@vid: No, I live in Grey-Bruce riding. If Helena were appointed minister of northern affairs she would be right at home, even though we aren't really in Northern Ontario. The idea of having a junior MP in charge of such a portfolio scares the stuffing out of me, because if would be Lew MacKenzie. I think Lew would be better at DND. He is one of the few people I know of who could clean out NDHQ and give the operation back to the guys who get shot at. Just because you don't like Stevens gliberal photo-op means you are being taken in already by their dirty tactics. Wake up! If we put the gliberals in again, we'll never forgive ourselves and you can kiss Quebec good-bye. ZMV: how do you say that in French when you don't mean au revoir?

So, vote conservative to keep Quebec? Almost every conservative I know doesnt give a crap about Quebec. I don't see how they'll help the situtaion.

Maybe I'll vote green after all... He got, like, 12 votes last year! Maybe 13 will be lucky for him?

Sorry,

just after reading Truckin_Papa's message, I wasn't in a mood to finish my post. MsD is one of my favorite here even if we had mismatched perspectives about Quebec province. As the official Moose Factory chair warmer, I'll take care of her place here with the most extreme care. I wish she'll be back with us as soon as possible.

Back into usual topics...

Welcome to p.68

vidioman & N_O_Body
If we put the gliberals in again, we'll never forgive ourselves and you can kiss Quebec good-bye.  ZMV:  how do you say that in French when you don't mean au revoir?
Well, I think that I'm not understanding the statement at 100%. What I understand N_O_Body is that you mean that voting gliberals is a step toward the independence of Quebec. That's what I understand from kiss them goodbye. Au revoir might be a proper translation of goodbye in this context. However au revoir is very close of see you later (revoir; re=repetition suffix, voir=see). Adieu is definitive and fits better here despite that it sounds a little too dramatic.

Regarding political analysis, I thinks that vidioman perspective is colorful but quite accurate. Historically, our province is one of the most to the left in Canada. I don't think that I need strong arguments to convice you of that. I'll just say that a lot of social programs began here and then spread to other provinces. And the PQ just elected a gay as their chief... Conservative is the party with the farthest position to the right.

Conservative vote in Quebec in the last election has been really small. A fact is that despite tremendous efforts to be associate with the old and popular PC of another era (they even took the name...), the conservatives are more perceived like the Reform Party Under a New Name (a little look at their political program tells a lot about it). The party still tries to be closer to the center but is this fake to gain some votes?

So it's not a surprise to learn that Conservatives are not popular here. And if there's is no major changes at the core of the party, it will never be. I'll even go further by saying that a Conservative governament in Ottawa IS probably a step toward Qu

They called people and asked them to sign up as MPs?! Haha!

Now I think I'm party-less again. Really, aside from Sponsorship and far-fetched pre-election spending promises, what bad things have the Liberals done?

Well, I like all, am hoping and praying that MsD makes a quick and speedy recovery.  The news was a jaw-dropper to me when I read it.

Truckin_Papa: My apologies for not welcoming you to the Moose Factory.  I was too stunned at the news about MsD at the moment.

Since I logged on to post an update on our Friend MsD, I thought I would come on in here and check things out like a regular person instead of the bearer of bad news.

So, is this like a regular bar?  If so what do you have on tap?

Is this a non-smoking establishment?

    @zmveliger: Quebec winters? Hah.

There once was a boy from Quebec
Who was buried in snow to his neck.
He was asked, Is you friz?
And he said, Yes, I is.
But we don't call this cold in Quebec.

An old limerick, but there you are.

Now let's be quite clear about the upcoming federal election. I currently have a Conservative member whom I like very much. I will vote for her. I would like to see the liberals out, out, out! Their arrogance has become just too much for me. The only other party that is prepared to govern is the Conservative party. If the NDP got control of a minority parliament, we would be taxed even more than we are now. The Bloc should be arrested en mass and imprisoned for apprehended insurrection. What other country in the world would allow a party dedicated to sedition? The Greens are a refreshing voice, and if the Green leader runs again in similin' Jack's riding, I dearly hope he wins. If Quebec wants to separate, have a revolution. All the wheel squeaking is just annoying. Maybe all those intellectual Quebecois think we would let them go peacefully. I seriously doubt it. I don't see why Quebec hasn't given up the two solitudes. If you think you are alone now, wait until you are a francophone island in a continent of English. France has already bid you all a fond adieu.

