Poland (Polska) is over 1,000 years old and has seen a rich history. In the 16th centaury, Poland was one of the largest, wealthiest, and most powerful countries in Europe. In 1791, Poland adopted the Constitution of May 3rd, Europe's first, and only the second in the world after the United States.

During the 1900s, Poland ceased to exist. It was partioned off by Austria, Russian, and Prussia, then regained independence in the aftermath of the First World War. During the Second World War, it became a communist state of the Solviet Union. In 1989, the Solitary movement concluded.

A new constitution was drafted in 1997, in 1999, Poland was accepted into NATO, and in 2004, it officially it joined the EU.

Today, Poland is one of the fastest growing countries in Europe. Warsaw, the capital, has a metropolitan area of 1.7 million. Skyscrapers are sky-rocketing, the airline industry is one of the fastest growing, and the housing boom is one of the largest in Europe. In fact, real estate is prime in Warsaw. Foreigners are quickly snatching real estate in downtown. Many from Ireland, Britain, and Spain believe investments in Warsaw apartments and condos are smart.

So, is Poland becoming the new and hot "It" European capital. I believe it truly could be. It has a detailed history, great culture, and some wonderful architecture. People just need to see what Poland really has in store. In twenty years, who knows what might happen.

Congrats to my ancestor's country!! Yeah, Poland had a pretty horrible time during the World Wars and during the Cold War. In fact, during the 20s, my great grandparents came to America. (On my mother's side)

I'm not sure if Poland is truly the new "it" country. In fact, I've heard that in the last few years, 100,000 immigrants from Poland have moved to England. I still think Poland has a bad record and it will be hard for Poland to become a place where everyone will go to because of the Cold War which totally transformed that country. I may be wrong, but I don't think it is an 'it' country just yet.

Yes, it could become the new capital.

But not at this moment, but I think in 25 years it will certainly happen.

In my country (The Netherlands), there are lots of Poles. Dutch managers let them work with a low salary. That's awful.

Poles are famous in our country because they work so hard with low costs! That's terrible. Typical Dutch.

But Poland seems to me a nice country. especially cities like Warsaw and Krakow. I thought the biggest TV tower in the world was in Plock?(600 meters high)

Well, we'll see what happens in the next 25 years.

I doubt Poland is the new "it" country, however within 20/25 years I'd guess it'll be a different story. Ever since the country joined the EU a lot of Polish immigrants have moved to Ireland (160,000), the U.K. (100,000) or Sweden (?), the only other EU countries that would let them.

The current economic situation in Poland is similar to Ireland's, or Spain's, in he early 80s. Give it a few years and there'll be some serious changes out there. 4.gif

I don't really understand what you're trying to say, Uumke, are you saying that Poland is going to become the capital of Europe? I never knew there was one... and I can think of other places that are more likely to become that before Poland ever will.

What a coincidence! I've been living there for whole my life! 1.gif Never thought that I might meet a person from M-ce on Simtropolis.

Numbers like 100,000 immigrants from Poland to England are really, really lowered. That are only official statistics. Actually, It's obvious that at least 500,000 Poles moved to England last two years. I personally know about 5? wait, no, 10 people who moved there? Even my brother was there for one year... Mostly young people move to England, because of lack of perspectives in Poland.

What's funny, the government claims that after its election the unemployment has decreased.

Link? Last time I checked Brussels in Belgium was the capital of the EU, what with the parliament and number commissions.

Theres a growing number of Poles moving to where I live (Scottish Borders), plenty of Polish Reg Cars going about. There must be about 200-500 Poles in Berwickshire alone, its one of the least densly populated places in the UK so I agree with the 500,000 comment.

Personally, I don't mind people coming here for better quality of life... but the thing immigrants don't seem to understand is that we always seem to discriminate against them. I know a few Portugese people who get well less than minimum wage... they don't seem to care but I think its seriously not right.

What I am really trying to get at, could Warsaw/Poland become one of those places that so many aspire to visit? Could it be the next Paris, London, or Rome? Not in 10 years, 20, or even 30, but I do believe it will one day it will be on millions of people, "Places To See" list.

I think most people are just too, what is it called when you are assumptious, you believe people are one thing just by looking at them, good heavens it's bugging me.

Yea..Corruption is everywhere...I heard funny question some time ago. Some Irishman asked a Polsh girl, who worked in an irish pub, do we have cars in Poland 3.gif Or coca cola...Hey! People (maybe from Ireland 3.gif ) Poland is not so backward! Poland is much richer than Ukraine or Belarus, but poorer form Germany or England. If visitors from other countries want to visit Poland, i recommend Cracow (beautiful old city, it was on the 5 place of "cities to see" in Europe), Gdansk, or Zakopane (wonderfull mountain city in Tatry)

Warsaw is nice too but It was destroyed while IIWW. There are beautiful Skycrapers (if you want to now more see Warsaw Skycrapers thread) I love my country Poland, no matter what other people would say! 9.gif

    Let's not go there, guys.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

In London I think many Polish people have realised that the grass isn't always greener. Westminster is now paying for plane tickets so they can go home as many are living on the streets and didn;t get jobs they were promised. You get payed more in London but quality of life I don't think is the same. I think Poland is a beautiful country and will have rivalling cities if Britain would stop taking the construction workers needed to build them. Likewise I hear they have good health care as many refuse to use the NHS lol.

Poland Would be much more rich, But since 1793 it was under occupation of Russia, Prussia and Austria. Poland was reborn in 1918. It was ruled by autocratic (in good meaning) general, Joseph Pilsudski. In 1920 Poland was attacked by Soviet Union, wich had much more bigger army. Red Army arrived to Warsaw and there was no hope for freedom for all Europe (Lenin & his guys wanted to "Spread communism for all world") But then happened "Miracle on Vistula. Mighty troops of very young polish army destroyed lots of Red troops. After few weeks (months?) Red Army was back in USSR and world was saved.

In 1920's Poland was fast developing country. There was builded port in Gdynia and polish universities were factories producing geniuses.

After building of country basics, Pilsudski resigned from his authorities, but after unlucky tryings of democracy, He returned with his loyal armies. He put much of ultranational opposition behind the bars. After that all he ruled for a little tima and again resigned from authorities. Now Poland was 100% democratic country.

In 1939 IIWW was started ( i won't tell this part of polish history, because it is too big) but I can tell that in 1941 NKWD (Soviet gestapo) murdered about 20 000 polish most elite officers

In 1945, Poland was taken by Stalin. lots of polish elites was killed by SB & UB. About 40 yrs of stalinism and communism, destroyed polish economy, society, and elites. Urbanistics and city planning too

it's more like 1,000,000 although a lot of Poles are realising that Great Britain is a ****hole and although the money seems bigger, prices more than match the pay

and if they came to Britain for the "culture" then they can just pop down for Polish bread, beer and magazines in your nearest newsagent

Congrats to Poland for begining this rebirth. I was not aware that as a nation, it was so new (constitution was made in 97'). Good to see one of the worlds most tortured countries during the 20th century has managed to rise up like this. In fact, just today, a large boston company whose name escapes me, but was probably Gillette, opened up some stuff in Krakow.

I have always considered Poland-Germany border as the border between western and eastern europe, and well, eastern europe, to be frank, has always scared me. The Eurotrip scene in eastern europe pretty much sums it up. Im glad that i am starting to think of Poland in a better light that I did before, and lets hope it prospers!
