  1. Small City Going Big

Today's update: No update. Spent the entire night playing the piano. When I get that musical inclination... Anyway that's for another subforum. I'll probably get back on tomorrow or the day after. So, yeah. Ciao
  2. Small City Going Big

Another day of development has brought my region to new heights. I decided to step back from Apex and take the time to alleviate some of the demand it had created by zoning up some of the surrounding cities... And boy did it grow. Big City gets bigger. The demand from Apex was able to generate 7 new residential/commercial cities. The ones on medium tiles averaged around 300.000 in population with 150.000 commercial jobs while the ones on small tiles tended to stay at a modest 50.000 people. Regardless, this new growth doubled the population of the region and gave it a very nice look. The city of Ighodaro These peripheral cities tended to be majority (more than 50%) medium wealth citizenry and high wealth commercial office. All of them contain a university and thus have extremely high quality educational facilities. One of the larger ones, Zanther, was even able to get a large municipal airport to complement it's above average commercial development. White Grotto, a technological marvel. The high-tech industry demand from all this is off the charts. I have six cities zoned entirely for high-tech industry. Each is capable of supporting several waste management plants (I counteract their pollution with several parks surrounding them on all sides - those techies love parks). This keeps my residential cities clean and carefree. My next city is decidedly going to be a high tech one. I am debating on whether or not to throw in some residential development to see if I can get a Space Port built. Who knows? Regardless, it was a good day for my city.

So, here we are 26 hours later, and I've got something I think you'll like. I've managed to cram a ton of people into a single large tile with plenty of room left to grow. I give you Apex, the Grand Central City. This magnificent beast has a population that currently sits at an averaged of around 900.000, complemented by a commercial job population of around 350.000. There have been some fluctuations that brought it above 1.000.000 and some that brought it below 750.000. Regardless, it's a beauty to look at with all it's modern New York building style-ness. The city's budget is also pretty insane. Here we see the city on an economic downturn, with a slumping population and a money flow barely in the green. In it's earlier stages of development, the city has made as much as $70.000 in profits per month (which allowed for the large $44.000.000 in city funds to accrue in just a few hours). I believe the current situation is a result of me being lazy and trying to push it as far as it will go without zoning entire new cities surrounding this one. One of the main reasons why it is such a fiscal success is the neighbor deal system I have going on with the adjacent industrial and commercial job cities. ALL squares with a side that touches Apex must purchase water from Apex. The overhead from these deals is substantial enough to bring fortune to the town. Currently the total water demands of all cities combined is somewhere around 3.500.000 cu/month. Thus I maintain 18 large water pumps plus 4 or 5 smaller ones for good measure. Of course a city this size has it's drawbacks, especially if a city this size is built without any highways or elevated railways. The commute time is just above 120 which pretty much explains the large-scale abandonment of most of the southeastern side of town (there are only industrial cities zoned in this direction; the commercial cities I made are on the other side for some reason...). Furthermore, The amount of trash this monster makes just atrocious. It currently exports above 4.000 units of trash per month to neighboring industrial cities with the means to deal with it - keep in mind that I have over 30 recycling centers in place throughout the city. This is only the beginning. I've been taking it slow because of the tedious infrastructural and civic upgrades that need to be dealt with prior to rezoning each of the square sections as high density (i.e schools, hospitals, subways, bus stops, parks, etc.). As a result close to half of the city remains at only medium density. After another day of more zoning we shall see just how far this thing can go. Yes, Apex is quite the marvel of modern city building. I really look forward to seeing it maxed out.
  4. Small City Going Big

Hello all, and welcome to my new CJ. I just recently started a new city in a plains region with which I intend to test the limits of unmodded urban development. My main goal is to create multiple cities in the region that contain nothing but residential zoning (and if possible, strictly high wealth). I've done a fair amount of seaching across YouTube and I hadn't found much in the way of what I'm trying to do, so I thought I'd give it a go. I'm already a few hours into the project, and it just so happens that as I was googling forum posts for tips on how to grow cities, I came across this site. A quick look around gave me the idea to set up shop here. Furthermore, it ended my need to search for tips. Starting with this first entry, I will do everything I can to grow my city barring all outside assistance, providing regular updates for you to enjoy. Hopefully I can create something fantastic from this. So, without further ado, I'm off the get this thing started. Ciao P.S. For those of you who noticed, it is indeed past 5:00 AM, and I am indeed rather sleep deprived. I find this is the time when my best ideas come.
  5. Introduce Yourself Here!

'sup... I'm Jones Murphy. Currently a student at the Georgia Institute of Technology, intending to study Computer Science. Got into SimCity 4 quite a while ago, but never really built any serious cities until now. I saw there was a City Journal subforum on this site and I thought it might be cool to start one, then look back through it when my city is freakin huge. And that's the story of how I got here. The end.