@ vidioman: By all means, vote Green (none of the above). Just be sure you vote, or you will not be allowed to $%&^!. And if someone were to ask you to run for the Green's why would you refuse. Haven't you ever heard of grass roots democracy (however contaminated with mercury it may be)?

@Truckin_Papa: Welcome again. Yes, this is a non-smoking environment. Page back a little to where TT lit up his cigar to find out what happens to smokers. We are not exactly like a regular bar. We have a hyper-modern autosystem which can get you anything you want by way of food and drink, properly served. If you think (aloud) about what you would like, it will appear, sometimes with snide comments from the system like this. Currently, beers of the British Isles are available at cellar temperature, central european beers are chilled, others as the custom of origin. Wines are generally served: reds at room temperature, whites chilled, champagne frapp

My landlady passed away on Wednesday and I never really found the opportunity to post it. She was such a nice woman. Now her alcoholic (and I mean very alcoholic, getting drunk out of their minds and throwing up and screaming all night alcoholic) son and his wife (who, aside from being an alcoholic, has brough home 2 guys one night and then totally flipped out on us) have taken control of the house. All of her silver and other special things are gone, most of her belongings have been picked though, its a total disgrace15.gif They seem a bit calmer today, though. They were yelling at her other son, who lives next door, and he stormed out the other day after they called him a loser (he is the only one of her kids that isnt married). He's the one that has been signing for the rent since our landlady was in hospice (like a hospital, but they make it very comfortable for your last days) and is trying to get ownership of the house, but they're giving him a hard time. They might try to evict us, and he said he'll do anything he can to prevent it from happening..

Another winter, and there's uncertainty in the air. My life always falls apart at Christmas...

    I need a drink.15.gif

I know that this is a little bit late, but since zmveliger requested this, I thought that I would release it anyway.

As we all know about MsD, I have created a custom link to the well-wishing thread that anyone who wants it can copy to their sig.

<CENTER><B><A href=https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=70912><FONT size=1><FONT color=FF6666>One of our members, MsD, is in the hospital with a serious condition.
If you would like to wish her well, please click here.</FONT color=FF6666></FONT size=1></A></B></CENTER>

I have included the html codes that are necessary for changing the size of the text.  The number 1's that you see in bold are the values that determine the font size.  I experimented with it to make sure that it worked.  It does, but I wouldn't make those values any more than 3, because it will be too big with a 4 or higher.

Also, I included the center commands, so if you don't want it to be centered, just delete them.

Pretty good. I'd suggest a slight change in colour, though, as that is a bit hard to read. it looks a little blurry. Maybe use CC0000?

    See?

It stands out more, and is easier to read. FF6666 is too light to read with a white background.

I have a job interview on Tuesday! It's been many months since I became unemployed and awhile since I decided to give up teaching. Now let's see if I can do this!

I'm interviewing with Thompson Nelson. They're a publisher of educational materials. I'm quite familair with their stuff as I have used some of it in my classes before.

I'm really excited. This is the perfect way to get out of teaching yet still use the skills I studied and gained through experience over the last seven years.

OMG I have a Thompson Nelson textbook!! I've had quite a few, actually. Our school had a deal with them a few years ago, but now we've swtiched to Addison Wesley. I think Thompson still does the science books, though. And there is a smaller company from Ottawa the makes our Geography Textbooks. My math book was Nelson, though. So was our teachers name3.gif

Thanks Voar Tok who answered my request. Thanks to everyone who wants to improve it. Diversity is something nice anyway. If a few members can have that signature, it will be something very positive indeed.

@N_O_Body: snow is a very effective insulator. Being buried in it (well, a way you can move a little bit, like inside an igloo) is a very effective protection against cold. BTW, in my class of ecophysiology, the moose was one of the typical species well adapted to very cold environment. Despite heavy lost of heat by convection, its body mass has a low surface/volume ratio and a good insulation. Behavior is a very important factor too and the moose knows well where are sheltered areas (like very compact spruce forests) in his territory.

Regarding political stuff, I'll wait until things get cooler... Touched a sensitive spot haven't I?

I'll be back soon anyway. I just wanted to be sure that my new chair warmer technology is up to the task for MsD's seat.

