Id say London, Washington DC would have a chance, if it wasent for that dumb, "no buildings taller than the washington monument rule". there both are home to oppressive tyrannical governments, but there nice cities.

I don't recognise Greece yet. Please add into it:

Greece (known to Constantina as three independent countries):

Athens - Athens City

Ionia - Ionnina

Thrace - Salonica

London and Athens are jointly the best

London, its simply the most fantastic city in the world! *Hides british pasport 3.gif* Being serious, its still got to be London, its just so diverse. Each street has a complete different feel to it, you could literally spend your entire life living in London and still discover something new and spectacular everyday. In my opinion that is what makes London the best Capital City.

My top 5 are listed in the final paragraph of this post, I just wanted to get a reply in.

Ottawa, ON had a similar bylaw with the Peace Tower (92 m). The idea was that the most important building in the city should dominate the skyline, but as the CBD of Ottawa grew the bylaw was removed because there were local concerns that it would contribute either to urban sprawl (needing to build outward instead of upward) or a movement of businesses from downtown to the 'burbs, or both.

Today the bylaw no longer exists, but there are still restrictions on new buildings that partially apply to height which the city strictly enforces. It concerns sunlight hitting various streets at certain times of the day. The Royal Bank building is a product of this weird form of control and consequently has a hole through the middle of it (literally) to allow light to hit the very street it stands on. http://www.worldofstock.com/slides/ANB1527.jpg

Technically, Terrasses de la Chaudière in Hull, QC is the tallest building in the metropolitan Ottawa area (124 m) whereas Place de Ville-C is the tallest building in the city of Ottawa (112 m).

Don't knock Washington's "rule", since it helps keep the city look unique and recognizable... many, many capital cities have adopted the rule at one point or another.

As for the point of this thread (LOL) I love Ottawa, although since I'm a Canuck that's to be expected. I don't live there, but I try to go every year to watch the Dominion Day fireworks and take in the sights. However, I rank it 2nd to London... that's your world capital right there. Truly great capital cities need to embrace history, politics, and entertainment, so Paris, Rome, and Tokyo round-out my top five. Fun thread, wmthor!

I can't say I've been to any other capitol then Washington DC...but based on what I know I'd have to go with Berlin, not only does it have many beautiful landmarks but it's full of interesting history.

I go with my capital, Brasilia, the planned city built on the 60s. But not because of the corruption politicians... it's for the buildings, it's architecture, it's landmarks, it's richness (comparing to Brazil) and it's green areas (it has the most green area per capita in the whole world).

I'll go with amsterdam.

The canal system is a very special landmark, and amsterdam is special too, because the city center is one of the best saved downtowns in the world. A big disadvantage: the city center is built on piles, so the buildings are sometimes crooked.

There are also some typical dutch skycrapers and the tramways complete the city.

You can also find some odd architecture, nice museums and more.

I don't like it when you ask people about amsterdam and they say: coffeeshops and legal prostitution. Amsterdam isn't only coffeeshops, and that makes me angry when people say that.

But anyways, I'll go with Amsterdam,

Paris 2nd and London 3rd

Paris, France. Haussman was a genius.

Washington, DC comes close, but it's overly postmodern - a facsimile of Paris.

Beijing - which means "North Capital"

Washington D.C. - because of the history of how it was planned and how it was designed for the sole purpose of being the center of the US government.

If state capitals count, Saint Paul, MN totally wins hands down.

Disclaimer: I live there.

Canberra, Australia. Even though I've never been there, I just love the city's design.

Simfox, Haag is the seat of the Royals & Judicial Capital, Amsterdam is the administrative Capital. Similar to what South Africa had, with Cape Town, Pretoria & Johannesburg all capitals.
