It's not so much you need a supercomputer, you just need a super laptop. Remember, laptop are made to be mobile. They have to lower power requirements, which means sacrificing computing power. Laptops are made for business work. not made for playing games, unless you get a higher end gaming laptop. BTW, which Asus laptop do you own (full model number usually on bottom would be helpful), I just noticed your last post you said you mistyped your laptop manufacturer. Asus usually have gaming oriented laptops. even if low-end gaming. You may only need to switch from integrated graphics to your dedicated graphics card for playing games.

Cannot start new map!
rmjohnson144 replied to tourist585's topic in Cities: Skylines Technical Help Q&A
The game hasn't even been out for two months. not sure if that qualifies as a long time. lol Remove all mods completely and try again. I'm sure it is at least one of them causing the issue. If the game starts, then load them back one at a time until you find the culprit. You need to find a host to post poctures to and link them here. Imageshack, tinypic, etc. Sorry, I haven't used the map creator. Good luck -=Mark=- -
Yes, you can play with even the 25 tile unlock. Problem is that you'll not be able to fill the map and you'll need toc play on lowest settings after a short while. You will have issues filling the default 9-tiles. My 425k pop city uses only 2.5gb-3.5gb of ram. your 4gb will be on the weak side. considering you'll need aboit 1.5gb for windows to run, then you'll have 2.5 for the game. If you want mods you'll need more ram. Mods use up a lot of memory. If you play vanilla CS, then you'll be fine.

Segregation works anymore ?
rmjohnson144 replied to Roger_C's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Sims typically only walk a few blocks, so it's best to mix residential and commerce together. Typically I zone like this: CRRRCRRRC RCRRRCRRR RRCRRRCRR RRRCRRRCR CRRRCRRRC As you can see all of R is next door to C and will walk to work or shop. A lot of it depends on the type of city and layout of the map. I use no mods. Haven't needed any for any type of city. Of course I've learned most all of the workarounds. I also avoid mass-transit like the plague. They have issues of their own. Edit: Forgot about the segregation. You may want to look for newer videos. The early video have had patches since then. Try 2014 and newer. I don't use segregation. Thought it was unrealistic, plus never had a situation where I needed it. -
Game won't load at all!

If you want to get it running, try making a new thread with your system specs and give as detailed step-by-step process that leads to the black screen. -
Simcity Is Officially Retarded! But...
rmjohnson144 replied to KaintGetRight's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
It only takes one complaint to get your attention. Before things get out of hand. Things look fine. Make sure you have a couple detective wings and a couple crime prevention centers at the precinct. Make sure you have 5 hats of education. This is the best crime prevention. It's hard to see the rest of your city, but it seems fine on the crime front. This is most important for casinos. especially high wealth. They leave rather easily from crime. Post any concerns you have and we can make sure things stay in order. But half a million an hour is awesome. keep up the good work. -
SimCity Error Turned My City To Rubble
rmjohnson144 replied to Antonio Mendoza's topic in SimCity (2013) Technical Help Q&A
Without an error number or description, we can't do much. Try rebooting your computer and trying again -=Mark=- -
While the game has tons of issue to say the least. What you are experiencing is normal play. You have three wealth tiers of sims and you aren't providing for them all. You only need to worry about low-wealth for the game to be happy. If people can't find work they leave after a short while. This is part of the Cities of Tomorrow expansion pack. I don't own it so I comment on it much other than I know it's picky on it's construction. There are youtube videos of how to build them successfully. I don't know about leaps and bounds. But it is a totally different game. Skylines plays more like a city designer. So you can create your city any way you want with little consequences of your action. Simcity 2013 however, plays more like a city builder in that you have consequences for poor city design. You city will burn down to the ground if not laid out correctly. Sadly, it is full of bugs and you'll need to find the workarounds to build a successful city. Skylines has a bright future though. It has a good path for upgrading and a lot of potential to surpass Simcity in short order. Simcity has been abandoned by Maxis and closed down the main Maxis office. So I don't see another Simcity main game unless they get nostalgic or something.

Game exe stops working
rmjohnson144 replied to TonkaOne's topic in Cities: Skylines Technical Help Q&A
This sound like it eliminates the game as an issue. What are you computer specs? Video card, memory, cpu, etc. If it an oem computer (dell, HP, gateway, etc.) then please post the make and model number. If it has a generic model number like say pavilion x360. Try looking for a more detailed model number on the back of the case or somewhere around your computer. -
Simcity 2013 already tried the MMO and failed miserably. This type of game just isn't MMO friendly at all. You'd need all player playing at the exact same time. If anyone leaves, then other cities get out of whack. You can't really let the AI take over the person's city who left as then your city would get morphed into what the AI wants, not what you want or it would just burn to the ground. And god forbid if someone abandons a city and you lose any/all support completely. Even with Simcity's 2km x 2km cities, the game just ran too long and people left to never come back or just abandoned it. It just takes too much time to build a city. It's a great idea, just can't be executed.

