Euston, the worlds first capital city terminus, an amazing structure and credit to the victorian age, a masterpeice loved by all.

Untill 1962 of course, Euston Station went from this:

I say they should create a modern version of the Euston arch out of glass and stuff. Of course most people are plebs and would hate it but thats what they said about the Gherkin and London Eye.

Demolition of everything built before was seen as progress and not the massacre that it turned out to be. My own home city, Halifax Canada, survived the worst of it and lost only a few buildings. Most was saved. From my understanding, the US saw the worst of it.

It was probably cheaper to just build a completely new one instead of "resturating" the old one. But I can agree with you that the new building does sucks, why can't building be designed? That ones looks like they have taken a solid concrete block and cut out windows.

Tonks didn't show the interior of the Great Hall opened in 1849 at Euston Station. This was truly a masterpiece of Victorian grandeur and reflected the railway age perfectly.  I was privileged to have seen it and the Doric Arch before the vandalism and cannot understand how British Rail was allowed to destroy such a historically important building.

It is sad but at times we should consider ourselves lucky, the same thing nearly happened to St. Pancras.

    Yes, i was discussing this with one of my graphics lecturers, i cant imagine London without the Pancras.

    yeah, you think thats bad. In the USA we had beautiful train stations in all the major cities. Then after WW2 the car killed profitible rail service for the mega railroad corporations...

    Here is the houston train station.EDIT: f***king site not allowing hotlinking... Even though it is a huge city with the 7th largest metro population in the country and the 4th largest city population(right after chi-town baby), all it has is a fugly little depressing depot that only gets a few trains a week, most of them a good 2 hours late...

    Also, In lots of small towns they tore down perfectly good depots and built nasty little things called 'amshacks' that are just glorified bus depots

    in fairness to the modernist Euston station, it is at least moderately pleasant inside. Birmingham New Street on the other hand...

    I don't object to the 60s replacement much at all.  I like the brutalist architecture, the arrogance and boldness of the scheme and oppressive concrete ceiling - not to mention the wacky - but perilious and impractical -ramp down to some of the platforms!  We do actually function fine without another historic rail station.

    Actually, the new Euston is a worse station economically, and the enclosed train shed is bad for air circulation compared to the original. It also lacks any charachter compared to its neighbours, St Pancras and Kings Cross and is a general scar to the Euston Road Area.

    if you say so, I'd have no idea, ive never been there.

    perhaps it can accomodate more trains though? the first picture you showed only has 2 tracks

    if its still 2 tracks, then I wouldn't be able to tell you why they would have done it.

    I'm not one that is in favor of holding onto many landmarks from the past, but the thing that got me was not the station that was replaced, but that Winnipeg City Hall that got replaced. What an ugly "upgrade"!

    ummmm from what I remember the original winnipeg city hall didn't so much get replaced... it burned down. While the new city hall isn't really that pretty is is part of an architectureal set,; city hall, the concert hall and the museum of man and nature that all face each other across the strip of main street that they are located on. They are all the same style and fit together with a sort of concreate charm.
