Boy, do I have some bad news!

This morning while I was searching Google for a new desktop wallpaper I apparently caught some adware from hell - and I do mean hell.  My computer crashed, and refused to reboot.  I couldnt even get into safe mode to save all my files.

Unfortunately I haven't backed up Beruit in quite some time, and I've pretty much lost about half the work I've done on it.  There is no way I'm gonna redo it all.. so this is pretty much the end of the story.

    Sorry to dissappoint yall.

take it to a computer store like compusa, they might be able to fix it, also try using a windows 98 startup disk to access your hard drive, and if you do fix it, then install Adaware SE Personal, and you could try to get it working as hard as possible

    D'OH!

This was one of my favorite city journals.  I hope that you are somehow able to get your computer up and running and continue the development of this great city.

I was so p*ssed off about losing Beruit, I was actually considering quitting Simcity.. but after I pouted for a few days I decided to give it another chance.  3.gif

I have a few ideas for the new CJ, but nothing set in stone.  Anyone have any thoughts on what you would like to see?  In particular I'm looking for your thoughts on a US region, or state?

I hope you pick another city with a long and interesting history, like maybe Baltimore or Charleston (I mean the one in SC, though the one in WV isn't bad but it wasn't what I had in mind). There's also New Orleans (might be challenging with the levees) and Quebec City, though that's Canadian of course. Anyway, I'm glad you've decided to start a new CJ! 48.gif

I am also sad to hear the bad news about Beirut and your crashing computer. But as it seems you will be starting a new CJ not all hope is lost.
I don't know that many US regions as I live in Europe, but I have always found Atlanta a fascinating city. Ofcourse with Scarlet O'Hara in mind but also hitech and the Olympics.
Whatever you will decide upon I hope to see a new CJ from you.

you could probably save your files, if you take it to a computer store, they would probably back it up for a fee, or you could download Linux and use it to boot your computer to backup your files.

One thing is for sure, with this next region I will be backing up my files far more often.  It's worth taking the time to do.

This bad news devestated me into seclusion for several days. Well maybe not that extreme but I didn't visit the site for awhile after hearing about the loss. My suggestion for a new journal would be to make sure that the city has a rich history and that it is fictional like Beruit. I like how you had made up a city and tied it into history. I would like that as a future journal (plus there's more room for stretching the truth 11.gif).

You showed some real talent in recreating an older, eastern US city.  Have you considered Boston, or perhaps Providence RI, or another town in the New England area?

Or maybe you could just move east on the Thruway and do Rochester or Syracuse.

Thanks.  I was seriously considering Rochester - it's got some great geography.  A lake, bay, river, mountains.. it's pretty much got everything - but I'm worried it's story line will be too similar to Beruit so I've cancelled it out.

Too bad that the story has to end here... I can understand you were frustrated.

Here my suggestion: Little Rock, Arkansas

I live on Long Island. Maybe something along the lines of that. Long Island's geography is great! It's flat on the south shore and somewhat hilly on the north shore. A lot of beautiful beaches. Very suburban. Some built up spots closer to Manhattan. Well, that's my suggestion! 44.gif

Why do these things have to happen? Personally, I would recommend making your new CJ Quebec City, but I am biased because I am a Canadian. Anyways, do what you must, and I'm so sorry about losing Beruit. It was one of my favourite CJs, as well as many other people's.

    Good luck on future projects,

Well, I've chosen my new CJ's location, and I'm currently putting the finishing touches on the map.  Look for the final update to Beruit in the next few days, and keep an eye out for the new CJ as well.

Well, that's really bad that you lost so much of the work. This region is great, and watching this CJ evolve was fun. I like the fact that you kept going as you intended, instead of just getting tired of it and ending it there. This was one of the best CJs out there.

Last saturday I had something similar happen to my Ocean Point region, although the end result wasn't nearly as bad as yours. The population was around 360,000, but at the time of the last backup, it was only around 250,000, with a lot less progress. Needless to say, I've worked my as* of this week and now it's up to 400,000.

Good luck with the new region! If it's anywhere near as good as Beirut, I'll be keeping a close eye on it. 10.gif

Charles Danbury won the first mayoral election to proceed Mayor Fredrick Winshell's untimely death in 1851.  Danbury, a 36 year old who owned a burgeoning construction company, took office in December with very little fanfare.

Danbury's term may have been doomed from the very beginning.  Three days after his inauguration, Beruit was hit by a massive winter snowstorm that crippled the city for weeks.  Danbury, who did not realize the seriousness of the situation, did nothing.  Fifteen people were killed in various snow related accidents, and though there was little Danbury could have done to prevent the deaths - he still received the blame.

Shortly afterwards, in April of 1852, it was revealed that Beruit was facing a huge financial deficit.  The deficit was solely  the result of reckless spending by Danbury's predecessor, Fredrick Winshell.  However, even though Danbury had only been in office for five months and couldnt possibly have been responsible, he again - still recieved the blame.  Facing no other option, Danbury had to significantly raise taxes to keep the city running in the black.

The final blow came in July of 52', when Beruit's largest newspaper the Herald Examiner, falsely reported that Danbury was being investigated for the murder of Fredrick Winshell.  The story was quickly dispelled by Beruit's police chief, but Danbury had enough.  Just one week after the story was published, Danbury announced that he had taken a job out west and not only would he not run for reelection in 56', but he was also stepping down as mayor.

In September, Danbury and his family sold their house on the northeast corner of 27th & Holland Street, and headed west.

The Danbury's traveled westward as far as they could via the railroads.

Past Quincy, Illinois the Danbury's would have to travel over the great plains by horse drawn wagons.

Thanks to favorable weather, the Danbury's made the journey through the American Rocky Mountains safely, and quickly.

After six months on the Oregon trail the Danbury's eventually made it to their new home - the Pacific coast .
