Huoshan Island West
poshbakerloo posted a City Journal entry in Shuangzidao County - England via China
Huoshan Island is a small volcanic island off the Chinese mainland. A huge area of unclaimed land called Shuangzidao (Twin Islands) – latterly handed over to the UK as an overseas territory. Vast natural resources and huge trade potential with China due to its location meant the UK authorities have rushed through plans to develop the island, with plans later on for the mainland also. The western end of the island has more flat land for development, however it is still limited so houses have been nestled into the hills where it is not too steep. An overview of the current development: Buy your dream home in the Huoshan Hills. Space is limited so developers have been busy buying up land on the hills. This land is harder to construct high rise apartments like the rest of the island, so they have stuck with a more suburban feel for families. Highrise luxury apartments. The limited land available has meant that most of the development is very dense. The road layout of the island allows easy driving conditions - when traffic allows. Currently there is no public transport, however plans are being drawn up for metro rail. Land reclamation took place along the north shore to fit in the harbour facilities. The demand for industry is far higher than the available space on the island. This had lead to problems with water and air pollution. The local authorities are trying to get pollution levels down, but they are also aware that this may damage the economy of this area. -
Huoshan is the mysterious volcanic island where it all starts. The edges of the island are quite flat which allows for easy building, but thing quickly become steep and hilly towards the middle of the island. Here is what happens when you lay out the roads and wait 20 years: The first thing that the new local authority did was to lay out the roads. This was a whole new town, a chance to (try and) get things right. Most old English towns are a maze of narrow streets with ugly 1960s roads bulldozed through the centre. Huoshan Island was a chance to make things work first time round. The flat areas are set in a standard grid format with avenues to carry heavier traffic. Towards the hills things get more interesting! A tunnel had to me build to allow for north - south traffic avoid what would become a residential area. The last night before the builders move in (notice the suddenly enlarged city hall). Skip forwards 20 years and things look a little different. The massive development and influx of people from England and China has brought chronic traffic problems and high pollution levels. This will be an issue the authorities fix at a later date. Night falls across the busy new business district. Dirty industry brings lots of jobs, but also pollution. High Tech industry in the hills. Away from the smog on the north of the island, high tech industry flourishes near residential areas. The small amount of land available on the island has resulted in a dense population. This part of town isn't quite so desirable.
