Whenever I see a product that says "New and improved!" or when someone suggests that they've got an idea noone's ever thought of yet, I think of that verse. :-)

When I see "New and Improved!" I dismiss it as a marketing ploy since the two words contradict each other - new being something original and improved being bettering something that already exists.

You think think of a Bible verse while I rationalize through contradiction.  But to the same end.

This post has no real point. 20.gif

Well, The internet is covered in the Bible as well, in prophecy. The internet functions using, science that has always been present, just undiscovered, but not new. Christ warns of a time, when knowledge will travel to and fro and be at our fingertips constantly. That time is now.

Systems for communication and media have been intelligently designed in past civilizations and nearly as efficient, without the technology. Even large pyres of flame, could send a signal over hundreds of miles, almost instantly. The idea in human minds, was always there though.

Nothing New under the sun is speaking of concepts, ideas and philosophy that lead to advancements, but not speaking of the inventions themselves.

Although simple motors and steam engines have been discovered in early Greece and Egypt. As well as a drycell battery from before the time of Christ. Proven to still work even.

Someone in ancient history, many 1000's of years ago, must have certainly thought; "wouldn't it be nice to travel to the moon?" Nothing new in a mans mind or it's limits.

I still believe it holds true, that there is nothing new under the sun. What lays undiscovered, has already been wondered upon and only waits to be found and confirmed.

EDIT:SkiGeek:  It may have been slower, but I remember how big my class was on penpals during the 70's. I still have a penpal by the way and we have sent all sorts of things through the mail and later met up on the internet too.  The principal, rewards and goals are still identical.

Thanks, Tim. 2.gif

About frndofyaweh's most recent post:  42.gif

So, you're telling me that once the words in the Bible were concieved by men who claimed to get them from God, everything that we know now existed then and nothing new has happened.  That - somehow, someway - once Christianity as we know it established itself, human progress just stopped - halted in it's tracks that have left millions of miles of history and, what I believe, will continue to produce millions - no, kagillions - more.

Your post made absoltely no sense to me.  Did someone in 1 CE imagine splitting an atom to create energy so powerful as to run millions of light sources utilizing the properties of electrons through resistance - or obliterate a population of thousands in a World War?  Did someone in the Middle Ages ponder the thought of microprocessors so small and powerful that they could pack it in with SDRAM, a graphics card, a SATA hard drive, some flashy plastic casing and a WXGA screen so that they could run a city simulation to test their new highway layout?  What did the peoples of BCE mesopotamia think of lasers that could correct vision difficiency or stylish, massed produced, and ever-so-affordable furniture from IKEA that is packed in such small flat-packs for easy transport in your new corn-powered minivan with kids in the back watching Pixar Animation's DVDs and playing with their new Playstation Portable that has at least 4 hours of playtime from the trusty and rechargable Lithium-Ion battery pack?

Innovation and invention is what makes humans so amazing.  And it doesn't stop when some book says it does.

And one last thing, if Christ did warn of us a time which is now - what is next?  What should we be expecting in the next 10 to 100 years?  What is the next "a time when...(fill in with Bible prophecy)"?

(I got a little carried away.  Sorry if I offended. G'nite!)

Actually Thesonofgray, you make a very valid point. Off topic maybe, but still you are correct; it's that famous oxy-moronic slogan: almost like new and slightly used, but your phrase is a better one;

You made a new and improved slogan! hahaa

Nothing to do with Christianity or belief in God. It is just simple wisdom(council); There is not one dream or one nightmare that has not been experienced at some point in time. History is destined to repeat itself; this is also from the Bible. If you seriously take a look at each milliniem, you do see a distinct pattern in humanity or should I say civilized man. We never learn and we forget the hard lessons of our ancestors.

Not defending the Bible here, just the wise phrases of the author,....no matter whom you believe the author is.

Most compelling research for me is how astrology, astronomy and history and the Bible all have an exact duplicate time stamp on them: So far all of it has developed just as it was claimed it would. Even the Incas, Aztecs and Mayans saw this and made the perfect calculations to solve this issue. They did not have telescopes and computers either, but still managed to get the same results as NASA themselves have.

The Bible does follow the cycles of life, because it is Living Word and the universe is alive and also follows lifes revolutions and as all things go around the face of a clock, so does the universe revolve also. And God the Father says he is  alive and infinite, which is the true circle and all things that exist revolve around this same circle and are paralell to one another.

