Wow Ellie, those pictures are fantastic. You look like awesome people 3.gif and those leaves! Wow..not as coloured as ours, but certainly more of them.

A few weeks ago my school joined in on a Model UN Conference. I decided to go (why!?!?), and my team of three decided to pick the country of Burma to represent. Needless to say, because we were Burma, the entire room hated us (all 40odd countries present), and we were ignored on many occasions and basically got nothing we wanted through! 3.gif

As you can see here, our team looking exceptionally bored. I was staring at my draft resolution and scratching my head - probably thinking "Oh why..why did I choose to go with Burma"..

We did manage to have one debating negotiation session with Japan. However, it turned into a shouting match and a "My country is better than yours!" argument. Gestating wildly with my hands here.

"Draft Resolution Proposal....Nuke the UN Building..Nuke the USA...Nuke Europe..Nuke Japan. Especially Japan." And yes; our country-card was in Welsh.

And finally, a few hours ago, I had a haircut! You can hardly see any difference in it at all. 3.gif

"Welsh are damn sexy, so stop even trying" U.N Resolution?

You were so preoccupied with Nukes, you forgot about the love 15.gif

I honestly never understood the purpose of things like Model UN, Mock Trial, and whatnot. No matter what happens, nothing gets accomplished since it's all fake, anyway. Seems to me to be just a somewhat more sophisticated way of playing pretend. Fundamentally, it's no different than having a tea party with your dolls.

Besides, criminal trials of adults are usually open to spectators, so if you're interested you can go and watch real ones. And there's all those "Judge ___" TV Shows, too. Those are real people arguing real issues and getting real results. And for the Model UN people, C-Span. You can watch all the governement proceedings you want there. Sure, you're not participating, but it's real.

And it's not like your mock-ups can compare to the real thing, anyway, since your classmates are not professional lawyers, prosecutors, judges, diplomats, or politicians. Though they might sometimes actually do a better job than the professionals.3.gif

Hey Sparky, actually doing things always wins out over playing a spectator when it comes to learning about a process. Seriously, watching C-Span is supposed to teach you just as much as a "tea party" about the fundamentals, the problems you'll encounter or the mistakes that get made? Here's an idea; you get to watch a couple of hours of bootcamp footage, then we drop you in a warzone. I'm sure you'll make it through alive without a hitch, after all: you've watched the real thing. 19.gif

Bad comparison, there. Boot Camp is official training by the Army for the Army. The things I mentioned are unofficial and thus are little more than just playing pretend. If your local court decided to hold mock trial sessions for prospective lawyers and whatnot that would be completely different, because now it's official and although it's still not real it's a proper organized imitation and not just a bunch of amateurs getting together to play games.

Of course, this is just how I look at things. Don't let that stop you from going and partaking in them if you actually want to- just be aware of the criticisms involved.

Debating is a skill that has to be learned. The most effective way of learning and remembering is by doing. Model UN/Mock Trials provide a scene for which to use said skills. Tadaa! 3.gif

It has come to our attention that there was something lurking behind my head on the last picture I posted.

Using terribly advanced cleanup operators and image enhancement tools (on loan from the US Govt.), we have managed to enlarge and sharpen the thing circled by the red circle.

Oh good god. What is it?

(and here is another one for good measure:
