Ohhhhh! Another one...? 3.gif

I think I'm gonna make a "Dublin Skyscrapers" page!

*glances at list of Dublin's tallest buildings*

Oh... never mind...45.gif

Anyway, I like London's current skyline, but I don't think it really needs much more, we don't want another city where it's only feature is a glitzy skyline... London has a lot more to offer the world than height...4.gif

I personally do not like London's current skyline. When I went to London, I noticed how many different styles of the buildings there are. They basically feature many styles from all around the world from NYC's 30s style to a very modern style. Personally, I think the skyline is unorganized. But from photos I've seen from Mak and Tonks, the new skyline looks very promising and it features an organized style of modernism.

I have never been to London, but what I see is the incredible architecture. Like it or not, it does create discussion and debate. Its intresting how most of the newer buildings use glass and metal in the exterior. I like it, but I am seeing what I am seeing in the photos.

Skyscrapers has always been popular in North America and East Asia. Why hasn't Europeans really embraced skyscrapers as much until now? Is it because people had a fear of heights, or was it because residents were afraid that the modernism of skyscrapers will clash with the more human-scale, 'traditional' look of cities?

London has never really needed many skyscrapers because the city has just built itself out instead of up. With increased fears of countryside loss though, London's future will be based on building more skyscrapers. I would not at this time call London a skyscraper city, though London does have the Swiss Re and Canary Wharf skyscrapers which I have always liked.

London should be sighting a new cluster in Stratford, I think the micro cities that are in the City and Canary Wharf areas are great. If they add too much it will ruin the effect. London will never rival other cities it just wouldn't work although cities like Birmingham or Plymouth could be an alternative.

While Reading The london phillps street atlas ive come across many Tower block names

Trellick tower. Gambier House.norbury court etc but ive also come across many names with point instead of the previous names eg Brasett point and spruce point which appear mainly in east london wandsworth and southwark does the word point really mean tower or house or dewlling or it might mean a road or street. any suggestions Please

Hmmm... How did you miss the tudor buildings and the magnificent 19th century buildings? London isn't a carbon copy of any other city. If anything New York borrows more architectural features than any other city. London is almost two thousand years old, New york is almost 400. You forget that London wasn't particularly well planned because of it's age. Sure it's a mix of old and new, and it's not organised, but it's London and that's how it always has been and how (I hope) it always will be.

[edit] just realised that Micah's comment is from last year. Heh...

I love the Canary Wharf buildings and nice to see London really embrace modern design with the new square mile developments. the building below, I love, it looks fantastic and something very different. Just not sure how it will fit in with London.

Impressive! It's a shame that it's destroyed in 28 Weeks Later (based on the commercials).

Woah! lol, I can hear a crash...anyway, my fav London building is the HSBS or citigroup in Canary Wharf. Docklands is pretty cool too, and surprisingly, 30 St. Marys axe is also funny.

The name ending in point is a Tower Block (ie. skyscraper), the famous one was Ronan Point. There was a gas explosion and one corner collapsed causing it to be pulled down. Most English people don't want to live in Tower Blocks.

Canary Wharf is very new, it wasn't there in the eighties. The area was formerly docks, but as ships got bigger they had to move to nearer the coast and the docks declined.Over the last twenty or so yearsthe area as been redeveloped into a major commercial zone.