The sun, moon, stars and comets; the Earth, the people, the events that occur all match up, all follow and repeat the journey again and again. We have been there before and have only forgotten.

Woe to those who enter the age of Cancer, for that time is now and the journey begins all over again with Gemini or the Hebrew term Genesis or English: The Beginning. And so on it goes, just as there is a tropic of Cancer line on any globe in any library or school, so also is there an age of Cancer on this Earth and also a constellation of Cancer and a time for Cancer mentioned in the Living Word.

What really matters is this; has the Bible ever been wrong? No never. it always has the perfect solution, no matter how harsh civil minded folks may think the Bible is; it's answers are most assuredly the best possible scenerio, when dealing with sheep. Another paralell that is so true, it would blow your mind. Jesus and God called us sheep for a really good reason, ladies and gentlemen.

How does that work aren't we supposed to be in the age of aquarius? how can you go from one constellation to annother that is not adjacent is not logical. the 2 adjacent to aquarius is  pices and capricorn. How is the age determioned it seems rather arbitary.

THats the problem with voilence it keeps escalating. Just look at what is going on down here on this world 3k americans die and an unknown number of iraqis die cause of some criminal who is reading  and belives some mouldy tome that says everyone else not of your religion is infedel.

With respect to the current topic:  While I think there is a fine line between action from philosophy and ideas for creation/invention, the two are seperate things and I was referring to the progress of human invention and innovation.  There is nothing new in this world in terms of the philosophical - and I do agree, with action, history does repeat itself.

On a different topic: the ever so perfect God : humans :: shepard : sheep

<stream of thought>

If this is such a perfect analogy then let me ask you this:  Why does a shepard tend to his flock of sheep?  Because he loves them?  No.  Because those sheep are the shepard's livelihood.  Those sheep are shaved every season to put food on the shepard's table and without them, the shepard would not survive.

Soooo...what do we give to God that provides for his livelihood?

I find that that analogy is a bad one unless we provide the means for sustinence for the existance and well being of God (and maybe we do?).  I would like the know why the "words of God" refer to Jesus and God as shepards to their flock, since that must mean they we provide them with a means for existance.  And if there is something, who is the truley powerful one in this relationship?  And just as governments do, they want to make sure and hide the true power that the masses could potenitally wield.  Which makes it more obvious as to why humans have such "feeble" minds and reasoning compared to the "always right and good" God according to the Bible - the supposed words of God himself.  Hm.

This is all assuming that there is a god, of course.

</stream of thought>

Sheesh, I'm tired. 24.gif

Edit:

<more stream of thought>

If that analogy is in fact a true one, then it is obvious as to why God feels the need to have everyone believe in Him and do His bidding.  And it makes more sense why people like me, ones who do not believe in Him, are such a "threat" to what He says is His followers when it is in fact Him that is the one that is threatened.  Without followers, He would be nothing, God would be a distant memory with no importance on this Earth.  So who is truely the vulnerable one here?  Is it us feeble and weak humans?  Or is it God himself -the vulnerable one- so dependant on our faith that He requires it of us so much so that He commands followers to convert/kill disbelievers? Free will is marked as something that has ruined mankind forever and that the only way to redeem ourselves is to have undeniable belief in God - but it seems that free will is only the enemy of God himself, since we have the power, as the sheep providing for His existance - to simply cease in providing for Him.  Who is weak?  Who is powerful?  Who is really the one who can decide the other's fate??

This is still assuming that there is a God.

My my my, such views are the trade-off for technological and scientific advancement, it seems.

God will still be there, immutable and never-ending even if no one in the world believed in Him, which isn't possible, given His promise that the Church will remain until the end of time. But hey, doesn't matter to many.

I'm going to do some exam revision, so I can't be bothered typing anything longer than half a paragraph.

TSOG,

Interesting thoughts, but I don't buy them.

Before we go any further in the discussion, let's look at an exerpt from John 10, where Jesus talks about being a shephard to his flock of sheep:

11"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

14"I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me - 15just as the Father knows me and I know the Father - and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. 17The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life - only to take it up again. 18No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father."

Also, from Luke 15:

Luke 15

The Parable of the Lost Sheep

1Now the tax collectors and "sinners" were all gathering around to hear him. 2But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them."

