I opened my Sim City 4 folder to put in some plug ins, and noticed a file, alone, not in a subfolder, titled SimCity 4(dot)cfg. Was created last week and is 322 bytes and a cfg file. (info obtained from hovering cursor) Can anyone tell me what this might be? It's not something I manually put in there. This is the first time I've ever noticed a file sitting all by itself. Thanks.

Well, after a cursory look, I don't have that file.  What's in it?  Can you open it with either notepad or your browser?

Have you recently installed the updates from the official site or downloaded any of the programs avalable from ST? I noticed I had the same file after doing one or the other. It has been a while and I don't remember which. I also had a .cfg file show up after installing the Startup Manager, but that one has the name included in the file name. So it could be from a program such as SC4Tool or Landscape Designer or something.

The Config file you found contains information related the game settings, which region you last viewed, and some information about other parts of SC4. If you delete it, you will have to reset your settings and re-do the UDI Training missions you have done.

I had to delete it once due to some nasty corruption problems I had. After I removed it, the problems went away.

Well, I can't open it with notepad or a browser or anything else I can think of. (Says opens with "unknown application") I've downloaded some BATs, but no mods, updates, etc. Funny thing is, I haven't even played much in the past couple weeks due to hectic RL schedule. I don't do the UDI missions and only have one region. Unknown files like this bother me...kinda like a 'damned if I do, damned if I don't' situation. I'm afraid to take it out for fear of messing up the game, but I'm afraid to leave it IN for fear of messing up the game. Strange the way it just appeared, seemingly out of nowhere. I open that folder often to add BATs to the plug-in folder and it was never there before. (6/18/06, I'm ASSuming from the date)

OK, there are a couple of things you can do:

    1. Find a general reader such as Textpad and open it there.  Even if it is binary, you should be able to figure out something.
    2. Move it to your desktop and see if game play is affected by its absence.  If nothing shows up after a couple of weeks, stick it in a quarantine folder.  After six months you can probably delete it.

i've got the same CFG file in the MyDocs SC4 folder. it's always been there, and i've noticed that SC4 creates a new one if it's missing. no clue as to what it does, just leave it there.

SC4's ini is where it keeps its configuration. it is perfectly normal.. not to worry.. it can even be edited in certain cercumstances to change things that are asked at install and never asked again.. normally just ignor it and let it do its job.. I expect if you delete it SC4 wil ask questions at startup but I've never tried it..

Found it in my system when I looked at the right directory.  It is actually a DBPF file, which is the database that is used in SC4.  I suspect if you kill it, it will turn up again.
