so as to find a few of the ones we have seen in screens so far.

Very interesting topic here, kind of sad how maxis couldnt even create most of their own stuff. I kind of wonder if they asked permission for many of these designs.... Some of them are pretty close to being exact replicas and im guessing architectural firms to have intellectual rights to their work. Furthermore it seems to me it would have been easier to simply have created their own buildings, i know when im batting i prefer building my own to copying others.

PS: Dosomthin I love the irony of using live search in a firefox window, that just too funny.

I have said that a billion times in various threads, don't know why this wasn't one of them!

On another note, before 1979, the Azadi, which means freedom (yeah, right.. 14.gif) Tower was known as the Shahyad Tower, which meant "Legacy of the Shahs (Kings)

    I'll play. Lewis LLC...

    lewis02pz8.jpg

Here it is standing 20 stories(80 m)  tall in downtown Saint Paul, MN - my hometown!

In real life this building is known as the Saint Paul City Hall and the Courthouse, which is pretty self-explanatory.  The 20-story city hall was built in 1932 in the American Perpendicular style from Indiana limestone and Wisconsin Rosetta black granite. A three-story base steps back to the central tower accentuated by thin vertical lines of dark windows and connecting spandrels, which give the building a soaring appearance. A series of reliefs by New York sculptor Lee Lawrie highlight the main entrances

    lewis01zy3.jpg

    cityhallrelief.jpg

Immediately above the Fourth Street entrance, a city street scene shows a police officer, a mail carrier, a newspaper boy, a mother and daughter, a blind man, and elderly couple, and a laborer — representing the diversity of urban dwellers. A traffic light, and automobile, and a fire hydrant are included to indicate the benefits of modern technology to the city resident.

The interior, however, remains my favorite part in the building. In contrast to the stark monochromatic exterior, the interior of the Saint Paul City Hall and Ramsey County Courthouse was designed in the more jazzy, ornate Zigzag Moderne, an art deco style derived from a 1925 Paris art exhibition. The art deco theme is used throughout the building, even down to such details as door handles, light fixtures, stair railings, and the lobby mailbox.

    memorialhall.jpg

Memorial Hall,  dedicated to the Ramsey County soldiers who died in 20th Century wars, measures 85 feet by 21 feet and extends upward for three stories. Blue Belgian marble, gold mirror ceiling, and sixteen hollow bronze shafts set in marble columns and lighted from within all serve to highlight the hall's most spectacular feature — the Vision of Peace statue.

Cool Plasticboy!  And thanks for the background too.

Today I scanned some cities looking for maxis buildings in local live, but didn't find any that we didn't already know about.

I found a couple others. "Boutiques", a CS$$$ building, is based off of The Rookery in Chicago.

    dl3boutiquen18zd2.jpg

Then, the St. Ritzy, a CS$$$ hotel, is based off of the Hotel Blenheim in Atlantic City, which was demolished to make way for Bally's Casino.

    Great finds!!

The Rookery is really beautiful in real life, Maxis really killed it.  I almost always demolish that building on sight in the game.

The hotel is a neat building, but Maxis kind of messed that one up too.  Also, it's such a unique building that it doesn't make for a good building for the game.  I demolish those on sight as well.

I agree about the Rookery look-alike.

It's a shame that Maxis didn't include the rest of the Hotel Blenheim...  the "unique" part was only the part that fronted the boardwalk.  The rest of the hotel was more conventional, but just as beautiful.  Both parts together in a BAT would be unreal.  (the complete set of blueprints are available if anyone's interested)

    You fail. 3.gif

It's Chifley Tower, and it's part of the "Chifley Talls Club"... Actually, there's an near exact replica of it on the STEX done by one of the NDEX crew (though it's spelt as Chifly on the STEX).

    I've found some from Chicago.

    1538250639_c49bc27a4a.jpg

Manhattan Building (Chicago, Ill.) in real life, and Goldman Building (???) in SC4.

    1539111096_76980a7bc5.jpg

Old Colony Building (Chicago, Ill.) in real life, that big brown R$ building in SC4.  I'm not 100% sure on this one, I'd need to look at a pic, but I think they're the same.

Both photos by Norman Nithman from Flickr.com (click on the images to go to their pages).