3Then Jesus told them this parable: 4"Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? 5And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.' 7I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

Also, from Matthew 9:

The Workers Are Few

35Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field."

Matthew 12:

9Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue, 10and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, they asked him, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?"

11He said to them, "If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? 12How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath."

Clearly in these passages, when Jesus is talking about a sheep, it is a valuable, valuable commodity. It is the kind of thing that you risk your life for. When one is missing, or in danger, the shephard goes out and looks for it. It isn't just a trite object that could be easily replaced, the same that one person is unique and special and isn't just "replaced." My question is this: Without the shephard, what purpose does the sheep have? It will be born, eat a little bit of grass, perhaps meet a mate, maybe copulate (if it doesn't get eaten first) and then die. Such lack of purpose. And this it the purpose that the secular world wishes to put on Man. The thing is, whether the sheep wants to believe it or not, the Shephard exists and is there to provide for it. The sheep can try to survive on its own, but when the wolves attack, they've chosen to disregard the Shephard as superstition, myth, "too good to be true," and before they have the possibility to accept the protection of the Shephard, they fall prey to the wolves and don't fulfill their purpose.

A sheep that is in the fold of the Shephard serves a fulfilling life that does so much more than live an egocentric reality. The sheep in the Shephard's flock provides wool to clothe the Shephard and provide a livelihood for the Shephard. But even more, the Shephard is able to provide warm clothing for the villagers as well with the sheep's wool. It is so much more than simply allowing the Shephard to have an existance.

TSOG, your post implied that without followers, God would not exist. Yet in the Gospel of Luke it says that if we fail to cry out to God, even the stones will cry out to him and sing him praise!

One... hmm... I don't want to call it an error or bring it into judgement... One flaw, as I see it, in your analogy is that you seem to be taking it as the end all argument. That simply isn't fair, by anyone's reconing. I am a man, but I am not just a man. I am a brother, a Christian, a husband, a son, an uncle, a friend, a lover, a servant, a rule-follower. To call me just one of these things is true, but it does not begin to grasp the entire span of my being. How much more does limiting an infinite God not begin to grasp the entire, endless, span of His being?!?

See, now that is a reply.

First, I don't post things in this thread hoping that people will "buy it".  I post things like that random thought above because I want people to challenge them - just like you did - so that I can either reinforce my beliefs or change them.  This is often the attitude I get when talking to Christians, since a large part of your faith is trying to convert people.  My beliefs do not include converting everyone I can to believe what I believe to be true.  As I have said before many times, I have no issue with any belief system as long as it doesn't bring harm to others.

Concerning this interesting analogy...again, I ask you, why does the shepard take care of the sheep?  Maybe Jesus is referring to some super duper compassionate radical shepard, because I know a shepard as someone who tends to sheep to keep them alive so that they can provide wool which provides for his livelihood.  Just like ranchers take care of cattle, or dairy farmers take care of cows, or poultry farmers take care of chickens.  Or farmers take care of their plants.

Without the shephard, what purpose does the sheep have? It will be born, eat a little bit of grass, perhaps meet a mate, maybe copulate (if it doesn't get eaten first) and then die.quote>

Um...yeah

That is what every single animal does in the wild.  It sustains itself to procreate and then eventually dies.  Even humans do that.  That is the purpose of our lives and the lives of everything living.  The only reason humans do other things than eat and have sex is because we can.  Humans have evolved past the days of worrying about the next meal or having to find a mate and hoping the baby survives past 6 months.  So we can pursue other interests.  And if you notice, the majority of what we do is to make life easier, our survival more reassured.  I'm going off on a tangent here so I'll stop.  But yes, if we didn't shave sheep for their wool, the sheep would live life before they were domesticated like nature intended.

About the end all argument...well, my automatic assumption based on my beliefs is that there is no god so therefore God wouldn't be infinite.  But you make a good point to those who do believe in that.  I was merely pointing out the...more interesting aspects of the popular shepard-sheep analogy used so often in Christianity.

An interesting side note...the quote over the Sabbath - so what if your job is to do good?  Like a social worker or a police man or a computer technician or...etc.  So, in other words, only criminals and the less...respectable careers should follow the "no working on the Sabbath" commandment?  Seems like a contradiction to me.

