Megatower Strategy and Problems Discussion
UntCaptain replied to Griffon's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
@Griffon, thanks very much for starting this post. Before reading this I thought that megatowers were another lost cause, how wrong was I! After reading through this thread yesterday lunch time at work when I got home I was ready to give it another go, I followed the advice posted here in a previous post which I'm going to repost (just going over the point again) Levels 1-3 of any megatower (except those you want entirely office) need to be residential Level 4-5 park or skybridge (if you want to maximise tower capacity plop a park crown) Levels 6-8 more apartments if residential is in demand, or 1 mall if in demand (check the demand bars in the bottom right of your megatower) if nothing is in major demand add an office block, but I try to keep all office blocks in 2 buildings only It's important to maintain schooling also in your city, poor schooling and your city may (like mine) have a garbage problem at 300k population. 1 final thing I have found is that building a city first, then adding mega towers helps. Your city needs to be mainly made up of 60% residential 20-30% commercial and industrial if you want. That way the megatower needs are met by the surrounding population (as again was posted in a previous post) remember only 1/2 a mega tower will shop/work in that block, the rest will commute to other blocks. I have 2 office megatowers both with 7 levels of $$$ offices and 1 skybridge level in my city, both are connected to 3 apartment towers with housing for all wealth levels, I've had no problems at all with any of my layouts from following this strategy. I do try to make sure there is a park level in each megatower though (crown included) Most importantly, don't build too fast, and watch the needs meter in the bottom right, and just build what's needed. -
How many real life hours does it take you to complete a Great Work?
UntCaptain replied to 5uper_Mania's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
I'd like to add my bit if building a space station. It took me 2 hours to send 170k barrels of fuel, 1.6k alloy and 60k computers. From 2 cities in my own reigeon. I had all material stock piled up in numerous trade ports ready though. Set it going and watch a film -
Sewage and Region problems...
UntCaptain replied to MoridinUK's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
You need a department of utility's and you need to plop a sewerage treatment plant, cost is high but you won't have that issue and there's no ground pollution, it just refills your city's water table. In a rush so can't reply to rest of post right now -
1.7 Million Casino Daily Profit
UntCaptain replied to kgpurrs's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
I'm sorry to have to piss on all your posts here, but I'm with kgpurrs. I created a tourism city, with casinos last night. I took $20m from my oil city and built it. I have a fantastic road layout supporting 55k residents. 0 health, crime and fires from the start, with good coverage. My city only has road and rail acces too. I have no air pollution which I've found to be a big city killer. My approval rating is 93% - 97% I've never had it that high in any other city and I've made many. I've followed kgpurrs tourism guide and used my own knoledge to work around some issues I've had. This guy does know what he is talking about, the haters to his stuff need to try it properly, and carefully. The city has to be almost perfect from the start. Yes I had $20m starting cash to play with. But I created the oil city to fund this. My question kgpurrs to you, is a space centre or reigeonal airport a better great work to bring in tourists? Also I'd like to add you to my orign friends list if that's okay. -
So These great works that we can build, have any of you built one yet? Which did you build, and why?
-
Another reason that the amount of oil you drill goes down (12k per day is the highest I've seen at all my oil wells) is because the less oil in the ground the less you can drill for. If the oil patch is pitch black you will get alot. When that starts to go down your drills will just pull more up, your not doing anything wrong as far as I know

Ugh, so close. I set up two more trade ports, one on a rail and one by the water, for a total of three. Two had six ore lots, and the third had four ore lots and two alloy lots. I spent a whole day letting them fill up (I only had about 20 tons of alloy) and then come midnight I let them rip. It was actually very exciting and nerve-wracking, but just before midnight I hit $1.92M. If I had just a bit more alloy it would have easily topped off. I'm just going to let the alloy accumulate a bit more while I continue to export the ore to make even more money. This little attempt obviously netted me quite a lump sum. Happy to help the more trade ports you have the bigger the lump sum, and the bigger the smile I your face

I have found a visual representation of the Simcity Fiasco

Now that is funny!!! rofl -
If you can afford to do this, build 2 or 3 trade ports with rail / boat access and store all your metals and alloys until storage is full. More product stored the better. Have your trade ports just store the metals untill they are full. Then with all the trucks, rail and boats, set them all to export everything, you will clear your stocks in 1 day and make your target. I've done this with computers, and fuel, and alloy. So I know it works Edit: this method works for the $4m also if you have enough trade ports

Nuclear power plants suck water up from the ground aswell as from your water pumps. The nuclear power plant uses 80 gallons of water per reactor. It's quite normal to have to upgrade for more pumps or put another water plant in

That's a good point there, I too started a tourist city using Purrs guide, so far so good (buying all power, water, and sewerage from my other 2 trade towns in my region) I have 2 highway entrance into my city, in a L shape over in 1 corner. I was planning to have my main tourism inside the L and maybe a casino or 2 on the opposite side of the avenue. Then the remaining 1/2 map to be C and R using a brick layout road system. I had not thought about the mass injection of taxis into my city, is there a way to counter this or to maybe change my road layouts ready for the incoming tourism boom?

