Let's go Surfin' Now...

Hey, cool. You are following a thread of associations, much like the free associations in your mind that occur when you daydream. You are engaging in a creative, non-logical, non-linear thought process. You are participating in a group consciousness through an electronically replicated version of mental operations in their purest state. And you thought you were just goofin'. Shame on you!

That's right... 42 is the Meaning of Life. Wow, thanks for reminding me about that...

After giving it some thought, I've reached the conclusion that the meaning of life is to reproduce before you get killed. 3.gif

Wow, that was actually a good method they used to go about answering the question. I s'pose it is rather ambiguous, isn't it?

It took me a while to think of who said that, but then when I thought of someone giving out chocolate, I automatically came to Gump.

Aside from that I originally thought most of it was made up of 42 and that box of chocolates... What a shame...

I've thought for some time before posting this message and I completely realize I might be opening myself up for ridicule or derision. Nonetheless, the question was posed and I thought I'd venture a serious answer.

Many of you don't know me -- the private me; the me that only the very inner circle of my friends and family know. I am person who has a very strong inner core of beliefs and morals. That doesn't mean that I am an inflexible person. Quite the contrary, I love a good debate and believe that free speech allows for a most important exchange of ideas between people and cultures. Nonetheless, my inner core remains solid and unchanged against the flow of society on its outer shell.

I don't get on my soapbox very often as I try to be more of a quiet, private person. However, if a person does consider himself to be a Christian, having been born again in Christ, then I do believe that Dev pretty much hit the nail on the head. I, myself, count myself as a "slave to Christ" as vidioman suggests.

I am fully aware that answering the (serious) meaning of life question would result in a wide variety of answers, I would assume, based on the ethnic and moral background of the individual answering. I won't site examples as I don't want to either offend anyone exampled or left out as an example. I trust the reading audience can think of their own examples.

Having had the opportunity of living a few years and, having been around the block a few times (horrible metaphors, I know), I can tell you that living in the world can be a challenge. Can I honestly say that I didn't enjoy doing the "things of this world"? No, I cannot. However, with eyes of hindsight, I can say that fun though they may have been, they were misdirected and wrong.

One of the biggest things I regret (now that I'm older) is that I'll never have the opportunity to right so many wrongs committed; apologize to people who are now gone; take advantage of opportunities instead of squandering them; etc., etc.

As a Christian, I know that my past has been covered by the Blood of Christ and that my sins have been forgiven. But, just as Paul had trouble, I, too, have trouble keeping the old man buried and keeping the new man in Christ walking the straight and narrow path. Nonetheless, with the strength given to me by Christ and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, I walk in grace daily. Do I ever fall? Yes, I do. Do I stay down? No, as Christ lifts me up and helps get me back on the path.

Yes, there are boundaries within which I live. Do I find them to be binding? Not at all -- quite the contrary, they define my life and give it the structure I need to be a contributing part of society.

Okay, I believe I've philosophized enough. Oh, and if you thought I was witnessing, maybe I was. Maybe I was just answering the question posed in this thread as it applies to me.

I would never go so far as to state that no other opinion that goes counter to the Christian culture can EVER be stated, written or otherwise put forward. I am a firm believer in the First Amendment and would defend the right of anyone to freely state their beliefs. I don't have to agree with them but I will defend your right to air them.

I trust that y'all will have a great day and you will attempt to take what I've written as a serious attempt to answer the question posed in this thread and not as a frivolous off-the-cuff remark.

    Regards,

    Vandy

Wow Vandy, that was deep. Mistakes are mistakes and their purpose is to learn from them.

I don't feel very good about what I'm about to say because I don't know how everyone else is going to feel about this, so here it goes...

I'm not Christian so please correct me on any of this if I am wrong.

God made us, put us on this Earth to what you have said, worship him. So making us just so we can worship him sounds odd. Does he get some type of sensation when we worship him. As Christians view it, we have one life so our job is to worship God. There just seems to be more to life than worshiping him.

I view the meaning of life is to worship life itself. Appreciate life and at the same time be happy.

    The meaning of life?

I suppose there is no 100% correct answer. Depends on how you see it.

    Amen, Vandy! Amen.

Energy Monkey: The simplest Judeo Christian explanation is:

Fear God and Keep His Commandments. For this is the fullness of Man.

(end of Ecclesiastes; some translations say 'full duty of man' but I think 'wholeness or fullness of man is better.)

So, if we follow the logical paths, we come to the same conclusion as Vandy-- since we are to Fear God and keep His commandments, and he commands us to Worship him, it is what we should do. Dang, we shouldn't just do it, we need to WANT to do it-- If we love God so much, then it is our desire to worship him. We don't just HAVE to, we WANT to. Man... I feel like going and playing some songs now... What... a Freind we have in Jesus....

Also, we might be a 'slave' to God-- but through it we become free. Think of things like addictions and afflictions as chains that hold you; God can tear all of those chains away. Its not about getting in some machine, or getting dowsed with holy water; its a process that comes from within, God directed and inspired; we call it 'Sanctification'.

Read the Psalms if you ever get the time... they are great for speaking truth into your life.

If you believe that the Bible is totally subject to anyone's interpretation, and thus Christians do not hold the Truth, then I have no quarrel with you; you have made your decision on the matter; it is between you and God.

Why does life have to have a specific meaning, anyway? What I like about that link is that it simply points out that a desire to 'know the meaning of life' is usually directed by emotional need. Or, to be more precise, spiritual need.

    Jesus loves you, y'all. Ciao!

No offense, but if we all used logic, I think we'd all come to the conclusion that there is no God. (I think I said that in chat once...) However, other than that, you are right in many ways. Just take out all the "sanctified" parts, and you'd have something pretty close. 2.gif

Life is connected with everything. When we worship someone separate from us we are looking for that someone to better ourselves. Why don't we look at ourselves to better ourselves? As Christians view it God is a separate entity from us so why should we worship him?
