About the Graphic Rules.sgr: Open it with an editor, search for this entry: "property noPartialBackingStoreCopies true" and change the "true" into "false". (without quotation marks!).

Hope, this will help.quote>

In addition to the above, I also set the priority to "High" as suggested by cameron1991. I have had one crash since doing all this, which was during a "save" and it crashed to the desktop. It must have something to do with the dual core processors because the game ran fine (if a bit slow) on my older machine with had a third the speed, half the ram and a forth the video speed of my new machine.

I appreciate all the work you all have done as it has helped some. Hopefully we will eventually come up with a total fix for the problem.

Ps. How do you set the Virtual Memory"

Thanks!

OMG, my game is crashing as well. I don't know if it's a zoom issue or a plugins issue. Ahh this is sooo annoying! It's like, I'll place anything in a certain part in a city and BAM, shut down!

I've found a solution to avoid crashes while zooming in or out that works well for me. I have an Intel Core 2 Duo, 1.86 GHz, 2 GB RAM.

Before starting SimCity, I turn off antivirus, internet connection, and some applications like GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe, iTunesHelper.exe, AcroTray.exe and iPodService.exe using the Windows Task Menu (Processes Tab). (I guess if you have anything else that is not necessary while playing SimCity could be turned off too).

Then, I do the following:

1 - Save the game

2 - Go to the utilities menu and choose pipes

3 - When in the underground view, zoom in or out

4 - Save the game again before any other action

The above steps seem to work setting the game up or not to run in one processor only. It is not bullet-proof, but most of the time it works.

My guess is that the underground level requires less memory to upgrade the graphics right after zooming. Hence, it decreases the chances of crashing to the desktop.

Hope this helps some of you.

Here's what finally has solved 99% of my crashing problem: Open the Task Manager/select the processes tab/right click on the SimCity entry/set the priority to High/right click again and select "affinity" and deselect one of the cores. This has really helped. Good luck. Dick

Oh thanks... but is the task manager the windows that comes up when you press Control Alt Delete? Ill give that a try. I have Windows Vista... so...

By doing what you suggested, what does it do to the game to fix it?

In regards to zoom crash, since I used Cleanitol and Dat Packer obtained at SC4Devotion, I have absolutely no crashes related to zoom. The only crashes I have had are traced to texture problems. The use of the above utilities also reduces loading time for the game and cities noticably . Both are easy to use and understand.

Technically I don't know what it does. But part of the problem seems to be the dual core porccessor which SimCity does not like. I am running Windows XP so I don't know what Vista does with the game. Dick

Nice tip! I'll have to try this. My game crashes 90% of the time when I zoom out now. I'm used to restarting every 10 minutes at this point.

I just wanted to go back to this subject and say that it is a surefire way to stop the zoom crash issue! I was totally amazed at Dat Packer - once I ran it, it compressed all of the dats into a handful of files and not only does the game load in under 30 seconds, but you can zoom in and out as much as you want and never have a game crash again.

Highly recommended!!

Worked for me.... 6 hours playing time without a crash! I was about to give up on SC4, thinking it was a Vista bug. Thanks rewright for your deductive skills in solving this FRUSTRATING issue for me.

My computer crashes automatically while scrolling or zooming through a city-how can I fix this?

I can open a city but can't play it-because of the above.

I have no plugins installed.

aafuss:  What kind of computer are you using? Have you recently changed? The crash-while-scrolling issue has had several things suggested for a fix. I, myself, found that disabling my system's hyperthreading capability solved the problem for me. Also, setting the priority of the game to a higher level through Task Manager helped some (but not totally). Good luck.

The othere thing that crashes do is cause deframentation at every crash. So diffentily defrag. I have also noticed that after I have data packed it a good thing to defrag. Since I play alot and dowload alot I will sometimes even defrag a number of times. It may be too much but my simcity plays great and with no more desk crashes. I think that data packer really solved the crash issue for me.

Has anyone considered that these crashes may be driver related? I recently started playing SC4 again after not playing for around a year, and I never used to experience any crashing problems. During that time I've also built a new computer, but even then I'm still running on a single core. This leads me to believe that either there is an issue with the newer versions of the DirectX graphics drivers, or that a very common download such as the NAM is causing the problems(though there is nothing to lead me to believe that the NAM is the issue, its just an example of a download that most people would have). I'm going to test out the drivers to see if I can isolate the problem.

As zzsim said, maybe the NAM is the problem, for me, I am sure that the crashes cause the NAM must have tool. Yes, I said must have because I can't play without it. Without it the game runs normal i have one map with 500K sims, but with NAM i have crash problems. I will keep using the NAM because I LEARNED to "not get mad by CTD"

I have only crashes when I zoom out, subway tubing (undergroud CTD) and GLR placeing. Rarely I have save problem, BUT, from this I can recover.

My computer: P4HT-2,8/1GB-RAM/MSI Neo2/MSI 6600GTS/Win2000 orig.

ALL my saving problem is that it still saves and the only thibnk to stop this is to make CTRL-ALT-DEL.....and cancel the application. BUT, after quiting to manager I give it a few time to sort processes and than i click back on simcity as i would like to pop it up back, after few blinking screens of region (yes, i dont why there are region map while i am going back to game from manager) the game get back and voila, save was succesfull tab appear. This was my last saving crash....CAUTION, this procedure takes me about 5 minutes, but i don't lose my save!

Another crashes are the ones mentioned here by Barbyw and others, and my solution to "not get mad by CTD" is patience, not so much quick zooming, scrolling and so one.

I have region of 5MIO sims, 20cities, 3GB Plugin folder....

Also, when I SUFFER from a crash i restart my PC and my simcity keeps runing for 2-3 hours without crash. Than i reboot again and again.....

You know, my bugfight is in patience and I must say that i'm winning because a have: "More beer cans in trash, than simcity crash" and this is fine, not perfect, but it works.
