Hello everyone!

Long time lurker here.  I'm working on a new city and I made a highway with collector lanes with it... was wondering what you guys thought about what I did, and do you think it is overkill?

Thanks for the replies.

I can't ever see those roads being used to capacity, to be honest. I thinks it's major overkill.

My opinion: get rid of the lights, and search Google maps to find a big highway, and try to build it like that. May I suggest searching for highway 401 in Toronto Canada... Its a very big city, so naturally it has a very big highway.48.gif

I am jumping on the overkill bandwagon. I think you should seriously get rid of half the lights you've placed.

even with sunglasses on, you would still crash at mid-night with all thoes lights blinding you.

A bit much - the lights should be used a helluvalot more sparsley, and all those roads in one place seem useless.

I am not a real fan of the lights, cause Maxis will automatically generate them. I like some of the design, but I can predict that no sims will use the highway because there are two avenues right there and have greater accessability. Generally when I make highways I make a point to have perhaps 3 merging points at most near the hub of activity where traffic will most like convene. So basically 3 connection onto highway at begining and 3 at the end.

The design is not bad though for every connection I would take one out -- and -- perhaps limit some of the lengths of the avanues so that there is more reason to actually use the highway. I can see huge commercial skyscrapers surrounding this route.

Also: You will need to make avenues or roads that will create crosstown traffic, I can see Maxis trying to figure out a route here and have a car go all the way down the end before turning around to get to the otherside. You will need to make maybe bridges or overpasses perpendicular to the highway.

    I love coffee and buildings.

Overall I think that is a nice looking design for a highway but I would get rid of a few of those lights so it looks better. Good effort thougth! 44.gif

Cut the amount of lights down by 75% and it would look much better...and I think as long as there is a LOT of traffic running through it, it will be fine...otherwise, it's big overkill. But it does look cool...3.gif

LOL! that is serious overkill! but a very good job 2.gifI'm impressed...just to keep in mind...the smaller tower lights have about 3x3 radius of light....while the bigger ones have 4x4 to 5x5...so keep that in mind and it'll look better...now with all the mergers...well...thats alot too...you can cut down on those...by about %20

If I drove my Renault Megane through that at night, the automatic lights would turn off as soon as I hit the first light! 17.gif17.gif

yep, way to much lights. cut the amount fo them to lets say 25% of the current, so lets answer your question with: yes, this is lighting overkill! 18.gif

The overkill bandwagon wins for sure.  Empressive design but too many mergers and too many lights.  I also think that the avenues on the sides will get more traffic than the highway.  But what do any of us really know?  Try it and see what gets used and what doesn't, then eliminate the mergers that aren't being used.  But first, cut the lights in half, or more.10.gif

Ok everyone.  I appreciate your comments and have made some changes to my design.  Please let me know what you think of it.

    Thanks

With the improvements you have certainly gone from total overkill to major overkill.

Great that you got the lights of, not just for the enviroment, I was more afraid of people lying around on the lanes to get a tan..22.gif

I still think the too many connections is a problem for the functionality (and reality).

Otherwise ... impressive! It must have taken a while....

    Keep it up...

There are still some problems such as the lack of overpasses and you should also flatten the ground below the highway before you place it. It looks a bit bumpy..

That looks a lot better now althougth I think it would be better still if you got rid of those two smaller highways either side of the main one to make the layout more effishient.

That looks... better. probably you should get rid of the avenue or the smaller highway(by the way, where did you get the small highways?)

But yah, that is slightly overkill - change the avenues into roads, and it will look much better and less bulky.