Game exe stops working
rmjohnson144 replied to TonkaOne's topic in Cities: Skylines Technical Help Q&A
Bootleg copy? If you're in the habit of downloading pirated software, you may want to run your anti-virus programs. Try uninstalling the program. Go into appdata (it is hidden) and delete the colossal order folder to hopefully eliminate all traces of config files that have been corrupted from pirated version. maybe run CCleaner to remove everything. make sure you run the registry cleaner also. If all else fails. tell win 8.1 to do a fresh install from scratch. factory reset mode. That should clear up all issues. Just backup before hand. Stay away from pirated software and you should have no issues. -=Mark=- -

You ATI Radeon HD 2600 is below minimum. I don't think it would be wise to upgrade the iMac for this game. If you want a laptop, you'll need a quad core with an 860m or better. anything lower may cause low graphics settings on bigger maps mostly filled. Probably around $1200 USD. The HP and Acer have many, many variations of that specific model number. You may want to post the full model number. However this Acer Aspire 17v Nitro model looks really nice. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834314681 ASUS ROG G750JM 17-Inch Gaming Laptop http://www.amazon.com/G750JM-17-Inch-Gaming-Laptop-VERSION/dp/B00IKF2H12 This 17-inch ROG looks cheaper http://store.asus.com/us/category/A23720 -

This game is AWFUL...
rmjohnson144 replied to Urbanator's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
The BoC mod (Build Outside City) should be in some of the mod packs. Try SUGC (Simcity User Generated Content), Skye Storme's Modpack. I think it is called Skyepak? I have a link to one of the old version 3.1 iirc (3.2 is latest) in one of my other threads.(skye's website has been down for some time now. I can't find it right now. I'll post later, dinner is ready now. Later -=Mark=- -
You may want to check oit the SUGC mod thread and get advice from the horses mouth, so to speak. He will know much more about your issue than anyone. These are the problems that come with mods. Not to mention if you installed other mods as well. causing potential conflicts. My advice, is remove all mods and play until you master the game basics somewhat. then test them out one by one.

A PC for Cities Skylines
rmjohnson144 replied to H2RS's topic in Cities: Skylines Technical Help Q&A
Is there some reason you don't just use the imac? It seems pretty good. A quad core and 6750m video. The one listed is very low powered CPU. It is a dual core celeron. The GTX 750 is fair. Just above minimum iirc. This game is very CPU intensive. Quad core will go along ways. Especially above 9-tiles. You may do okay with the default 9-tile city. But since you're in Italy, this may be your best option. or just use iMac as it will probably be more powerful. -
Fixing "Choppy" graphics
rmjohnson144 replied to spokelips's topic in Cities: Skylines Technical Help Q&A
Actually the GTX-660 is much more powerful than the GTX-750 Ti. 50% to double the power. In fact, the GTX-750 Ti loses to the GTX 650 Ti is most cases and I think it average just slighter faster on average. Individual programs vary from slower to faster. but averages are roughly equal. A GTX 660 isn't going to give a huge increase in FPS. On average probably 10ish%. In this game, that is CPU heavy, you should get above that figure. 10% may not sound like much, but it does help tremendously. You can see TruthZero stating at 80k he has to lower his settings in order to play. I think he has other issues, as I can play my 425k pop map with the default high settings with a bit of lag (20-30 fps). A 600 should give you better chances at 1-million pop without going all low/off settings. -
If you have 0 unemployment, then all of your sims are working already. The Edificio may be holding commuters from other cities, which don't seem to take jobs like they're suppose to. It has always been this way. I think it is part of the glassbox engine that maxis has already reported as partially broken and unfixable without rewriting the game.

