Australian Architecture

There is a distinct lack of Aussie architecture on the site, despite the Opera House being a fantastic representation. I also found an AMP Tower (Centrepoint, Sydney) on the SC4 Exchange, but not on Simtropolis. I'd love a team to start up dedicated to replicating Australian architecture for the game to give a specific Australian feel, particularly in terms of landmarks, stations and so on. In particular, a version of Sydney Central Station, with it's 18 or so platforms plus two underground would be a particular bonus for my regions. I'm also interested in creating Wollongong Light House for Sim City, particularly for my Illawarra Region, and would appreciate any help on use of the BAT... I am a complete beginner with only snippets of time to work with it, so ANY input would be appreciated!

Thanks all!

Sounds like you mean a distinct lack of NSW Architecture (for those not familiar with Australia, NSW is the state you have to drive through to get from sunny Queensland and cultural centre of Australia Victoria44.gif).

Anyway, there is a fair bit of stuff on the STEX with a bit of Aussie character, you just have to look for it. I've created a few redbrick shops, some modern concrete brand stores (like Repco, JB etc.) and the old Herald Sun building in Melbourne. Lakeyboy has created some signage. Thesdale is busily recreating every home Metricon, Jennings etc. have created in the last few years and did a Bunnings, two Footy ovals (proper footy) and a Cricket oval. And mattb325 has created some beautiful Sydney terraces. There may be others (Jen_p is an Aussie and was working on some Surburban houses, but I don't think they were ever released).

Central has 23 above ground platforms and four below ground (though admittedly two aren't yet in use). There's a bit of a story to the extra platforms actually. They had to dig 24/25 so deep that they figured they might as well slap a couple of extra ones in for good measure.

I'll voice my view that we need a bit more Aussie content. Particularly railway stations. I'd personally like to see the sort of station that's common down in the Illawarra (I was going to do a Wollongong region myself (I made the Wollongong map btw). If I could make new models for automata I'd be adding new trains like there's no tomorrow, also (can you tell I'm a gunzel yet? 3.gif). They're ridiculously common in inner Sydney and I reckon they'd look great in-game. I actually posted a pic of the general style in the BAT request thread a while ago just in case anybody's game.

Deadwoods, you don't know how much I love those shops. I'd love a mod that kills some of the Maxis shops and replaces them with yours (ti'd be nice if it were easier to recreate those massively long chains of shops you find around Sydney (around Newtown there's a continuous stretch of them for about 2km with the odd church thrown in. I kid you not)

I know this is kindof offtopic, but I'd love to see more sandstone-y buildings.

Yeah, exactly, it was a discussion thread on Australian Architecture, I actually posted my official request in the BAT thread, thank you very much. Re-read my original posting, please, guys, as it distinctly states what I was trying to do, and have successfully created a dialogue with other users, which has been a terrific response (thanks guys! I will look at some of the content you suggested is already out there too...)

Oh, and Deadwoods: I mean any major Australian architecture, we have some great modern buildings in Sydney, Brisbane, the Gold Coast that would look awesome in any Sim City... Sorry if it seems I only talked about NSW architecture, but it is my homeland 2.gif I am intent on recreating the Illawarra region in particular, and hand-made a region back when I had a lot of free time. Sorry for double-posting in my own thread...

Hmm this thread seems to have died since it got shifted further and further away from the main area... But I thought I'd revive it a little by asking if anyone has seen the Emporis site? It lists all highrises (to an extent) around the world, and would be an excellent resource of ideas etc, if only Sim City Developers would look at it.. I'd love to see Australian Architecture as a separate entity like the other possibilities in the game, and feel that a height restriction capacity should be integral in Sim City 5! I can't believe how many buildings build up around the smaller monuments despite going for a lower density, and not wanting the low density Depiesse's Diner Jungle. Anyway, hope it's fuel for thought for somebody, as heaven knows there seems to be little support for Down Under content from the main players of this site...

yeah I'd be designing like crazy if only I could get an 'Idiots' Guide to GMax' as most tutorials expect too much prior knowledge... I'll check that site out too, though! Thanks for the link!

OK, still hanging out for some assistance on the BAT front. Just a reminder to those providing tutorials: We need to be able to start from scratch, no prior knowledge, and we need to be able to ask questions. I can't believe the rudeness from some people in the chat room when I wanted to ask a question which I couldn't find an answer to, it was as if I was the stupidest person out, and I should have been there earlier when someone else asked. I mean, come on people, we are all here for the same thing. A bit of respect for each other wouldn't go astray.

LOL OK OK enough with the footie arguments 2.gif Both fields are available, and I have given my Heavana residents a choice in sporting venues and codes. Thanks for the heads up Garry Colligan, but I have already seen those guys' great work, and they are included in my region. I'd like to see some of the typical Aussie structures build higher, as my residential now has distinct aussie flavours, complete with some shops, but Heavana's skyline is composed purely of Americana Monuments. Sydney has some fantastic highrises, and I want some of those in my city. As I said earlier in the thread, the Deautsch Bank Building is done to perfection, and I thank them for that! More Sydney architecture needs to come, as well as Gold Coast, and Brisbane and Melbourne... We have some incredibly ingenious and visually appealing skyscrapers, let's show the world what we've got!

Perth has many wonderful buildings also, but this isn't really a wishlist so I don't want to encourage those sorts of messages, matt_sbs, but I do agree that we should have representation from around Australia. I want to begin a group dedicated to immortalising our great architecture in Sim City 4, but I have failed attempts at understanding gmax. I see that there is a lot of desire out there for our architecture and Aussie flair, so why not get a group of people working on it? Let's create an Aussie Dream Team, like the BSC etc, to ensure we are well-represented, and our cities can have a fuller down-under feel? So far, my low-res, some shops, the Sydney Opera House, the Deutsch Bank Building, and a shocking AMP Tower are all I have to shhowcase in my cities. Why stop at architecture too? Could we design an Uluru? Or the Olgas? Or even a Great Barrier Reef (in square blocks)???

Things have gone a bit quiet on the Aussie front from me, although as someone suggested my Highway Walls were based on ones I see in my everyday travels, like down the side of the Eastern Freeway in Melb. I know Matt has just put out a great looking school that could be from any large town in Oz (I suggested a red brick version which would be like every Mick (Catholic) primary school in Oz (like St Micheals and Johns in Horsham that I "enjoyed" for so many years).

Loved the school, though dependancies get me down, especially when they overtake my basic content in sc4: my parks and plazas no longer look interesting.. Other than that, love the Aussie windmill you made, deadwoods! I have a bit of your stuff in my sim cities and you have made a difference (despite my obvious omission of your name in my last msg... not intentional I swear!)

Thanks to everyone making an effort for Aussie representation on the STEX, we all appreciate it guys! Keep up the great work!

Well, finally I have been able to get my hands on the tutorials for GMax - you know, the basic ones everyone always assumed you'd done? So now all I need is time, patience and creativity to get started... By the time I get there, SC5 will be out no doubt... Hopefully with an AUSTRALIAN ARCHITECTURE inclusion 2.gif
