First off, this is my first attempt at a City Journal so please bear with me.

Secondly, my city has already been going for quite some time before this, so things are already quite developed.

*ahem*

The first city is my main city, San Francisco, and my first city. It is also the most successful city I have built to date, with 75,000 people. I'll just show a couple of different sections of this city that I like the most in this first introductory post.

hi_density.jpg

This is one of the high density areas of my city. I have a couple large residential buildings there - two low wealth, two medium wealth, and two high wealth. Getting the transportation network to function here was a pain - first I tried to make the road system work, with avenues and one way roads. Then I attempted to make a railway system into the neighboring dirty industrial city. Finally, I settled with a subway, which is working well in combination with the other options.

beach.jpg

A portion of my beach area is shown here - the medium density near the avenue fading to low density farther away to create less strain on the transportation network. Something I have been wondering is if the cemetery is a NIMBY or a YIMBY. However, it does not seem to have affected my development.

blue_tower.jpg

I like that blue tower in the middle there. I don't like that abandoned building in the top right though... recently I have experienced a mass exodus of Co

later learned that 6x6 blocks were the beast for transportation networks, but, there's no changing that now.quote>

6x6 transportation networks were "the beast?" sounds quite scary...

Anyway, not 100% impressed, especially considering your competition. But it is a start nonetheless. As I always do when I see people who look like they have an unmodded CJ, I will suggest you head over to the STEX and download some stuff. If you need a starting place, you can always ask me.

Also, consider that steep terrain is sort of unrealistic unless properly done. This is a good start for developing on hilly areas; although I remember it being geared towards steeper regions than yours, you could still apply some of the lessons on leveling next time.

Keep it up, though. I used to build cities like that until 6 months ago. Then I looked at other people's work and checked out the STEX and decided what I liked.

Well, like I said, I am a newbie to SimCity... and of course I don't expect to compete with the likes of Green Depra or Danapolis, or one of the truly amazing City Journals like those. As for the STEX, it would be much easier to find good buildings if there was a way to sort by rating, but I will take a look. Do I have steep enough terrain to require terracing?

Phew..I'd hate to take a train up some of those tracks! But, the city looks pretty good, given the terrain. I particulary like the last pic, with the 9x9 block - not sure why. And I admire the fact that you started a journal so soon after becoming a member of ST. But, I will tell you, to get some respect as a City Journalist around here, you'll have to download a good deal of stuff, and not just from the STEX. But you're new, so we'll give you time to discover all your options. Keep it up, anyway, looking forward to seeing more

I would say your city could get away with terracing in most hilly areas...my rule is if you see foundations level it off or use trees to hide it if its small

@ElBarto: Thanks! I'm currently selecting a bunch of stuff to download - the only things I have right now are the NAM, and the diagnol streets mod.

@salut221: It's too bad it's not as good as your City Journal, huh?

@jt: Thanks, I'll experiment with that.

Bahro - Yeah, it's gonna take a while to find all the good stuff on the STEX. Mainly, just figure out who the good BATters are, and look through their stuff. Eventually, you'll find some great obscure things on the STEX too. And like I said, make sure to visit other sites as well (some of the Japanese sites have really spectacular stuff). Good luck with the CJ and happy downloading!

Here's an industrial port I created using some downloaded files:

industrial.jpg It's in another city, north of the one shown above. The entire thing is powered by an offshore oil rig.

Again, a start.  You seem to be getting the idea about terracing.  Personally, I find the default rock boring, so look for a rock mod; Pegasus makes a good one.  Also, I find the default water boring; again, Pegasus makes a very good water mod.

Then, you are going to need some cement walls to give your terraced industry a more realistic look.  For a broader selection, simply put in wall in the search box in the STEX; These are my all-time favorites.  Only 4 lots, but they are very useful.

Finally, you need some trees.  A few days ago, I finally found Cycledogg's mod and I am amazed at it.  Because it's quite hard to find (it has a rather weird name in the STEX); I'll link to it; Here.  When you create walls, don't do the extremely steep areas (on the right side of your port; those would look great if there was a rock mod!)

I would like to see what you can do with those mods.

Like pickled_pig said, a rock and water mod are a must, and peg makes the best. I personally like his weathered granite rock mod and his brigantine water mod, but it's all up to you. Will keep watching..good luck

Anyway, new images of the harbor in Svalbard. The area around it has grown quite a bit, and it now supplies around 10,000 Industrial jobs. This city and the other industrial city have raised the total I jobs in TARNCitRoSF to 23,000.

pickled_pig > Thanks for those suggestions! The mods you linked to and the suggestions have made my city look much more realistic.

    Jason > Thanks!

ElBarto92 > Heh, what a coincidence. I downloaded the mods that you suggested before you made your post (ie, the same ones, weathered granite and brigantine).

That actually looks AMAZING!!! your progress has been so spectacular over just 2 days!!!!!!!! I think he deserves a round of applauses. *clap* *clap*. All I can say now is quit using railways and start using the bus services. Here's a good pack of different bus stops. Try the BRF Slope mod, I have it but I cant seem to find it anymore!!?!

wow you get the hang of it pretty quickly, I was just commenting that instead of using the defauly maxis on/off ramp for ground highway, you should use the NAME puzzle peices and make it so that its a bit more smoothed out, also try letting it go underground and let the overhanging road to be level and not go on an incline.

I agree with storms991; the NAM puzzle pieces are pretty useful. Not much to say besides your cities have vastly improved in the past 24 hours! Your suburbs look nice surrounded by Cycledogg's trees. What you might want to do now is experiment with the puzzle pieces combined with the hole digger mod to create interchanges while the highway remains below-ground.

Terraforming looks very nice (I like that cliff a lot!) and the suburbs are looking very, well, suburby. And although I've never been a big fan of PEG's streams and ponds, they look nice there. Add some trails, a ranger station or two, and some of PEG's MTP stuff, and you've got a bonafide national park there!

Thank you! Unfortunately, while working on the city, after having made a lot of improvements - using NAM puzzle pieces, etc - SimCity 4 crashed. Dang it. So, now I've got to do about an hours worth of work over again, which I am not in the mood for right now.
