Far from the city down south, in the jungles you'll find Aohi village

Aohi is said to be the birthplace of the Okataian National dress, the Shinpo featuring the national colours, gold and blue, the dress also features red, the royal colour. Lynda our tourguide has agreed to pose wearing it

Aohi village has a rather discreet architecture on the contrary to it's textile heritage

Okataian textiles developed under the influence of fabrics from Southeast Asia, China and mainland Japan. The rich variety and technique of Okataian textiles are beyond compare, even surpassing those of Japan and Teiko

You can still make yourself a dress here, Aohi was the village where the Imperial family got their cloths for ceremonial dresses

Oka is blessed with a variety of subtropical plants that can be used to dye textiles. Turmeric produces yellow pigment, and Japanese bayberry results in brown. And several different kinds of plant pigments are mixed to achieve a wide color range

The vilage is an Okataian Heritage site, and is looking to apply to AINESCO

It is the epitome of dyed Okataian work, is identified by its beautiful array of radiant colors, including vermilion, purple, indigo, yellow and green. It was used for royal attire and also for clothes worn by court entertainers. It is an important craft representing the Okataian culture.
The dress became this symbol especially after Japan annexed Oka in 1926 and banned it, the jungle revolts began against the japanese in 1936.
Men and women armed with only a gun wearing these clothes with pride would start a jungle guerilla until the iberation of Oka in 1946..