@Vid: I think you'ld be better off living under a bridge in T.O. Hope everything comes out all right.

@ Eastwinn: I assume you mean the thing in your sig box called My sig. Well, it is nice, but you didn't have to go to all that trouble. Any good HTML editor (e.g. Arachophilia) would have done the job. It is a freebie.

@ Voar Tok: Thanks. My sig is pretty packed, so I won't use this one. You worked hard on it, eh?

@ zelgadis: Good luck on your interview. I have used a lot of their texts before I retired. I always considered Nelson one of the best in the business.

@Compromise: You can make your own sig. It's not that hard if you know HTML. Mine was built with Ulead's GIF Animator, and it needs some work, but I don't have the inclination. A large hot mug of foamy hot chocolate is served. There is a large bowl of mini-marshmallows on the side with a shaker of chocolate sprinkles. Enjoy.

@zmveliger: Well, my wiggly friend, I know about snow and igloos and all that. We have some Inuit in Ontario too. A truly amazing people. Anyway, the political stuff, including the dig at you, are not important. Frowned on here anyway, so maybe we should just let it all cool. I am glad you appreciate the better qualities of meese.

Yesterday when I went to get groceries, my grandma told me she had a dream where me and my mo- I mean, my mom and I... 21.gif ... lived in a condo in downtown TO, and she decided she was going to go out there and visit us all the time. It was weird. People in my family always tell me weird things... Everyone tells me weird things, actually.....41.gif

The fighting has stopped, but tomorrow we have to clean up the house entirely (we're pretty messy people, it's not piles of mold and garbage messy, just papers all over and cluttery messy, but anyway) they're selling the house, so we have to clean it up. I'll have to point out the fact that the toilet wobbles, the tub won't drain, and the smoke detector is busted (the landlady's son was going to fix it, but now since they're selling, and he was kicked out, they might not). We get to stay here, but I dont think we can keep the free cable8.gif. if that's the case, we're making the new owners charge only 600$ a month (instead of the 680$) uintil they reconnect us, and we'll just connect it in my name. (Maybe get satellite instead)

The house is on a double lot too, so even though its quite small, they have to pay twice as much taxes for two lots.

I was going for a pink theme since I don't know what her favorite color is, however, I don't care if you change the color or anything else.  I just picked a color and set it up for everyone to copy if they wanted it and otherwise customize to their hearts content.  And believe it or not, I actually used that color, but I thought it might be a little bit too red.

    Hi everyone,

I came here to get some news from Truckin_Papa.  Since I have a few minutes to kill, why not coming here and take a Guiness.

@Voar Tok: yes, I'm as skillful with HTML than I am with violin (=0). With your explanations, I've been able to get it a little bit bigger and green. Why? It's the color of hope.

@N_O_Body: don't forget to bookmark this page since I'll gladly come back on the post you did on 11/26/2005 9:40:38 PM .

An Inuit tale... When I was working in Gaspe peninsula on intertidal ecology, I met a real Inuit coming from... well I don't remember precisely but it's near Iqaluit (a very shy but really friendly guy). In the summer, he took 2 weeks off to visit his family. I went hunting beluga whales during that time. When he came back, he brought with him one of the most appreciated food there: frozen beluga skin! That is not cooked at all, raw meat, and like most polar mammals, beluga whale is insulated with... fat. So these little cubes were 100% white, a little rough on the skin surface and greasy on the other... If you want to know what it tastes, well, I don't really know. Since my teeth couldn't get through the skin rapidly, an emergency procedure has been taken: swallowing it in one piece ASAP. One of my friends decided to be more persistent and finally bit something hard in the middle, oval shape. She turned almost green when we realised that it probably was a skin parasite, something common on this species...

@vidioman: regarding the Green Party, I'll add that they have the right to ask anyone to represent them and that all canadian citizens can be elected (with a few conditions). I would never pretend that I'm a celebrity but the environmental group I was working for at that time was not completely unknown and that being its coordinator placed me in the public arena (one foot at least). But yes, it's still funny...

@zelgadis: I won't wish you luck since luck is random process and it excludes competence and credit. I'll wish you success instead.

I reached 400 posts... Drinks for everyone here and a special recovery mix for our MsD if delivery is possible.

