Hi everyone! The way it goes, the Moose Factory should reach its 100th page really soon. I wonder what kind of ceremony we are going to do. Is there a special committee to deal with such an event? Is Quebec City area federalist? From what we now of the last referendum, yes. However, like in an election context, people might vote against something, not for something. Since the government is the biggest employer here and that employees were not, as usual, happy about their salaries... some of them probably voted against the government (PQ then) and not against the separation. The least we can say is that people here are opportunists. Separatist movement has strong roots in everyday people, especially what is the traditionally French-labor lower class. I won't give you an history class but even by keeping an objective perspective, it's difficult not to say that there was a huge discrimination against French speaking persons in the past. The economical domination of English west-Montrealer is still present and had been built mostly on French speaking workers sweat of the last centuries. If you add spicy ingredients like Lord Durham report, the merge of the public debt of both Canadas (Upper's was 5 times higher than Lower's one), it's no surprise to find a strong popular basis for independence, especially in some part of Montreal where these French workers used to live. That movement is probably difficult to see from the outside since most of the medias have a strong federalist bias. A stronger voice might be the artists. Our province is a very fertile ground for artists and a lot of them are supporting independence cause. Many of them like singers, writers, are doing it to help protect our very different culture and language. About the seat at UNESCO, I won't coment like I would like to do since I'm not totally aware of the subtleties about it. Since its purpose is about science and culture, I can't see why it could be a problem to have Quebec province a stronger or more independent voice since our culture, like it or not, is obviously different. I'm not sure that a single voice coming from Ottawa is the best to represent English Canada, French Canada, Firsts Nations... @N_O_Body: BQ support is usually strong here. However, it's not the first time that people here react an unpredictable way. If the separatists lost the last referendum, it's not only because of west-Montreal-English and immigrant votes... Quebec City region is another reason. Now why? Liberals were out from the start, no need to explain why. Why Conservative? I think that power is the main factor in that choice. Other factors... Quebec City is 98% Francophone so we're less afraid of what some people name the English threat (assimilition); compared to other regions, average wealth here is higher since there's a lot of state employees, so few large industries; people here are sensitive to $, less to environment and social issues (in part because of the points above); people here more concerned by there little comfort bubble than large scale issues (war, looting of poor countries)... The answer is much complex than that but it might give an idea. No need to tell you that I'm disappointed. Finding a job was difficult for me before, now it should be worse. Environment and international cooperation efforts will be switch the opposite way to industries-business and army... Is the Conservative hold here a long term trend? Difficult to tell. It won't disappear for a while but they benefit a lot from the protest vote against Liberals. Among the 8 Conservatives elected, some of them are only boring passengers. Even their star sounds like an empty shell (she was a professional political image maker before). Another one is very interesting... A friend of mine moved in an appartment last summer and the leaser before him was one of the new Conservative elected. Strange is the fact that she still receive many checks coming directly from the Liberals at her ex-apartment... After a small inquiry, it seems that she's red to the bone but went as a Conservative puppet to split the vote and reduce the probability of BQ being elected.