This game is AWFUL...
rmjohnson144 replied to Urbanator's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Sorry for the arrogance. I got an arrogant vibe from your post and went arrogant myself. I'm afraid I'm not following your line of thinking. But origin logs an hour minimum each time you load game. and may round up to the next hour when you quit. I know it'll add an hour when I log to the wrong server and have to exit and log to the right server. The reasons pop up at the top of the screen while playing that usually go ignored. I know I always ignore them anyway. It usually says why they go abandoned, but not always. Rubble never says why they burned down other than fire. It would be nice if they always said why, as I know I can get several different pop up warnings, so it would be more helpful as to why they burnt down/abandoned. Not sure what you mean by reasonable tax rate? Tax rates affect happines. for low level 9-12 is 0 happiness. higher taxes have negative happiness bonuses. Lower taxes have positive happiness bonuses. 20% tax keeps new sims from moving in. I'd need a screen shot to see that. Never witnessed that before. Not sure what you meant by that? I never stated you didn't. Plus I said there are a lot of actual real bugs in the game. Just the ones you reported weren't directly from bugs. Thanks for being the better person and not retaliating. Actually, there is a lot less micromanagement in the game than you think. Once you learn the workarounds and bugs, then it is very simple. Just enough micro to make it fun, and just enough consequences to make me want to return and play. The past simcities have been more of a mapmake (build elegant cities) than a city builder, in that there have not really been any devastating effects on your city for bad planning. This game make you plan correctly or your city will actually burn to the ground. It lacks any good tutorials or manuals on how things interact with each other for the beginner to be very successful. Then since it is known this game has tons of bugs, then everybody thinks it is a bug they are experiencing, rather than poor mayoral management. Hope this post was agreeable. lol -=Mark=- -
Fixing "Choppy" graphics
rmjohnson144 replied to spokelips's topic in Cities: Skylines Technical Help Q&A
My comment is this is only a temporary workaround. In short order your city will start growing and soon will become very laggy rather quickly and you'll be back in the same boat. Except you won't be able to lower your settings anymore. You may just have to stick with smaller cities for a while until you can save enough for an upgrade. I wish you good luck. -=Mark=- Mark - I'm already looking into picking up something like a Nividia 660 style card just because of the game for my 'puter. Being retired does put a slight crimp in the finance dept. tho'. I'm not down to either eating or else buying a video card, but it's still a cost I have to figure out if I'd want to endure. Yeah, I totally understand. I'm on a fixed income myself and know about tightening the budget here and there. Luckily I have a generous father who helps me out a lot. I used to have to buy my high dollar stuff on layaway, but that option seems to have vanished now a days. Also, check out ebay, you can get good deals and ebay has good protection so you don't get ripped off. Just check out the seller's history. I see a lot of deals on GTX 660 for under $100. -
Final tweak requests
rmjohnson144 replied to Rufus Honker IV's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
That will never get fixed. It is part of the regional bug and is a glassbox engine issue that requires a total rewrite. If you want to keep students in your city don't build regional mass-transit. Both regular buses and high school bus will send then into the region. Remove them both and you should be on on education for at least 90% education (4.5 hats) Since there hasn't been any real game mechanics fixes in almost two years. The only thing I can see being done in the next patch is shutting down the servers completely in whole or part. They've already shut down the main Maxis studio and fired pretty much the whole crew, except a lucky few. It would be nice to just fix all of the basic non-mechanics issues. typos, freeway fix for the great works, balancing, warning meters to proper warning signals, etc. Just the stupid things that are easy to fix and require no code rewriting or searching. -

