Howdy everyone. Anyone have any screenshots or guides to getting these to work? I'd love to see. Also, what files do I need from STEX?

The easiest way to see a ped mall in action is this.

(I'm assuming at this point you've gotten/installed the NAM.)

Build Residential and Commercial back to back, but leave one space between the zones. Place ped mall tiles in that area. When they both develop, Residents will be using the ped malls to walk to work!

You could also use it to make shorter routes to bus stops, subway stations, etc. But remember that sims don't like to walk more than 8 (I believe is the number) squares (128 m) to get somewhere on foot. Feel free to mess around with em to see if you can get some interesting effects. You might want to see the 'roadless city with NAM' thread; it shows some usage of ped malls.

Ciao!

Well I know it is an old topic but I have some excellent screen shots of ped malls in action from my CJ, Newtopia Valley:

All of these shots are of Posieden's Reef in Rive Creek, the largest Pedestrian Mall in SimNation.  The only way to get on the island is by pedestrian ferry or subway.  only special vehicles used for the transport of goods or the construction of new buildings are allowed on the island.  Pedestrians can rent small electric cars (golf carts) to get around easier but those are mostly for the elderly or people who work on the island.

For more shots of Posieden's Reef Visit my CJ (see sig below).  hope these shots help others learn about the power of pedestrian mall tiles and inspire them to use all the tools they have in new and creative ways.  Good luck.

I guess the key to having working ped-malls like in the pics above are because of proper subway station placement? Those aren't transit enabled plazas? Is it a maximum of 8 or 16 tiles (meaning both directions)? I have some screenshots of my sim commuters walking 42 tiles from one city to the next laying around I should post. Very cool waterfalls! btw

Ped Mall Tiles are special pieces that are only available if you have the NAM installed. They are like roads but only pedestrians can walk on them. To allow peds to access the Ped Mall Tiles, you need to have a Mass Transit station of some sort. MT stations can be bus stops, subway stations, train stations, monorail stations, elevated rail/GLR stations, or ferry terminals.

Thanks Gnargenox. Yes I have lots of subway stations positioned strategecally around the isand. and as swamper77 said, those are special tiles called Pedestrian Mall Tiles which come with the NAM. They allow only pedestrian traffic and only allow commercial (and I think industrial) to grow next to them. you still need to have a road, street or avenue for residential though.

Well, lad, if you enlarge my sig you'll see a Ped Mall with a GLR running through it.  I have found them very handy as transporation transions.  For example, if you want to get from regular rail to monorail, you can put the stations along the edges of a ped mall.  Works like gang busters.

Excellent Idea N_O_Body, I had not thought to do that. I am always looking for ways to make mass transit more efficient and eye pleasing.

Thanks tchaos713, Posiedens Reef started as an experiment and became quite a unique fixture in my CJ. I look forward to any comments you may have.

@soldyne: I had posted  a set of transit stations for ped-mall tiles on the STEX, subways and underground parking garages, that use the same textures as the ped-mall tiles, so they look better integrated. The parking garages are really handy, as they provide car access to the pedestrian zones; sims park there and walk to their workplaces. Actually this is the only case parking garages working like in reality. The problem is that the parking props aren't particularly beautiful, they were made for another lot and I just used them in mine as I wasn't proficient with BAT. But now that I can BAT, I'm considering releasing an additional set of props (parking & subways), probably brutalist style with marble or granite textures.

Excellent work on those pedmalls and NAM ! This changed my city layout completely 9.gif

I only miss two other types.

A monorail over Pedmall (like the light rail over pedmall) and an grass pedmall with some trees/park. I think this is really missing in NAM. Any chance this get added to NAM sometime ?
