Confusion towards Plugins folder

Alrighty, thanks alot that clears alot up. -
So, I'm kind of a newb at downloading lots, excuse me if this is a stupid question but: If I download a lot, once I am finished extracting it etc., do I put the lot folder in the plugins folder or just the .dat file in the plugins folder? Thanks alot ahead of time.
