That's really exciting to hear. Prior to plunderer's release of his rail catenary mod, I was following the development at SC4D hoping that a version using SFBT props would be released as well. Andreas informed me that such a mod had been under development earlier, but - as you said - never left beta state.

Now I'm getting my hopes up again. Hopefully, this new mod (if released) will include T21s for STR as well. Btw: Did the SFBT make catenary models for the STR mod already? The lack of such is one of the major reasons I still don't use STR..

Right at the moment Kenworth is focussing on the standard DTR T21s - which are quite a lot of. He also rerendered the models in HD as you can see here in his thread over at the (German) SimForum.de. Unlike the old mod I am using the new mod eventually shall be draggable but untill then it's still a long way to go.

I think he will do STR, too (if not I will nag him to do so 2.gif 2.gif but at the moment he is really busy with the DTR.

BTW the link will lead you to the page where he first posted about the catenary mod. Go down to the next page and you may find something for the smooth curves ...

Looks great! Come to think about it, I once downloaded his catenaries for the NAM curves and tried them out.

I'm very excited about Kenworth's work. However, sometimes I find it better to manually place the catenaries to get the most realistic look. Catenaries for STR would have been great, though, and I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one hoping these will be made.

Here is the rolling stock of my region's railway throughout the years.

Ah, the "Yellowbellies." They look awesome in-game. I've used them myself, but now I've standardized on Amtrak trains.

I'm still hoping someone makes NJ Transit, NYC Metro North, or Chicago Metra skins.

@Moonraker0: Great night shots! I love your viaduct. Nice train skin as well. And you're right: That's a heavy congested overpass. One could wonder why, though, as it's barely traffic on the other avenue. Faulty traffic lights..? 1.gif

Wow, that IS a crowded overpass. What's going on there, Moonraker?

Here are some of mine:

Commuter rail center.

Further south, the commuter rail passes over industrial district, and freight rail lines.

Passenger rail over freight.

After the line turns west, it parallels, the freight lines.

West parallels freight

Great shots, diamonddog_74! I particulary like the sloped freight rail and the retaining walls. I also spot a piece of FARR, and that's a rare sight in this thread. Hoping for more shots. 19.gif

(Btw, you might want to turn off the grid next time. Just a well-meant tip.) 2.gif

Where can I get a viaduct station like in Moonraker0's pic? I've been looking for one for ages.

Hey thanks, heitomat! I appreciate it coming from you since your rail networks are fantastic. BTW, the commuter rail in the last shot is on a very long slope. Further west, both commuter rail and freight rail are on the same grade as they go into the next city.

I use FARR pieces as much as I can. They can sometimes be frustrating to work with, but they look really nice in the end. I just wish we had underpass and overpass puzzle pieces for it. Perhaps that's being worked on.

I also want to electrify my commuter rail, but I haven't found American-style electric engines. That's why I'm using diesels. I like the double-deck Amtrak cars.

Regarding the grid, I forgot to turn it off. I have it off in my other city tiles. I must've really needed it for something in this one and forgot to turn it off. I'm using the Italia terrain mod (with all 34 tree varieties) and it definitely looks better without grids.

@jim546, the viaduct train stations are here on STEX, I have a few of them myself. The ones that Moonraker is using are the Victorian Rail Viaduct stations. They require that you download the Victorian Style El-Rail stations. Just search for either of them in STEX, and you'll get both in the results. SFBT also has viaduct stations.

@ timmie, very nice looking city. Where did you find a mod to give your train tracks a consistent base texture like that? It looks like your mod is overriding the brown-dirt-when-adjacent-to-lots behavior of the default game. Does your mod also work with wide-angle rails?

@Total Casual: The mod that timmie (Great pictures, by the way!) uses, is PEG's Alternate Rail Set Mod (PLEX link, registration needed. It's free, of course). Be aware that it doesn't work for the wide radius curves that come with the NAM, leaving a somewhat inconsistent look. Also it removes the dirt from the roads next to agriculture and landfill zones.

If you want a uniform look for your rail tracks, including the wide radius curves and the FARR pieces, I suggest you use Swamper/PEG's No Rail Dirt Mod.

@diamonddog_74: Thank you for the kind words. And yes, now I see that the commuter rail is sloped. Even better! Btw, If you're looking for engines, you might want to have a look at bob56's List of Train Skins at SC4D. Maybe you'll find something interesting.

I'm actually looking for new (European) electric locomotives myself. Not because I'm unhappy with the ones I've got, but I read that they are quite old and are taken out of service. A more modern locomotive skin, like the ones we have in Norway, would have been nice. I only want a locomotive, though. Preferrably red, as I still want to use the rail cars from SFBT..

Anyone..?

Thanks!  Yep, I get bad traffic lights all the time.  That pic is about the smallest traffic jam I get; they're usually way bigger.  The thing I like best about the viaduct shot is the way the nightlighting on the train cars and victorian station make it look...sort of old-fashioned; add in the Wisconsin Gas building and City Hall to the left and you'd almost think it's New York 1940 building style, but the city is a Euro-contemporary one.  But your shots are just awesome.   Do you use a certain slope mod to get slopes like in the first picture's highway, or the smooth Terraforming tool?

@Moonraker0: I agree, the nightlighting is great. Unfortunately my rail cars don't have nightlighting - only the locomotive.. That's the only reason I don't have a night shot of my trains so far. You can barely see the trains.. To make slopes, I use jeronij's Tunnel and Slope Mod. For RHW slopes, I build a rail slope, demolish the tracks and finally drag the RHW.

@heitomat, thanks for the link. I'm sure it'll come in handy. I looked pretty much at all of them and they don't have any Amtrak-style electric engines. I really like using the Superliner cars, but so far the only engines that look good with them are those diesels I'm using. Oh well.

Hey, here's a question I have for everyone: Why aren't there ANY sunken passenger rail stations that are compatible with Smoncrie's rail hole digger tool? The tool digs an 8m ditch, but all the sunken rail stations are for 15m ditches. I understand they are built to be compatible with 15m high road overpasses, but then what's the point of the 8m tool?

Am I the only one who thinks 15m (49.2 ft) is too deep for open cut rail or too high for embankments? I ride trains a lot since I currently live in Chicago, and I've lived in the NYC metro area, but I've never been on a 49 ft. high rail embankment.

I've avoided making those really high embankments, by using the 15m riser tool, and then sinking it 8m with the rail hole digger. The resulting embankment is 7m high. After that, if I have a road going under it, I use the 15m hole digger at the intersection, so I can place the rail viaduct pieces across it. It looks like this:

11-userailtocreatesmoothslope.jpg

12-finishthelowernetwork.jpg

13-makeanycosmeticadjustments.jpg

It would be nice to have rail stations for 7m high embankments and 8m deep ditches. Any thoughts on this?
