After seeing the excellent Edmonton Transportation Map Mod by NewJerseyDevil and the Melbourne Transportation Map Mod, I was inspired to create a Transportation Map Mod.  I remember someone expressing interest in a British Transportation Map Frogface

Wouldn't be a bad idea and it would git in nicely with the British Bulldog Mod which was created by Ill Tonkso.

PS.

Motorway's are Blue,
Primary routes are Green,
Local roads are Red, Yellow and White. (Look at Streetmap.co.uk)
One way roads don't have any known colour as the direction of travel is normally shown by the presence of arrows or the lack of a border on the respective side of the road which you dont drive down (if you know what I mean, I will award you a medal because I am lost now!)

Anyway, I wish you the best with this modd, Lakeyboy might be a good person to talk to as he mad his own transportation map himself.

Wallasey thanks for the heads up on Streetmap.co.uk44.gif

Since streetmap doesn't have a legend, I would say it appears the system of classifying roads on streetmap is as follows:
At regional level       At Local Level
Motorway - Blue           Motorway - Blue
    A Primary - Green        A Route - Red
    A Secondary - Red       B Route - Orange
B Route - Yellow           Local Main - Yellow
Local - White                Local Street - White

I also finally found the London Map I have.  It is the Premier Map London A-Z
I really like this map.  The colour scheme used in it is:
    Motorway - Blue
    A Route - Orange
    B Route - Yellow
    Local - White

Based on the above, this is my new idea to translate the route classifications into SC4 terms:
    Motorway - Blue [universal]
Dual Carriageway (ie Avenue) - Orange [A Route from Premier London Map]
Road - Yellow [b Route from Premier London Map]
One Way Road - Green or Red [A Route based on streetmap.co depending on which colour appears best in game]
    Street - White [universal]
    Rail -  Black [universal]
    Elevated Rail - Grey
    Monorail - ?

I am also trying to make each transport system type clearly distinguishable on the Transportation map window and clearly visible against SC4 terrain.

I have finished editing the UI to allow the display of One-Way Roads and Streets in the Legend Window something which was left out by Maxis.

Now once I decide on a colour scheme the Mod will be ready for release.  I would appreciate any ideas or comments.  I'll get some in game pics soon.

I had forgot I was hosting this thread.

Here are some in game pictures and the new region transport legend.
    FDG%20British%20Transport%20Map%20Mod%20
    FDG%20British%20Transport%20Map%20Mod%20

All the colors are clearly visible and distinguishable from one another in the transport view.  The Legend now displays one way roads and streets.

Comments or questions appreciated.  I just need to a little time and I'll have it up on the stex.39.gif

I hate to rain on your parade but as a bonafide Englishman I don't think this mod is very British at all? It just about qualifies as London but London is the only city to really have this colour scheme. For the other 49 million of us in the UK it is most definitely as follows (if you live out side london you very rarely drive in it, trains and tube only)...

Motorway - Blue (the one you have is fine)
Avenue - Dark Green (Trunk road colour)
    Road - Red (A Road)
Road 2 - Yellow (B Road, i think u won't be able to mod this as we have two road classifications for 'roads')
One Way - Yellow (Maybe these could be the B Roads but it wouldnt be quite right)
    Streets - White (C Road/Minor roads)
    Rail - Black
GLR/El - Black and white diaginal stripes (not sure if possible)
Mono - Red and white diagonal stripes

Every road map not just Streetmap (The AA, RAC, Collins) has the same colour scheme for a 'regional level' view. So in the region view you are effectively looking at a overview of multiple cities. Your colour scheme represents a city map not a region map. This may all sound a bit blunt but I like your idea a lot and so will tons of other people so I want to make sure you get it right. Wallesey will probably agree with me that to a British person especially one who lives outside of London it means aboslutely nothing unless it its the above colour scheme. Also a small suggestion would be to not use a grid pattern for the display purposes as in the above screenshot, for true UK representation nothign in the UK has ever been built in grid pattern (except maybe milton keynes). Put some curve into it. Take say a small segment of street map at regional level from streetmap.co.uk with the different roads on it, recreate this in simcity and you will be able to see how good it is.

I hope this helps and isn't too offputting but i think you have a winning idea

EDIT: I have just had a rethink after lookign at streetmap.co.uk, The map you are looking at is whats called and ordnance survey map on the closer zooms. Road atlases which i feel would be more appropriate for transport maps use the above colour schemes.

    actually london coulours are:

white            =street and 1 way road,
    yellow          = b road
    orange/red   = a road
    blue             = motorway
    black/white   = train/glr

and thats it..... oh yeh canals are blue?
and footpaths are blue dotted lines.

    london for ever!

Le_harv thanks so much for your feedback.  10.gif As you say London is not all Britian, but I got to pick something.  I admit my knowledge of the country is limited especially outside London.   About the only thing which is universal is the blue motorway, which seems distinct from the rest of the world.

I have gone back and forth on wheter to consider the region view in SC4 a true regional map.  The size of regions in SC4 are really the size of cities in real life.  In addition, regional maps almost never display side streets, but the regional map in SC4 does.  So I think of it as more than a city map.

As for the grid, I know it sucks 46.gif and not popular in UK, but I don't have any real transportation in my cities, so I just quickly plopped a grid to display the various transport types.

Unfortunately I do not believe dashed colors are possible.

The mod is now uploaded on the STEX.  I would be happy to release a new more british or more regional version using Green for A Roads [ie Avenues] (but I can't use dark green b/c you can't see it against the green terrain background26.gif) or make any other changes should people desire.  Anyway take a look at the mod on the STEX and let me know what you think and if you have any more ideas on translating standard map to the SC4 map.17.gif.

jackel.22 - I see I got the London colors down.  Since SC4 doesn't have real routes A-B but changes colors based on road types, I used the orange for A Routes as Avenues, and the Red color for A Routes as the One Way Road.
