The ST 6.0 Department of Technical Affairs
Strategist01 replied to Craig-Abcvs's topic in Simtropolis Related
Not a bug, so much as an Issue. Well when I go to ST on my broadband connection (280kbs) It takes a full minute to show anything! And when I'm at school on a 3.5 kbs connection it takes 5-10 mins...Also sometimes I couldn't post, but if you see this post, that issue must have been resolved. Now, not an Issue, but just something I noticed at school. Because of my slow connection I could see exactly how it was loading, and I saw a glimpse of 5.0 underneath 6.0! Is this because Dirk hasn't completely removed 5.0??? And it's just lying under 6.0? -
Ok, I know this is an old thread, but I didn't want to post a double thread... I have the PoP WW title, on PC and I must say that I'm Loving it! One problem that I do have with it is the bugs...I had a peek at the prince of persia forums, and IGN even released a list of bugs for WW and it something like 7-8!!! Anyway play has been good, got two life upgrades (you need this to fight the golem) and now I'm stuck in the clock work tower (th west one) with the slow time bug...which is REALY annoying, and Ubisoft hasn't even released a patch! *Sigh*Looks like I'll have to start over again. Also, I think they should have fixed those camera angles...I know they might have been part of the way to make it more difficult, but when you need to rewind twice, and are left with 1 sand tank, having to chase the dahaka, it does get very annoying. Oh, and this is the first PoP game I'm playing, I did play PoP SoT on PS2, but I didn't go very far...maybe that's because I suck at gaming with consoles, LOL. That was my ramble, so carry on...

Ehhh, I know that many of the forums have lost their stickies...and It has now happened to the SimCity4 Discussion forum...if the staff could look into this *sheepish grin* -
Hi there all! I was just wondering if there was ever going to be a forum called humour?I'm sue there are plenty of people, who, while brwosing the web, se some thing that they laugh at, and that this new proposed forum is where they could post in, and share the love/laughter...after all, isn't laughter the best medicine? i say it should be either featured on the laft, or under the off- topic divsion, as a subforum. any thoughts?

Disabling one structure from developing
Strategist01 replied to Argon Vex's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
I downloaded the SFBT random seasonal woods lots...and I looked at the readme file and they said that it had no pollution absorbtion, park effect, cap relief or anything like that...eyecandy basically. When you say forest lot...what do you mean by trees? Can I use the maxis trees that appear in God Mode? If so, where are they? EDIT: I see now that the 1x1 lots have a -1 effect over 1 tile, and -2 over 2 tiles for the 2x2 lots...but no landmark, or park effect, or water consumption, garbage production, or power consumption...odd. But anway...rather than typing it out yourself, can you direct me to a tutorial? Bear in mind that I can't download anything to the computer that has SC4 on it, as my flash drive broke...Thanks! -
Disabling one structure from developing
Strategist01 replied to Argon Vex's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
I have the SC4 tool, and quite frankly, I have absolutely no idea on how to use it...I tried to modify one of those growable trees so that they would abosrb pollution and have a park/landmark effect, but I couldn't figure out how...guess I'll have to get some tutorials and figure out on how to do that... -
Hey there all, I was playing SC4 a yesterday, and I was just about to start up my hi tech industrial town when... I layed out all the roads (while the game was on pause, no time had elapsed since I started on the building of my city), put in a power and garbage disposal plants, zoned some Med. Density industry, and Because I thought that seeing as there was nothing there that could influence desirability, I should put some parks in. All the time while the game was paused. Anyway, I put the parks in, started the game, and I checked the desirabilty, to see if ID$$$ was going to grow there, and I noticed that for low wealth residential, the whole map was red! I cycled through all of the wealth groups, and all were on extremely low desirability. So I ran the game for a few months, and it didn't go away. I had an idea that the parks might be causing this, and so I bulldozed them. Almost immediately, desirabilty turned back to normal values. And my Hi tech industry was bright green on the zones, and normal everywhere else. So, I think this is caused by being in mayor mode, having the game paused with no time elapsing since you entered mayor mode, and by putting down parks! So wait before putting down parks, and let the game run a little bit, then put down parks. I think that's the solution... PS: I don't know where this is supposed to be, if it's in the wrong forum, please move to the right one.

