How to seamlessly play simcity 4 on windows 8 with GTX670
Llubbull posted a topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
Simcity 4 deluxe edition. Version 1.1.641.0 Since SimCity 5 was a total let down for me, I decided to go back to SImCity 4. I searched net for almost a week to figure out how to get it run smoothly on windows with an NVidia Gtx670 card. Step-by-step guide. How to install: If you have an older installer, make sure that you patch it up to the latest v1.1.640 the new digital editions are up to-date. Now go ahead and install the game as admin. I installed on C:, but you can choose whatever drive you want to. now, you should download and install the first mod This is an awesome tool which will let you tweak a lot of stuff) Before you start the game: In the launcher specify the parameters such as : Custom resolution. fulscreen/windowed Sowfware/DirectX/OpenGL (Both openGl and DirectX didn't work for me) CPU count etc Now go ahead and launch the game: Here you can have 2 scenarios a) game does not start b) CTD C) you get lucky everything goes smooth. Skip the rest and go to graphics card section below. For me both a & b happened. 'a' happened because I was not running the game in compatibility mode for "windows XP SP 2". So, go ahead and change it right away. Right click on the SimCity4 shortcut on the desktop and select properties to modify this. 'b' happened because the game did not initiate in the "software rendering mode". Sometimes the launcher doesn't kick in this right away. So, in order to force the game to do it automatically. - in SimCity4.exe properties, select "run in 640 X 480 screen resolution" option under compatibility tab, then go to launcher and select windowed option. - now go ahead and start the game. The game will crash with a message "could not initialize the graphics card". say ok. then another message will pop "SimCity 4 will run with the software driver when next launched" Click OK. - Now go ahead change everything the back to normal ie., in SimCity4.exe properties, UNselect "run in 640 X 480 screen resolution" option under compatibility tab, then go to launcher and select FULL SCREEN option. - Relaunch the game, and it should be up and running this time. How to make SimCity 4 recognize the modern graphics card. First locate the SimCity 4 Deluxe install folder and the two files . Graphics Rules.sgr and Video Cards.sgr these 2 files contains the information regarding graphics hardware. We will edit these to include our awesome cards. First go ahead and make a back up, in case you mess up something. a)Graphics Rules.sgr - open using notepad, and find (Ctrl+F) "partialRule "Fast card" -any" below that you will find a number of cards. Go ahead and add yours as well. Since mine is GTX 670 I added the following: stringMatch cardIdentity "NVIDIA*GeForce GTX670*" stringMatch cardIdentity "NVIDIA*GeForce GTX 670*" stringMatch cardIdentity "GeForce*GTX*670*" stringMatch cardIdentity "NVIDIA*GeForce*GTX*670*" I added all the variations since I don't know the correct syntax Now click save (If you installed in C: it wont let you save, so save somewhere else and replace) b)Video Cards.sgr - open using notepad, and find (Ctrl+F) "vendor "NVIDIA" 0x10b4 0x12d2 0x10DE" for NVIDIA cards (for ATI cards ""vendor "NVIDIA" ") and add the following line card 0x1189 "GeForce GTX 670" card 0x1189 "GeForce GTX670" here the number "0x1189" is the device ID of your card. How do you find the device ID on windows 8? Press Wondows + x and select device manager. Once in device manager, expand the Display adapters section, here you fill find your graphics card. Right click on it and select properties. Select details tab. Once you are here, from the pull down menu select "Matching device Id" in my case the description was like "pci\ven_10de&dev_1189" and that 1189 is your device ID. and 10de is the vendor id. So go ahead and add that. and save. You're done. Enjoy building your dream city! My setup is 3 dell 19in in nvidia surround with a resolution of 1440x2700. 8gig ram 2700k 4.5ghz (OC'd) GTX 670 The game worked beautifully. I hope it works for you as well. Don't forget to save frequently. For those with nVidia cards: Control panel vers; 7.1.740.0 3D settings: Make a profile for SimCity with the following settings.
