Chapter 9: Land Ho!
“…ington! Captain Washington!” Hamilton Washington jerked awake with a snort as a young man ran into his cabin shouting his name. “What, what, what?” he mumbled, shakng off the shadow of sleep enveloping him.
“Sir, we’ve reached a suitable landing site. You told me to…” the man started.
“Alright, I’ll be topside in a minute,” Hamilton cut him off, and dismissed him. He put on his work boots, and made his way to the deck. As he walked, he thought about things. Like his name. Where had his parents seen the humor when they named him after a president and treasurer? They must have thought he would become one. However, he had never shown any interest in numbers or leadership, instead preferring to stay behind the scenes. He wasn’t one for stuff like that… But he did like the sea. That was weird even for him, as he’d come from Colorado, where there were no oceans nearby. But something kept tugging at him, and it didn’t stop until he had reached the sea. That was why he had accepted the job of exploring the waters around the continent of Lamona. Everyone else had argued that flying there would have been better, but in the end the committee in charge had chosen the one man who was willing to do it, and not complain about it, and Hamilton had been that man. Any thoughts Hamilton had been thinking were washed away when he reached the deck and looked over at the land he had been asked to claim in the name of the Commonwealth.

Virgin land, he thought to himself. As the ship stopped, and its anchor let down, there was a flurry of activity as supplies were gathered and smaller boats were readied to head to shore.

As the hours passed, sites were set up for construction of the port, so the ships could dock closer to land and housing, so the workers could live on land.

Before the construction could start, Hamilton had to make a call. He pulled out his cell and dialed the number he was given. A few rings later and President Kenneth Johnson was on the phone. “Mr. President, we’re all settled, now-” Hamilton began.
“Good, good, have you planted the flag yet?” The president asked.
“Not yet, sir, we have to get it off the ship first.”
“Very well.” The president seemed lost in thought, so long that Hamilton thought he was done. Just as he began to hang up, the president said, “Have you named the settlement yet?”
“Not yet, sir…”
“Washington has a nice ring to it….That’s your last name, right?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Well then have fun as the mayor of your namesake city.”
“But sir….”
All he heard was a dial tone. Standing there, the only thing he thought to do was to call his mother.
“Ma….You won’t believe what happened…”