It may have also been a one time thing, like Livininsim's Riot mayor mansion. also I had also placed down everything that would have been necessary to run the city and get IHT$$$, with power, water, roads, avenues, non-polluting garbage disposal plant. The region was also acting a bit weirdly after I edited it with the sc4 tool, but nothing too hectic, just weird ways of auto levelling the terrain. [whisper]Oh and, rather edit your posts and add those last bits in, the mods don't like it when you double post...[/whisper]

Mike: Out of interest, not that I mind those buildings or any of the maxis buildings...but why can't you use the SC4 tool? Is ilive better suited to this task? -
Ok well it seems that I am now a tourist...wonder when I'll become a traveller....Oh and 66th post! I can't wait for my 666th post

I couldn't find the bug section. Also I was using the standard Maxis parks, the small and medium ones, plus one large one. They do raise it for industry, but it lowered desirability across the board, and it seemed to be caused by me pausing the game before time elapsing, and plopping down parks. Maybe the time pausing has something to do with it...

Well, here in South Africa, out television licence company actually still sues people when they're dead and haven't coughed up. Even over a paltry amount like R200 (about USD 20). My mom didn't have a TV for about 5 years (someone stole it) and so didn't pay her license, because why would you pay for something you weren't using? Anyway, it came up to something horrible, and she phoned just in time for them to stop them suing her, and she managed to work out a per month payment with them...Isn't bureaucracy fun?

Argon Vex You can use ferry terminals, and if you have the NAM the sims will flock from one city to the other, or to wherever there is work. I have built some of the new york region this way, and I actually have overcrowding at ferry terminals, from people wanting to get there. Don't worry. Just place them fairly close to res, make sure they have a parking lot next to them with road connection, and you should be fine! Hope that helps!

Hi there robyx and welcome to simtropolis! Its the way the game engine works. Industrial and commercial recieve workers, and so are no abandoned. Residential have to drive around all day, and when they can't find any jobs, no job zot and abandonment. Where a residentail lot goes to id determined during constuction, as it gives enough time to find a job...hope that helps. If you want to make them not abandon, do what io_bg said.

This was something that I saw today, and found it interesting: Originally posted by Network world: Think two blank sheets of paper are the same? Look closer. Researchers at Princeton University and University College London say they can identify unique information, essentially like a fingerprint, from any sheet of paper using any reasonably good scanner. The technique could be used to crack down on counterfeiting or even keep track of confidential documents. The researchers' paper on the finding is set to be presented at an IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) security conference in Oakland, California, next May. "We've found a way to identify documents even when there was nothing additional printed on them," said Alex Halderman, now an assistant professor at the University of Michigan, who was part of the Princeton team. "This is like an invisible serial number printed on every piece of paper ever made." Two blank pieces of paper may look identical, but if you hold them to a light, you can see that in fact they're unique mash ups of fibers. The researchers say that they can measure this unique texture using a standard 1200 DPI (dots per inch) scanner and some custom software they've written. By turning the page by 90 degrees and scanning it again and again, the researchers can pluck out subtle distinctions in the paper's texture and create a unique digital map of its surface. "You scan it four times and then the software is able -- from these four scans -- to figure out what the surface texture of the document looks like," said William Clarkson, a Princeton graduate student. "Then it can extract essentially a fingerprint of the document." This isn't the first time these researchers have found interesting data in unlikely places. Four of the paper's six co-authors, including Clarkson and Halderman, helped develop what's known as the cold-boot attack, which showed how to get information out of a computer's memory, even after it has been turned off. This technique could be used to skirt some hard-drive encryption systems. With a well-preserved sheet of paper, the researchers say that their fingerprints are pretty close to 100 percent accurate. If the paper is soaked or marked up, things become trickier, but with error-correction software it's still easy to make a definitive ID, Clarkson said. "You have to significantly modify the document to make it become unidentifiable." The researchers believe their technique could be used to identify counterfeit money, tickets and even packaging containers. A drug company like Pfizer, for example, could take fingerprints of their labels when they are shipped, and this data could be verified later by a government or company representative in order to spot fakes. Using public key encryption, companies could even create "self-authenticating" packages that could be checked by special scanners. Art dealers could use the technique to fingerprint original works of art, they say. More troubling, however, the technique could be used to track anonymous surveys or to monitor voting done on paper ballots. Ballot tracking wouldn't be easy. Someone would have to scan the ballots before Election Day and then have a way of tracking the order in which these ballots were given out. Vote tracking is "the possibility that is most troubling to us," said Halderman, who has done extensive research into the security of computerized voting systems. This work shows some new problems with paper ballots too. "There are limitations and need for precautions that we might not have been aware of before," he said. quote> What do you think? Is it really possible? Should the vote tracking be allowed? I say no to the vote tracking, as voting is an anonymous process, besides, I think it would be too expensive to be feasible.

