How Local and Trade Depot deliveries work
NovaBlazer posted a topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
I think there is some general confusion as to how local delilveries from resource providers work versus trade depot deliveries. I am going to take a chance at tackling the hierarchy of events that can occur. My mine makes ore My ore gets moved to the smelter directly from the trucks at the mine. My smelter makes alloy. My alloy gets moved by my smelter trucks directly to the processor factory. My factory makes processors My processors get moved by the processor factory trucks to my TV factory. My factory makes TV's My TVs are moved by TV factory trucks to my depots. Depots/Ports then sell the items by either rail, boat or by *ug* trucks that come from the global market. Do I sometimes get items moved out of the depot that were earmarked for export and instead they go to local delivery: Yes. Do I sometimes get items moved out of the "Use Locally" depot that get delivered to the resource consumers: Yes. In almost all cases the decision tree is thusly, Resource is made/produced Resource will be deliever by the producer trucks to another consumer of your resource in your city. IF there are no consumers in your city for that resource the resource is taken to the depot IF there are no depots the resources sit at the original producer (step 1) until there is a need for them. IF there are no resources available at the producer site, delivery will come from a depot. IF there are no resources available at a depot and there is a depot set to import the item, a depot import order is placed. Now... questions I still have, and after many hours of watching the trade window... is IF a depot with resources is closer than a resource producer who gets the call from the consumer to deliver the resources... 2nd thing, If two trucks attempt to fulfill an order, one can be turned away at the place where the order is to be fulfilled because the other arrived first and filled up the stock. The truck that was turned away will then return to the depot and dump your goods in the trash. Pretty sure this is a bug. Upon review... this is far more Trade Nerdy that I expected.-

Freight train ports are worthless, killing game for me
DHarrisG posted a topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Problems with freight trains are killing the game for me. Although some have claimed that freight trains can pick up 100 tons of a product (say, coal) at a time, I can only get trains to pick up 10 tens at a time, the amount that two measly trucks can carry (athough the ports themselves hold up to 100 tons, the trains only pick up 10 tons per trip). And there is only one freight train running in the entire cluster (with only 2 freight cars) - I can see it in City View (with the Trade specialization button turned on, so the trade icon appears over it) travelling slowly around all the cities, even ones that haven't been claimed yet! And this single freight train takes about 9 hours to do its long worthless loop around the cluster until it gets to my train depot, with the result that the whole train depot (which cost me about 500,000 simoleons to get all the necessary authorizations like HQ's and to build the depot itself, with all the necessary edits) only delivers about 50 tons a day worth 36,000 simoleons in profits, which is useless when you need to reach 700,000 simoleons in profits. I have about 95 truck deliveries a day and only 3 train deliveries (a box in the lower right corner gives these numbers), which isn't remotely worth it when trains carry only 10 tons per trip. Moreover, I couldn't even get a single freight train to show up until I first blew up my pre-existing passenger station and ran a road between the trade port and the loader that touches the rail tracks (although I don't know if these had any effect or if I just had to wait until the powers that be decided to finally start a freight train running). And unlike freight trucks, which say how much they are carrying (0 out of 5 or 5 out of 5), the freight trains don't say how much they are carrying, just that they came from a train depot. I can deduce that they are only carrying 10 tons of coal by looking at the Recent Transactions chart on the Finances page, which shows 12,000 when a train stops and 6,000 the rest of the time (for the trucks). And I can see that there are only two coal cars. Anyone who has seen a freight train take five minutes to pass, with over a hundred freight cars, knows how absurd this is. This has been a major disappointment to me, since I spent hours setting up a beautiful rail system running around the outer edge of the city all the way to the mines to avoid the traffic pileups that trucks can run into and the pollution. And it is so unrealistic to have freight trains carry only as much as two lousy trucks. Maxis, please correct this so that much longer freight trains arrive more frequently picking up much larger loads.- 38 Replies
