  1. NAM General Support

Thanks for all the responses. I'm in the process of doing a complete reinstall of SC4 and NAM looks to have installed properly this time - the compiler ran successfully on its own. Perhaps there was a conflict with a new plug-in after my last NAM install. I'll keep an eye on it if I change my NAM settings with a fresh install and try to narrow down what it could have been. So for now the case is unresolved but shelved...
  2. NAM General Support

I have no anti-virus software! The PC I play SC4 on is also used for audio editing so I don't ever connect it to the internet as I don't want things like anti-virus software hogging the processor. I totally understand your suggestion but that's why it is so odd! It had worked previously. I haven't uninstalled NAM by the way, just installed over the top. If I try uninstall first, this shouldn't affect anything, right?
  3. NAM General Support

Have got the newest version of java that is available - 64 bit to match my OS. It's a real head-scratcher as I haven't changed anything on my system since the last install of NAM.
  4. NAM General Support

Make sure you have the right version of Java. 64 bit for a x64 computer. That shouldn't be a problem as the compiler worked on this OS a month or so ago!
  5. NAM General Support

I've just reinstalled NAM 32. On my initial install, I ran the compiler manually as my java didn't seem to work and everything was fine. However, after trying to run it manually again, I'm getting an error: "The settings file does not exist. You have to reinstall the compiler." I've tried reinstalling NAM but still getting the error message. Any ideas?

Please note that this isn't what the article says! There is a difference between low wealth ($) and low density.
  7. Thanks for the replies! My commuter flow between cities is now looking pretty good. Can't keep them all doing what I want them to but I'm satisfied. One thing I have tried, that has worked well, is ending a road connection into the large CBD city with a parking garage or two and then using public transport to take them into the centre (along with the public transport links they already have). This means that I don't have to have such a maze of avenue underpasses to avoid commuters coming in from one city and straight out to another. It's giving a lot more control and hopefully this suggestion will help others too.
  8. I have a main CBD city of 250k residents and a much larger number of commercial jobs, and the residents of the neighbouring bedroom cities (ranging from 200k to 500k residents) commute in to work. Each of these cities has a few thousand jobs too but nowhere near enough to meet the demands of their residents - which is the aim to make the CBD city grow. Fairly standard region play. How do you arrange the transport links in these cities to discourage the CBD residents to stay in the central city and not attempt to leave to find work? I find this is the part of the game that offers the most creativity. In my current game, I have tried to deliver the CBD residents straight into the centre of the commercial zone before they can find available jobs, in the hope that this stops the CBD residents leaving. I try to deliver the neighbouring city commuters into the opposite end of the commercial zone - the reason for this is to try to limit the temptation that CBD residents living near that connection have to leave the city. So if the connection is on the south side of the city, the avenue would go round the commercial zone and enter it at the north side (avenue overpasses are perfect for this). This would hopefully stop any southside CBD residents to get a shortcut out of the city. The problem with this is when you have a large number of neighbouring cities; I don't want the CBD city to begin to look like a ringroad and it can become very confusing trying to eliminate shortcuts that spring up accidentally. I also utilise monorails into the CBD city, with the commuters then jumping on the subway into the centre - this is tricky to do without them using the road connection to find alternative routes into (and then straight out of) the city but means I don't have to demolish large parts of the CBD city to guide the sims into the right place. An idea I am about to try is to have a neighbouring city with no road link at all into the CBD city, just two or three monorail tracks, which might give more control. I try to guide them into different parts of the centre, not one terminal, so the workers should be spread out. Despite all this, I can still see sims on the road heading straight out of the city for work (there is little to be found) or others going straight across the middle without finding a job. Not many, admittedly, but enough to irritate me! So what are your strategies for keeping the sims where you want them in region play?
  9. NAM Traffic Simulators

Thanks for the replies on the puzzle pieces. I've now read some other interesting threads on it. I'd not had a problem before, but now I know what to avoid. And thanks for the excellent work on this simulator, by the way...it's had a noticeable effect on my larger cities!
  10. NAM Traffic Simulators

Since I've installed this simulator, I've had a problem with SC4 crashing. It seems to happen when I am putting in pedestrian mall tiles, in particular with the footbridge over rail. Anyone else experienced this? It could be connected with the January 08 NAM update instead, I installed them at the same time, and haven't done tests on them yet.
  11. NAM Traffic Simulators

So, if I'm following this RTMT part correctly...would it make good sense to keep the RTMTs off the main arteries of the city's transit? If I have streets leading from lots of smallish residential zones all onto the same road or avenue heading towards work zones, I should keep the RTMTs serving the residential zones on the streets? And the same set up at the commercial/industrial end of the trip? Interesting, if slightly baffling, stuff. I'm looking forward to trying this new simulator.
  12. University not appearing

Thanks N-O-BODY, I have used the cheat to get my university but can't toggle off again.I'm sorry to follow up my debut post with another obvious question but I'm a bit stumped. Do I just repeat the process? If so, that doesn't appear to be working for me.
  13. University not appearing

Sorry to revive this old thread, but I have a similar query. I had my university but I had to demolish it to fit in a highway. I was hoping I could just choose it again and place it somewhere else, but it is now permanently greyed out. I think I'm still in a good enough position to have one (does School Grade 95 refer to the education graph?). Do I have to hang on and hope to be lucky and get it offered to me again, or can I revive it in any way?