This game is AWFUL...
rmjohnson144 replied to Urbanator's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
It's quite obvious you have just started playing. There is no way you played HUNDREDS of hours to only just now so say something. You are told when they go abandoned, you just aren't listening. See, they tell you. You just didn't get the answer you wanted. If your sims die across the street, then it's should be very obvious to you that it is full already. Again, you aren't looking at the info correctly. It's not the amount of crime per day, it's the criminals at large that is the problem. You need more education hats (levels) to reduce (Prevent at large)crime. Add the crime prevention to the precinct to prevent at large, and add detective wings to arrest already at large. Education also prevents fires, deaths, reduces power consumption (solar panels on buildings), enables recycling for extra cash. Education is the single most important thing in the game. It not only pays for itself, but may even make money in the long run. You have to satisfy low-wealth, medium wealth, and high wealth jobs. Luckily the game only really cares about low-wealth jobs. Keep low-wealth satisfied, then you will have happy sims. If you build medium and/or high wealth residents, then you will create another demand and get complaints because you can please all of the sims. Maxis made this game so it stays imbalanced so you can't balance it out. Just focus on low-wealth, then once you figure out the quirks (bugs), then you can focus on the other wealth levels. There are many factors for abandoned buildings. Usually high taxes, too far away from jobs, wrong wealth classes mixed up, but most likely traffic issues. For best results make a mixture of residential and commerce of 3R to 1 C like this. CRRRCRRRC RCRRRCRRR RRCRRRCRR RRRCRRRCR CRRRCRRRC This way R is always next to C and they can walk to work/shop reducing traffic greatly. Actually, they got too ambitious making this game and just overloaded it and didn't leave room for expansion. I think it is a far superior game to SC4, just way too small and bug ridden (most have been fix, but a lot are still there.) Sadly Maxis' hands were tied and were forced to build a facebook version of Simcity. From the looks of it EA demanded a lot of changes along the way and just destroyed the franchise. They even closed down the Maxis Emeryville plant. The main Simcity plant. FYI, you haven't run into any of the bugs yet. Just poor mayoral skill and not knowing the stupid AI rules. Just remember, this Simcity plays like a game. If you poorly plan a city it will fall apart fast. It is unforgiving. Like it should be. SC4 was just a glorified map maker with very little consequences to poor city planing and became boring quick. For me anyway. I don't care for building pretty cities. I'm more of a god gamer type that needs to keep it alive. It must be or you wouldn't have posted. Good luck -=Mark=- -
A PC for Cities Skylines
rmjohnson144 replied to H2RS's topic in Cities: Skylines Technical Help Q&A
Hi rmjohnson144, Yes, I can assemble pc components. The budget is: 330 USD max I know it's hard to find a good pc gaming at this price.. but I just want a good pc to run on medium-high setting Cities Skylines, so I can't spend much.. So please, if you like, you can list some good components to build a PC can boot cities skylines on medium-high. Thanks!! You may end up on ebay fora used system at that price. A GTX 650 is a little low, but you should get all 9-tiles full without many mods installed. I have a GTX 650 Ti which is about twice as powerful, and I have about 15-tiles full on high settings and it's starting to lag at 1080p resolution. You missed out on an awesome deal on Newegg last night. It was a HP Proliant server with a quad core and a graphics card slot (empty, no graphics, since servers don't need one) for $215! All you would have needed was a graphics card and 8GB ram (Only has 2gb) and an operating system ( Maybe reuse your old windows key?) Anyway, that ship has sailed and now is $330. I seen some nice ones on ebay. This one has AMD quard CPU, 4GB RAM, Win7, but a cheap video card (not gaming card). If you can get it for under $200(minus $20 for shipping). Then you could get a GTX 650 Ti or better with the money you save(under $75 on ebay.), or a GTX 660 (under a $100 on ebay.). I can't see the PSU it comes with as a GTX 660 needs twice the power to run than the GTX 650 Ti) http://www.ebay.com/itm/AMD-PHENOM-II-955-X4-PROCESSOR-3-2GHz-4GB-DDR3-GAMING-PC-Win-7-ASUS-M4A79XTD-EVO-/221750447467?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item33a15b4d6b This one isnn't half bad. Has 8-core AMD and 4GB RAM, with a GTX-6670. It's about a GTX 650 if I recall correctly. but $340 free shipping. You'd have to save for a better card down the road. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gaming-PC-/271843887272?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f4b2888a8 This one could be the one, but at $300 plus $55 shipping. so $355 if no one else bids, AMD quad core, 6GB RAM, 6870 video (about same as GTX 660). Also has a 17-inch Monitor, keyboard, and mouse!!!! It also had a new CPU(quad core), GPU(6870), and Power supply(PSU) (no info on PSU) http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gaming-PC-Quad-Core-6gb-RAM-XFX-HD-6870-Monitor-Mouse-Keyboard-/201337290657?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2ee0a33fa1 -
Valve: mods can now be sold for a price on Steam, effects all games!
rmjohnson144 replied to Xenocity's topic in Cities: Skylines General Discussion
The fun thing is that the other game buy platforms and such made the monopoly for steam by staying very expensive when steam drops the prizes. Especially Origin. Origin is so expensive that you can often get their games for almost the half of the price on Steam. Uplay by Ubisoft is also expensive, but it's not as bad as Origin. I still prefer Steam over Origin (because Origin is just crap), but they're not hitting the right road. I think they made a steep turn into a dead end. They will have to go back if they want Steam to continue. But as I said, Origin and Uplay still exist. Not that many of their games have mods, but the ones that do, could create a workshop on their own site (if they didn't already) and slowly pulling people towards them. I think Valve already knows that what they have done, could have been not a very smart move, but they still have a big monopoly. As soon as that monopoly vanishes and they have to compete with other brands, They will have to stop charging for mods. So my conclusion is: (it's hard to get it out of my mouth) Use Origin and Uplay and such more often. I think you need to rechange your opion of switching to EA (Origin). They already own any game content you make for their games. This means if you create an awesome mod. EA can use it without your permission and not pay you a dime for it. They own it outright. Another reason there is very little mods for Simcity 2013. https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20140113/11244025851/ea-embraces-simcity-players-releases-useless-modding-tools-promises-supposedly-impossible-offline-mode.shtml Here's the only link I found. I am horrible with google search. While the Steam Workshop will pay you and give you credit may be only temporary. What I don't get is how no one seen this coming. I said the day they announced it that they were now going to have a mod store so we can buy all mods now. Since the mobile market does it, why not everyone? lol At least get paid for it now, while you can. lol People are just going to have to do their due diligence on researching what DLC they buy. DLC creators will also have to make sure their product is bug-free and of high quality in order to get paid. Word will get around fast. This can only be a good thing in the long run. Now creators have the choice of not selling on Workshop and get more money selling privately, or sell on workshop and pay a high price, but get more sales and potentially more money. That's just the way capitalism works. Ask CO what it cost them to create their game on Unity, plus sell on Paradox and Steam, plus Bethseda, whatever they do? now you see why they charge 45%. OOps, company, gotta run. -=Mark=-
