- The Monastery of Sacre Mariae -

Founded in 1262 by the Cistercian Order, not least because of the impetus of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux (1190-1269). The vineyards of Sacre Mariae are among the oldest and best in the wine region of Bordeaux.

The monastery is located in a natural valley on the Eyre River. Surrounded by the vineyards. Near the castle of Mariae.

The Cistercians created in the centuries one of the best wines of the region; "Sacré Gouttelettes"..

The Romanesque cloister has been operated since 1960 under the auspices of the Prince Foundation like many historic places in Rondnoir, still ~ 90 monks lives in the monastery and manage the vineyards.
In the world wars, the monastery was used as a sanatorium for war victims. In 1948 began the reconstruction of the winery. A photo from 1948.
