I picked Italian because it is the basis of most European cuisines.  You need to remember that real "French" cuisine arrived in France from Italy with Maria di Medici's chef when she married the king of France.

Overall, I like most things, but good Florentine based cooking is one of my absolute favorites.

I live right next to the Polish district in Toronto.  I buy all my sausages there.  face-icon-small-happy.gif  Lucky!  I find that I like Polish sausages much more than any other type.

However, I voted for Mexican.  I especially prefer the Mexico City region's food.  When I was growing up, we had some family friends who were from Mexico City and they taught us how to cook lots of really ultra-yummy things!

    I voted Mexican.

Here in Texas its really mostly tex mex style, and ive never past the outside of Juarez before, so maybe im missing the best stuff?

whats Mexico City style like? what do they use that makes it different? What ive heard is that it goes easy on meat and refried beans compared to what we got up here. Now whats really funky is that comida prehispanica stuff. Fried Iguana.....

italian seems overated IMO,but maybe i just havent experienced really really good italian food before.

I chose Mexican cause it was the closest thing to Tex-Mex.  I've tried real Mex and didn't like it.  Tex Mex on the other hand...MMMMMM queso!

Italian comes in at a short second.

    BTW, if anyone's in Houston:

These are the the food types which i like and they are in order of preference.  I am a Strict Vegetarian so I cant eat no chicken, meat, eggs or fish.  Only fruits, veggies, and grains.

    I love Indian food ofcourse.

    indianfood5ew.jpg

Then second comes Italian food, expecailly Pizzas25.gif!!

    vegpizza4ir.gif

The third would be Chinese, Now there are 2 types of chinese foods in the world, one is Normal Chinese, which has a lot of fish, meat and rice and what not.  But Indian flavour of chinese food is diffrent.  It does not have any meat or fish or eggs or any thing like that.  The dishes are made from mostly rice, noodles, cottage cheeze etc.

    hakkafood18va.jpg

The Fourth reference is Mexican.  Yes we Indians are very fond of Spicy foods but again this is 100% vegetarian cooking i am talking about. so no meat here too,

I would have to say Vietnamese food.  I had a good friend growing up who's parents were from Vietnam.  They made some of the best food I have ever had!

My next favorite food is seafood.  I could live off of seafood!

You've got that right, hamsterTK! 16.gif

Although I voted for North/South American food, that is mainly the samething as Mexican food. Just 30 mins ago, I went to a resturant called 'Mamasitas' which has fabulous Mexican food. I remember when I traveled to Paris, France once... they had Tex-Mex there too!!!!

    I just couldn't believe it!

Houston has a bunch of places to get tex mex...

I remember eating at this place on some road off the southwest freeway right inside the beltway. I forgot what it was called but it was really good. Then there was this place on Chimney Rock... I cant ever remember names of restaraunts when i go eat with my family.

There is a place in San Marcos called Garcia's that i go to whenever i go there and its darn good.

    EDIT:said something silly

     Great thread, tough question.

OK, All American comfort foods - home made. (you can read that "All" either way)

Americans (like Canadians) come from everywhere, sort of a no-holds-barred thing.

Home made because it is better. I have been to many of the local restaurants and

only know of a couple that impress me. None know how to make a great salad,

most menus are a sort of paint by number thingy to make it easy for the cook staff

and taste that way and prices are off the wall.

I make a home made peppermint stick ice cream that you can't put down.

Just made a beef stew (filled my 8 quart stock pot) that had potatoes, carrots, parsnips, green beans, mushrooms, pearl onions, peas, a little corn for color, plenty of beef, about 2 cups of burgundy, thyme, oregano and about half a dozen other ingredients. Let the flavor mingle overnight and served it tonight with home made dumplings - fantastic!

The other night I made a salad of green leaf lettuce, some very thin sliced onion, very thin sliced carrot, a thinly sliced radish, crumbled Gorgonzola cheese, crumbled bacon and a Fig infused vinegar-et dressing - killer. I almost always use the same base for a salad, green leaf lettuce, some very thin sliced onion, very thin sliced carrot, a thinly sliced radish, crumbled Gorgonzola cheese as above and vary the toppings and dressings. How about my base salad but with slices of fresh strawberries and a Balsamic vinegar-et or canned pear (sliced) with a pear infused vinegar-et, easy.

How about a slice of home made shredded wheat bread (loaded with shredded wheat and molasses - has a great nutty sweet flavor) toasted with a poached egg on top. Make that 2 and you can shovel 3 feet of snow from the driveway in no time.

I could go on for ever and ever and ever.

I go down to my moms and cook dinner every night (we're both live alone, she's 89) and we eat better at home then if we went out.

How about a broiled ham steak with a sauce made from apricot jam, a little water, a splash of brandy, a spoon of Dijon mustard, a hand full of raisins, a little butter, and just a pinch of ground cloves, simmer till reduced by half. Great.

Or a variation, pan fry thick pork chops till golden and finish in 350 degree oven, for sauce pour grease out of fry pan, add a little water, a big spoon full of strawberry jam, a glug of port, spoon full of Dijon mustard, simmer to reduce by half and at near the end add a couple hand fulls of fresh sliced strawberries, easy.

Have a good night all, and a better weekend.

I didn't see the list until after my screen refreshed after the post. . . . .never mind.

Although I like Japanese food, I'd have to say Italian. The reason: I've been eating Japanese food ever since I was born. It gets a bit tiring.

Are there any places in Houston where you can honestly get real Mexican food?  My good friend's (Mexican) mom makes some hardcore Mexican dishes and they seem so different from all the restaraunt's food.

defcon: Japanese food scares me.  I think I've seen too many of those shows where some guy goes into that district in Tokyo (can't remember the Japanese name but I do remember it translates to "morning erection") and eats all this cRaZy stuff.  I think the grosest thing I remember was the guy eating a frog's heart that was still beating and bloody.  Eww!  14.gif

But he did say it was supposed to "increase stamina". 19.gif

I said Italian, but I also love Mexican (the Americanized stuff; Mexicans would die if they ate our Mexican food).  I like most major food categories, as long as it isn't Asian (nothing against Asian food, I've just never really tried it much).

    I LOVE fast food.

evryone tells me that i "eat like a person on welfare", because all the suburban eltists that surround me in this town only eat expensive CRAP like PF Changs and expensive Manhattan bistros.

I know it hurts my health, but its quick, cheap and its GOOD!

Well, what am I supposed to do?  Fly to Warsaw or Krakow everytime I need to pick up some sausages?  Sheesh.  3.gif

At least it's made by Polish people here.  Gotta count for something.

Japanese food is quite high on my list.  I have come up with many of my own recipies for some sauces.  My Japanese fiancee says I cook better than his mother.  1.gif