IGNORE MAYORQUIMBIE!!! Demolishing and unsafe nuclear power plant will cause a grade 2 nuclear explosion killing anything in the blast radius. I've done this so I know. Switch it off and leave it off for the time You need a tech level, not education level. You can get 2 stages if tech level, 1 from college and 1 from university. In order to get students to go to college and university they do need to go to the other schools first, like working up the schools in real life. I always have all schools (not always university) in my towns, all open but with only around 500 seats in each. This was any new residents arriving in your city will get educated quickly. But yea, oh need tech level. The overlay is next to the education overlay, when you have tech purple lines will come on your roads, any industrial or trade buildings will then get skilled workers.

Great Works - Which and Why
UntCaptain replied to UntCaptain's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
I'm not fussed about hourly rate in that city. It's about -$55k and hour But my electronics sales bring in $3.8m a month so I'm still waaaaay in the green. I built the space station last night, so my great works is now up and giving me educated sims -
Great Works - Which and Why
UntCaptain replied to UntCaptain's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Horza3003, what server do you play on? I'd like to add you to my friends list to talk more when I'm online later. It's great to know that all cities get a share of the 100k, even though I'm playing alone in a private region, just means less loading other cites to gift the occasional $1m just before I go bankrupt for spending to fast And much <3 to nuclear reactors! Mine survived 2 meteor showers last night, even had a reactor destroyed, no radioactive fallout though When disasters strike, switch it straight off -
Great Works - Which and Why
UntCaptain replied to UntCaptain's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
That's great info to know thanks. Do you know if the $100k goes to all cities or how does it work? And will be instersing to see if with the tech level the space centre gives if it will provide tech lines for safe nuclear plants in the region too -

Ill build the space station tonight then as I have all resources stockpiled in trade ports ready to go. Once it's built ill post my findings here -
Great Works - Which and Why
UntCaptain replied to UntCaptain's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Provided power isn't an issue for me at all. I have 2 very profitable trade city's. 1 with 10 oil refineries making fuel, and another city with 3 computer processing plants. The computer city has 2 nuclear power stations both with 3 mk3 gen thermal reactors, they put out 4800 mw together so my entire region is covered safely. I was wondering if anyone has actually built the space station. I have trade ports with all the fuel, alloy and computers ready to build it instantly. -
Do you need to keep specilisation HQ?
UntCaptain replied to Horza3003's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Oh can demolish the HQ and upgrades with it to save room. The only problem is if you want to build another building which requires the HQ and upgrades, you have to build them again, which could be a costly $537k. Unless you make a few million trading a month then it's nothing I turn the buildings off once built to save on power but still have acces to new buildings when I want without having to pay to build it again -
Question about how regions work
UntCaptain replied to Ghoulapool's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
What I've found with regards to your 3 city mentioning, 1 for ally, 1 for plastic, 1 to combine them into processors. It is possible and actually doable to do this in a few ways, coming from personal experience. My first city had a population of 200k occupying 1/2 the city tile, all theses were highly educated and recycling ALOT! I had 6 recycling centres which were always working only making plastics and alloy. These would be exported to make money to fund the initial startup operation. Because my city was educated and had a tech level I could build processed plants and use my recycled plastic and alloy and make processors. 0 outgoings buying material, $100k profit selling stuff my town gives me for free. The second city has coal, ore and oil deposits. I mine and drill these out and go through the same process to make processors using them. And with 3 recycling centres I again get more alloy and plastic to make computers. Population 100k, full education and tech levels again. To the rest of the OP's points made I agree. Gift 1 of your own cities in your region say $10m and build all the utility's / power you can have use that to sustain a few other cites few of charge. -
Trigger Disasters on Purpose in Sandbox?
UntCaptain replied to LGMizzell's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
"Working as intended" lol -
I'd like to add to this by saying im currently running a low wealth high density city, 100k population, full education with 4500 students going to my university. I have 1 or 2 fires a month which get put out. 3 - 5 criminals, 0 crimes committed 3 - 5 arrests. The detective wing for the police precinct is fantasitc and I recommend it. My hospital... Well I'm drilling for oil, mining for ore and coal, then processing it all into plastics and alloy, making processors and then onto computers. So I have ALOT of health issues. But that's off point. Good police coverage and it saying 0 crimes is no bug, most towns of criminals but not all commit crimes. No crime, no time

