Commissioning Music

I reckon that anyone who knows me and knows what I do has a pretty good idea that I've commissioned many, many pieces of art over the years. 

For a new project I'm working on, I am might be interested in commissioning a piece of music for it. My searches for people to take music commissions, however, show prices that frequently run in the hundreds or thousands of dollars for something a few minutes long. I'm not looking for anything massive or commercial here. This is a personal project for which I receive rather minimal donations.

If anyone can help steer me in the right direction, towards some affordable music commissions, that would be nice.

Mainly I do sounds and audio dramas for radio but I did some music too - as it is a side product of my work, some of them I can give away for free.

I recommend you to make personal contact with people on social networks for musicians, like f.e. SoundCloud, or sound creators like f.e. freesound.org - dependend on what you need. It's much easier to mail a creator and make offers instead of searching for commercial offers - musicians without (expensive) promoters expect to be contacted by you.

I realize I should probably have stated the sort of music I'm looking for, which might help with suggestions. I'm looking for a trailer-style piece. Whether it's orchestral, synth, or whatever doesn't really matter as long as the mood is right.

I have had limited experience with sidtes like SoundCloud, but I shall investigate further as suggested.

The normal process would be - after you made contact to a musician you would sent him the raw material - a video perhaps - and he would compose the music exclusively. To find music that matches in length, indeed mood, rythm (it's important that rythm matches the cutting of scenes or the transitions of credits etc.) it's difficult.

It's not different to batting. You can search for a bat that matches your idears or you can do a bat request. The same on functional music - the first will only be a compromise.

You may not know Kate Markowitz as she worked as a background singer for France Gall. For a Bacardi rum commercial she did a song called 'Summer feeling' , initially 1 minute long to match the commercial's length. Later, in an extended version, it became a no. 1 hit in several countries and got platin. But it was a remittance work for a advertising agency, done by an unknown artist. So one has to see advertising agencies as a big sponsor for artists.

Now you are in the same role. You are a sponsor for musicians - and fame, that's what makes your offer interesting apart from money.  But first you have to find you a musician, a band, a school choir - a sleeping cinderella to kiss awake.