Inexpensive scanners can 'fingerprint' paper
Strategist01 replied to Strategist01's topic in Current Events
Well, first of all, firing someone that didn't vote the way you wanted them to vote is wrong, but it was the 19th century then, with exploitation of workers to maximise profits, and poor health, etc... But it would just be highly inefficient to scan votes...I mean, feel sorry for the poor sod who has to count the votes, (a) and (b) then have to scan each voting paper four times, then move on to the next one...keep in mind that placing the paper right, opening the lid, closing the lid, takes maybe 10 seconds in total, then repositioning it 3 more times, bring it up to 40 seconds per paper, not counting the scanning times, which would proabably bring the times up to 1 minute per vote...I don't even know how many votes a counter would have, but it would extend the counting process by a few weeks. What a waste of time. Originally posted by: JanYpeThat reminds me of this bit from a book on the 19th century I'm reading: "...landlords in local and national politics expected support at the polls. Where necessary, it was enforced by bribery or coercion... One German landlord distributed completed ballot papers to his peasants in sealed envelopes. A curious voter started to open his to see how he was voting, and received a smack on the head from the outraged bailiff: 'It's a secret ballot, you swine!'" quote> Good one! -

Well, I had the same timetable throughout the year, and it only changed every year...from grade 5 I got a time table. We had bells, and in primary school, we sat in the classrooms and waited for the teacher to get to us, now in high school we alk to each class room. Our timetables only change in the number of subjects in grade 10.....Well that was an overview of the schooling system in South Africa. Any questions? EDIT: Here's a link to my school, S.A.C.S -
I broke 500 000 population in a medium tile!!! YAY! (hopefully it will be 600 000, then 700 000, then 800 000, then 900 000 then 1 MILLION baby!) Maybe I should have zoned more residential...and less commercial.... But the commercial buildings are so interesting to look at! Hmm, you have a point there...I think I'll keep those nice 4x4 lots Don't forget those b-e-aaaautifull skyscrapers! Oooh! Sky scrapers! Where? Where? WHERE??? Tell me man! [/rambling]

Ok, that one was because I used the show posts by this member, and then it doesn't show the green buttons with the arrows pointing to the right...which is really annoying, especially if a thread has lots of pages... -
Ok well I didn't want this to turn into a joke thread, but...what the hell. Go ahead.

Your highest population on a medium city tile?
Strategist01 replied to Randomtaskk's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Just broke 300 000 (approx 320000) in a medium tile. I'll say this. Make a section of residential, preferably a block 31 tiles across and 27 down with a road diving each into 15 across, and into six segments down. Pattern this across your entire city. I'll maybe make a tutorial, but that's all i'm revealing right now...
