SimCity: Multiplayer Discussion
Ephemeron replied to Vahr's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
I come here from the year 2009 to say that over-emphasis on multi-player is exactly why CIties XL failed. Now I'm going back to my eternal rest from city building games. See you in another three years. -

You're misunderstanding the point of this post, ALT-F. I don't know if you're old enough to remember the great Redux crash, but it was a historical event that briefly united the entire xkcd hatedom community. Such an inane and attention-seeking display of stupidity on that day filled our hearts with love, or as some internet dialects may call it, 'lulz'. The doomsayer Capn predicted the 'second coming' of such an event, but he must have misread the scriptures, and ended up being off by 20 comics. Now it has finally happened in this one-line blog post, signalling the second horseman of the xkcdpocalypse, the first being the return of Carl. What does this mean? It means that soon Randall will reveal his true identity... Yeah, this will make no sense outside of its original context.

It's been just over a year since they closed the forums at the official site, and now seems the right time to reflect on the history of CXL. Included here are some of the ideas threads (the concept articles, etc - some of these date back to Cities Unlimited), and the complaining ones (including some old favourites such as "Single players neglected" and "It will be a flop"). Blog comments are included as well. All are taken from a Google cache a few days after the forums were closed. This may be a source of nostalgia for some of our members who were there at the time. More importantly it may be of interest to the development of future city builders. Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it. In a way Cities XL was a failed experiment, but it can be learned from. By the principles of science, no experiment can truly fail, as even a negative result proves something. A few points to note: Posts are numbered, giving sme sense of the chronology of when they were made. Just over 100000 posts were made, spanning two years. Links to other threads are of course broken. Quote boxes are not visible. And emoticons are gone. Most of the multi-page threads are incomplete, because finding the cache of one does not necessarily lead to another. They have their page numbers for reference. I had time to convert a few of them to .doc files with all the pages in one document, but most of them are still in the raw html format. And now a few quotes to make us excited: “and this is for ALL buildings in CU! This game will be definitely THE city builder game!! you made my day! i couldn't be happier seeing this! this is a sign of what you guy are doing in MC, and i must congratulate you! ” “If you get rid of the water pipes, you might as well get rid of subway rail.” “I like the idea of a "planetary simulater" per se, but I doubt the devs will take on something like this right away.” “Can you tell me just ONE Single Player mode ONLY feature in this game? Just ONE.” “I Agree, the single player will be the winner out of this. I can see myself playing single player for some time, what with sand box mode.” “We have just been ignored, lied to, and quite possibly betrayed. Just face it, don't deny it.” “But it's out of our hands! We ain't the developers, it isn't our call. Let us just focus on things we CAN do. We can still push forward good ideas, work out concepts for future patches, etc.” “Must I say, it's been great being with this community. I'm really proud of what I have achieved, and all the lessons I have learnt from many others.” “ so they are going to delete all the old forum threads??? if so, it's be sad”

It's a zip file. You open it with whatever program you use to open those, and it should work. For some reason the .zip extension disappears when I download it.

And don't forget pretty much everything in AutoVino's thread.

First this, then the Lockerbie bomber's release. BP's been seeing pretty bad press lately. My parents have stopped buying petrol from them. I daresay BP's reputation couldn't get any worse unless it also turned out that they sponsored that stupid Simcity Societies game. Oh wait...

A satirical BAT based on the world's most popular fast food outlet. Ever wondered where they got their food from? I pulled out all the stops to make their factory as grimy as possible, including the dark and forbidding smoke stacks, the ominous red light inside them, the massive tank of fat, not to mention that there is green slime spilled on the roof. All of this is 'concealed' behind the typical McDonald's facade, billboard and everything. But only the 146 people who work there know what really goes on inside. This BAT functions as a dirty industry, containing both growable and ploppable versions. The growable version will appear in high density industrial zones. The ploppable version appears on the landmarks menu. Both of them have the same-ish stats. Both require water, and will abandon otherwise. Both versions may be installed at the same time. Make sure to keep the file marked essentials, as this contains the model. Here are the stats: Plop cost (ploppable only): §3200 Growth stage (growable only): 3 Bulldose cost: §230 Number of jobs: 146 in I-D Air pollution: 20 over 18 tiles Water pollution: 15 over 18 tiles Power consumed: 100 Water consumed: 80 Flammability: 80 Max fire stage: 4 Construction time (growable only): 28 days Building value/worth: §230 Dependencies: Optional: If you want to see a McDonald's style fence at the front of the lot, then you'll need to download the McDonalds restaurant by Kevdan25. Otherwise don't worry about it. (The only other custom prop is included in the essentials file.) Guarantee: I PROMISE, THIS ONE WON'T BLOW UP YOUR CITIES! There are NO plagiarised props inside this package, in case anyone from the BSC is reading this. Happy downloading! To sum up the situation with Cities XL right now: Just let it burn, or rather should I say, let the charred fragments smoulder a little more.

April fools! Congratulations to the 1000 who fell for it. The prank is over. Do not download it now - it will blow up your cities. (For anyone who wants a blowup lot, feel free to download.) This is an anti-pollution plant designed to superseed all others. The device removes all the pollution (both air and water) from an area of about 10 tiles wide. It is also self-powered (hence being modded as a power plant) and should appear in the utilities menu. Pollution is sucked down a spiral tube into a black hole, which is contained inside an energy field (no chance of your cities being sucked into it). Clean air and water are returned via hawking radiation. The black hole glows at night due to interations with dark energy and subatomic flow. Blah, blah, technobabble... etc. And here are the stats Plop cost: §2300 Monthly cost: §350 Bulldose cost: §1500 Air pollution removed: 255 over 10 tiles Water pollution removed: 255 over 10 tiles Lot size: 2x2 Water consumed: 0 Flammability 255: (so keep it well covered) Max fire stage: 1 Dependencies: None! Disclaimer: Do not use if you are going for eyecandy/realism, since it won't look very realistic in your cities. -
The Unofficial Official Petition to Reinstate MMO
Ephemeron replied to Prof. Scientist's topic in Cities XXL
An overwhelming majority of people seemed to hate the Planet Offer when it was up. A small number of people liked it and, judging by the number of people who have voted, tis hasn't changed. Everything else I have to say has already been said before. Meanwhile, I think this image is what best sums up the state of the Planet Offer right now:
