Yep, thats exactly what I mean. The clouds (or heavy reflections in general) make the building look ugly.

Back on Topic: It sounds like you have a very good plan, and I think this will turn out to be one of the greatest buildings on Simtropolis. Take your time, you don't have to rush. Now it looks like I am going to have to invent a realistic reason to include this into my city journal.

Wow... this is very ambitious. I wish they would make it obvious what the final building is going to look like, but everyone knows why they don't want to make the final plans public (competition for WTB status).

The actual building is going to be very narrow, and there is some question what the highest usable floor will be... it looks as if the top floors are too small for even apartments. Accordingly, I do not know how well pools and living spaces are going to fit as roof junk. Honestly, I think it will look better that way, but it may not be too realistic (WIND!).

I've waited patiently for tons of projects (and am waiting) so I certainly wouldn't rush you. Thanks for the great contribution to the community!

Well Mayor Tim, this is nice to hear :-)

@ZeramZeram: Good point with the highest useable floor. In official model pictures it's obvious that the last floors rise very very high to almost the end of the tower and that the space inside cannot be very big, maybe a big room for an office. Probably the residences special people, maybe the architect, rich people etc. In my vision there will be special people alowed to use the highest floor, and special means people who have contributed for the benefit of all, not just rich moneymakers. People who deserve honor, like the architect.
And you are welcome. I love to serve with good work :-)

Here is a little visual update. I didn't get the reflection effect as I wanted. Actually it doesn't look like reflections at all. But still I like it! You also see the open piece in this pic, note that I will add more details at the top and base of the piece. I don't want it to just start after a regular piece, doesn't look so realistic.

Yeah, I propose that you have parks, pools, or whatever else you want on the roof till maybe the 60th floor or so. Then I think it would look better with normal roof junk. Maybe one of the top floors could be used as an obervation point?

This thing is turning out great!  I can't wait until you find the correct texture.  I wonder how long the rendering would take?  I was thinking about rendering it pieces, so it wouldn't be as hectic, but it's your choice1.gif

Here's another update, the announced detailing for the open piece. Imagine interior behind the glas, plants, tress, sitting areas and you get a picture what it will look like. The texture is final. I will have the roofs with life upt to the top, I know the wind is high up there, but I will add wind protection glas walls. Maybe at one point I will add roofjunk, vents, so the Sims will get fresh air inside :-)

I also wanna share something funny, a size comparison between Burj and my One21-Apartment Tower. Download the tower at the link in my signature.

    It's definitely BIG, hugh?

Holy hell that most recent section makes me exciteed... very nice indeed. Actually, that comparison is pretty useful - when I see the building, even in the nice pictures of the (proposed) downtown, the building doesn't look too massive to me. But up against the smaller building it looks great!

@2ch: What do you mean with cross section?

I've been working on the roof wind protection wall, here it is:
    Roof-Wind-Wall.jpg

I will now work on another floor of detail for the roof base parts. I will inlcude vents in the sides so there is function without really disturbing the design.

Looks great! I can't imagine how beautiful it will look once there are trees and stuff inside those see-through windows. Thw wind protection looks good as well, and really works with the design.

Well, thanks for your comments :-) Guys, you have to see this: I did a quick wall test with just the bland regular pieces without any details, roofs, open pieces etc. I took the side (about 4/5 of the whole height) without all the top section wich is another fifth of height. It looks soooo tall, is that even too tall? I mean Burj will be 800 meters, that almost double high than current hightest buildings... It looks so big...

    Here's the pic:

I really really like the textures. This is shaping up to be the most downloaded thing on Simtropolis. You are a awesome modeler. Great Work !

This building will definitely stand out in your city with that size.I think you shouldn't change the height of it since it is in position for WTB.

I will definitely download this when complete.

By the way, is the general colour of the building blue or orange? In some pics, I see blue Burj Dubai and on other pics, I see orange Burj.  I am getting kind of worried...

I would keep it blue, since it looks more modern that way and will fit into SC4 more.

Ok.I saw those pics from google and orange doesn't look bad but I definitely prefer blue because your building looks great in blue and it will adapt better in game as MayorTim said.

The blue would look better on something will those type of glass textures. The orange would look ugly and everyone seems to like the blue, but it's your BAT so you choose. 1.gif

I think the orange comes from the reflection of the sunset, not the glass color. Notice how all the pics with orange glass are taken during a dramatic sunset. awsome job dude. Very Nice!40.gif

Yes I have made new progress. I've been working on the 2 Section of the side wings. I changed my mind and decided to do them accurately. In fact in the real model the sidewing sections are not the same each. They get a bit broader and the edge gets rounder each time. I found that out a few days ago and thought about it. I figured that I would have 4times more work for the sidewings if I would decide to realize that in my model too. First I dropped it and thought it would be ok since it's not that significant. But then I thought how great it would be to have it accurate and also when I was browsing through pics of the real Burj I saw that it actually does make a difference in the end.

So I've been remodeling all the outer shapes to fit for the 2nd section, which was nerve-destroying in times and not the most pleasant part, to say it in nice words. My only concern is that the difference between Sect. 1 + 2 is to significant, Sec.2 looks more like Sec 3 at the edge. Now I have to remodel the parts so that former Sect 2 gets broader at the sides to fit Sec 3 and then model new sect. 2 pieces.  After that I need to model Section 4 and a little Section 0, which is a small unit at the base of each wing. Then I need to model the first inner shape which rises from the bottom to almost the top of the tower. If I have that highrising will start!! That process will take more time than you would think and it will be a lot of work and also patience be needed. For the picture below, on which I just put some pieces together (you can see the different Section 1 and 2), the BAT slowed down already pretty much and I had to wait for each move I made.

I also wanted to mention that since final design of the Burj Dubai is not yet known I do not claim to built an 100% accurate model. At this time it is not possible to tell i.e. how the windows or other details will look like. Therefor I need to creat my own version, which you see here.  Besides that I take the freedom to add more function to the building than it will have in real. Read my post earlier in this thread for an idea what that might look like.

Maxis used to scale down the bigger buildings a bit and scale up the smaller ones. if you dont want it to be to huge, scale it down a bit when it's all finished. you could pass from a 20x20 tiles to 17x17.

    youre doing an awesome job.

It would be really cool to see what that old model with no detail or anything would look like in the game, just as a size comparison. Do you think you could do that?