Can't find trade depot
UntCaptain replied to MinGraphics's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Okay easy enough. On the left of the screen is a few small icons. Click the one that looks like a shield (bottom or 1 up from the bottom) and it will pull up a seperate tab along the bottom. You want the middle one, it's a funny looking @ type thing. To get back to the main building menu, click the button on the left just above the shield Hope you find it -
Nuclear Reactors - Not as bad as you think
UntCaptain posted a topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
So my first post on the Simtropolis forums Hi there I've spent many lunch breaks at work reading tips and disasters on the forums here about many things, traffic and bugs being high up there. But I'd like to condense the information I've found about nuclear reactors into this post. So sorry in advance to the people who may have read this info, but some of it is new and I've not seen it while browsing. So here goes... After playing co-op with 2 friends in a region we tried a plan of having 1 city with all services, power, water and sewerage for us all. It was going relatively well untill the 2 residential cities started waning more power. After sending the utility city a few million simolions he built a nuclear reactor and upgraded it with more towers. Knowing what I know now this was a massive mistake! His city was totaly uneducated and none of us knew how to use a nuclear reactor properly. Within 10 mins of real time it had a melt down and wiped out his city with the nuclear fallout. Now while chatting over Skype and hearing this we all found it very funny! The downside to this was all our city's were now up the creek without a paddle, no utility's or services at all, BIG problem. So we gave up on the region and started again. This time I took the lead in building the power supply for the cities, but we all decided to provide our own services water and sewerage. So here's where I start on how to go about building a succesful Nuclear Reactor and powering 4 cities safely. The first thing you need to have in your city is educated sims. So lets run through how to get to 5 star education and 3 star tech levels. Towards the edge or corner of your city build a Grade School. (you will be building all the school around the edge of your city and the university in the middle, it's worth while planning this in advance) Make sure to get bus stops out, I recommend 1 per street, do not plop the stops on avenues as this will cause traffic. Then as your sims start getting educated and you get to the 1 star marker plop down 3 or 4 library's depending on how big your city and population is. Spread these about your city just inside the outer limits of the residential buildings. The library's serve to keep your education levels rising steadily and then keep them high when they get there. By this point you should have a 2 star education city. Now lets get the High School plopped! Put this on the opposite side of the city to the Grade School, don't bother with a gymnasium. (my opinion only there, I just don't feel it's worth the space and cost) Check your map education levels a this point and maybe put on some more school busses, lets get those kids to school! You city should now be well on the way to being a 3 star educated city Lets get the Community College down now again in an opposite corner of your city to the Grade School and High School. It is worth while building the extension for this as all your students from the Grade School and High School will come here for more learning fun! You should now have access to the University, plop it in the middle of your city giving full access for all the city to learn, when this goes down you can close (and demolish if you want) the Grade School and High School, keep the Community College as this serves as an education for new residents coming into your city. So I'm hoping at this point you have a 4 or 5 star educated city and a 2 or 3 star tech level. Awesome stuff eh? So we have people who are clever enough to run a Nuclear Reactor, lets get it plopped!! BUT WAIT!! We aren't there yet!! *goes to get a drink before continuing* Something I've not read anywhere about Nuclear Reactors is that they need A LOT of water, so much so that they not only draw off your water system, but off the lands water table too. Building a Sewerage Treatment Plant next to your planned Nuclear Reactor keeps water in the ground. Plop your Water Pumping Station right next to the Sewerage Treatment Plant so you will never run out of water for the city. When you need to extend your sewerage plant I highly advise to put the filters around the Nuclear Reactor. This keeps plenty of water in the ground and makes sure that it doesn't run dry. Make sure your Water Pumping Station has at least a 100 excess before going any further! Important stuff that is! Okay so we have educated sims and endless, plentiful water supply. Lets plop the Nuclear Reactor!! (Finally *sighs* ) And there you have it, crazy amounts of power with research from the university in your city, enough water to re-float the Titanic, and a non polluting power station. I hope this helps any of you thinking about a reactor in your city or who have had problems in the past. Happy gaming from UntCaptain (online most UK evenings and nights) -
Nuclear Reactors - Not as bad as you think
UntCaptain replied to UntCaptain's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Yea I did that last night on an unsafe nuclear plant. I shut it down before the meltdown occurred then figured ill demolish the lot of it and go back to my 5 coal power plants (yes because 5 power plants are really required in the real world to run 13 of a city and 2/3 heavy mining and smelting operations) BUT demolishing the unsafe nuclear plant gave my radioactive fall out, raping my entire city (it was in the centre). It was next to the ONLY water on the tile and polluted that fully. My whole city is covered in ground pollution, nothing is clean and I have 200 deaths a day even with 4 maxed hospitals. But I still turn over $2m a month with all that