@Vid: Bell Express Vu is currently selling their basic receiver plus a dish for $99 + subscription. I think they have a long haul deal for free programming. You should check the Bell.ca web site.

@zmveliger: Guiness is served as you like it. Thanks for the drinks.

Green Party or None of the above: These new boys on the block, who we know through their web site, got enough votes last time to be funded by the act Chretien put through to cut down on corporate contributions (ha!). They have a good chance of electing a few members this time. If you don't have any particular reason to vote for one of the others, vote for them. If they get some seats, we will then have a five party house. Why should the Europeans have a monopoly on insanity?

Well, it was a nice long trip up here from where I live but the trip was worth it.  Its nice and warm in here.  Beer please!

As you can tell, I don't have a lot of computer smarts.  If it wasn't for deb, I'd still be afraid to turn one on.

Voar Tok & zmveliger:  Thank you both for the signitures, (I think that's right) I will have to check that out and see if I can add one to my posts.

^And I thought politics in the US was confusing. 47.gif

Looking outside, it's 40 degrees and raining.  Is there any more depressing weather around?  No snow, and you can't go out in the rain like you can when it's 70...  just wet, cold and miseriable.

Speaking of misery, I have some bad news to relate from Freeland.  Joe Barker (AKA beserk666) died last month of a heart attack in his sleep.  Joe was one of Freeland's founders and a very productive member in the SC3k community.  More here .

What kind of beer do you prefer? Whatever it is, it's on my bill. I'll take a Guiness (that's my 2nd tonight wooooo!) I'm quite familiar with computer but not programming, Internet, forums... I'm not used to their jargon (most of it is slang English and I don't master it enough... yet) When D...MsD will tell you what she means with LOL, please tell me! I've figured out what it could mean but I didn't have any confirmation yet...

For the signature, you click personal section (on top of every forum page), then edit my profile. The signature window is in middle. You just have to copy-paste the code section Voar Tok made.

If you see MsD tomorrow then tell her that her place will be so warm that when she'll get back, she'll have to wait to cool it a little bit!

    Bye!

EDIT: LOL... my assumption was right.

Today I met with a few members of the fifth grade Merlin class (a class for advanced students) I was in a few years ago. We met mainly to discuss how to give thanks to our former teacher, who has, I believe, Lou Gehrigs Disease. We also discussed what we each had done over the last five years since that class. That was quite an interesting experience. While some are like me and just taking courses in high school, a few are currently getting credits at the local community college, and one is attending the University of Washington. I couldn't believe it!

At the same time I'm also getting annoyed with my CJ. It amazes me that other journals, even new ones can get a multitude of posts, sometimes a page worth, following each update, while mine chugs along on the sixth page, with three responseless updates in a row. It's bewildering.

It's probably just my family bad luck striking once again.

Though I guess in a time like this, with a member such as MsD going through such trials, I shouldn't complain about bad luck.

zmveliger:  Thank you for the drink, I prefer and stout warm (room temp)Guiness.  According to to N_O_Body, LOL means Laugh Out Loud.  It does make sence.  I think I got the signiture thing right.  I read voar-tok's post about it and did what he said to do.  And yes I will see MsD tomorrow and I will pass on your message.  I took quite a bit of time off work when she got hurt.  She's my best friend after all, and I have to be there for her.  She has always been there for me and it wouldn't be right if I didn't do the same.

ACEfanatic:  Sorry to here about Joe.  I guess this has not been a good week.

vidioman:  It's amazing how you never really find out how much you care about someone until they are no longer around.

N_O_Body:  Yes I am a truck driver.  I have been doing it since I was 21, 16 years now.  I own my own truck.  Been running independent for 7 years. I don't know a mtnmouse.  And I have only been on simcity.com once, just long enough to get what MsD said I needed.  She told me to stay off that site unless it was really important.

I case you are woundering, I've known MsD since I was 19 and I started renting this little farm house down the road from her.  She was my first neighbor to introduce themselves to me.  Her and I went to Truck Driving School togeather 16 years ago, and when we got out of school her and I drove team togeather for a year then we both went solo.  She eventually moved on to bigger and better things working in the safty department at the company we both worked for and eventually worked her way up to giving safty lectures for different companies.  And I still do what I love and that's drive over the road running all lower 48 States.
