Google Maps used to include 45-degree aerial photography in many populated areas, but removed that feature some years ago and replaced it with computer-generated 3d graphics.  Here is a link which restores access to the aerial photography.  I find the photography to be much higher in detail.

I read that Google Maps was planning a big upgrade. But you know how upgrades go with Google. I'm on the hunt for sites that have rail lines as well as streets.
