I unfortunately don't have a backup folder like I should have, but I placed a few mods in my city ( can't remember which ones) and ever since I placed them and saved the city, the game suddenly crashes whenever I try to play again.

Is there a way to restore to a certain prior date,, kinda like how you can do in windows??

Some questions to diagnose this:

  • Do you happen to know if any of those mods was labeled as using HD textures or props? If yes, these can cause crash-to-desktop (CTD) problems if running the game in software rendering mode.
  • What are your graphics settings? If you have any HD content, you're gonna need to set the game to hardware rendering (uses graphics card or an embedded GPU built into the CPU)
  • Make sure your game is set to use 1 core. To check, right click Properties, go to the Shortcut tab, and on the box labeled Target: write the following, exactly as shown -CPUCount:1
  • Is the Network Addon Mod among the mods you're using? If yes, you might need to apply the 4GB patch to the game's executable, SimCity 4.exe . You'll need to open the 4GB patch executable file (provided as part of the NAM installation package), and navigate to where you have the game installed. Select the game's executable file, patch it, and then try loading the game again.
  • Are you using a terrain mod, but are missing dependencies? Terrain mods can cause CTDs if you have the core terrain mod, but not the associated textures. The game crashes because the terrain mod can't summon the textures it requires, as they're not in the Plugins folder.

Also, I have some further questions:

At what point exactly does the game return you to desktop? While loading the game? While loading a city? After loading a city?

Please also try to find out which mods you have installed. At least which type, such as a terrain mod, ploppable/growable buildings, and so on. Another way to find this out is to make a backup of your Plugins folder, then cut its content in half and see if this solves the problem. If yes, you know for sure that this half doesn't contain any offending mod. Then, you can continue to cut the remaining content in half again until you find the offending file.

Also, Windows Explorer allows you to check the date you last changed a folder by putting something in. If you have more than one subfolder in your Plugins folder, you might at least be able to find out which subfolders come into question of containing offending files.

Maybe next time, this won't happen to you.