I think I might be getting sick. 14.gif

We dawned on Aquarius long ago and it is dusk. But forget that jargon....again.

Moganite said; "Not supprising but true everything is recycled ultimately and matter and ernergy are interchangeable and cannot be destroyed merely transformed."

Yes, and your spirit is made of energy and can only be transformed. Gee, isn't that what Jesus tried to say.... alot of times.

So is not the very science of it; An entity that survives on energy, connected to an entity made of unlimited energy, would make us how powerful?

I am nothing, without my Fathers strength(Holy Spirit).

It is not about converting, it is about spreading great news.

I know the secret to eternal life! Not only do I know it is coming, I have rewards already that edify this faith I have.

If you knew for sure that you had the secret to living forever with nothing but adventure joy and no hardships; wouldn't you feel you had to tell those you care most for?

Then the catalyst to that is; the very thing that is eternal, also compells you to care most for everyone.

See where this leads a believer who has experienced an active relationship with Christ?

I amexcited to tell you how it works and at the same time saddened that I cannot make you see it. Love and sorrow mingle when I speak to you Sonofthegray and any others also.

That makes me awfully sad to hear that.  The last thing I want from anyone here is pity because I do not believe what you believe.  I am absolutely happy with my life and the choices I have made.  It should not matter what a person believes is beyond death or beyond worldly affairs.  What should truely matter is how a person uses the life he has and how he conducts himself in worldly affairs.  So please don't be saddened because I do not believe in God and that Christ is not His son.

Concerning your spirit remark, you assume that there is such a thing as a spirit - which no science has proven.  Our bodies are recycled into the Earth and nature when we die which follows the conservation of energy principle.

And one last thing.  Frndofyaweh, do you really have no hardships in your life?  Because if you don't, I feel sorry for you.

Be happy everyone!! Life's too short not to. 10.gif

I am excited to tell you how it works and at the same time saddened that I cannot make you see it. Love and sorrow mingle when I speak to you Sonofthegray and any others also.quote>

10.gif

To Jglei701: I had a book that explained the sheep and shepherd so very well tooo, but lost it in a fire. The same fire that melted my SC3000 CD. Yes that would be a hardship, but I would not trade the experience for the world. Because of that fire I bought SC4 instead and never did get a chance to SC3000. Good out of bad, no matter how small it seems.

Did you know; If the Ewe escapes through the fence and starts eating the greener pasture next door the farmer not only shoots the ewe sheep, but must shoot her lambs also?

Why? same reason for humans; when a mother teaches her children a bad example, they never depart from it and then in turn teach it to their offspring.

Well Thesonofgray, We are both saddened but that is not a bad emotion for me or you. It tells me that I still care and it also warms my heart to know you care back.

Afterall, our beliefs and opinions are fun to discuss, but the friendships we make are priceless.

On Hardships:

Just ships; they sail in and sail out, carrying us to different destinations. Enjoy the journey but prepare for your arrivals.

The spirit is energy; electrical currents. Science has most certainly proven that we contain electrical current as well as an aura that grows and shrinks based on emotional stimuli.

Which is really what I am saying.

Remember all of you; I said here before that I am not your typical Christian.

I believe science most certainly does explain every part of my Bible and even its very existance. Gods existance as the energy that makes all things and our universe.

Factually speaking the body does lose 0.001 grams of weight at the moment of death, howver this has been disputed as weight loss due to releasing a final breath, but still not completely founded.

Again, every miracle in the Bible is also scientifically reasonable and strangely it is based on sciences that were not yet known when it was written.

There is also a story where a prophet uses CPR to revive a dead girl and that was 4000 years ago.

Does that apply to other things also?  My mother is Catholic.  We went to a Methodist church cause my dad is Protestant.  Both believe in God.  I was raised that way.  But as a 20 year old, I don't believe God exists.

Does every child with a bad parent grow up to be a bad parent?  I say no.  Of course, there is a great possibilty of it, but if that child has at least one good influence then there is a chance for success.  Again, I really don't understand why Christianity gives up so easily on the young.  The young lambs could have still been taught right by the farmer or other sheep instead of being killed.

Also, grass grows back.  So I think that's a pretty extreme punishment for crossing the fence to eat.  But I don't think that was the real point of the story. 21.gif

And I'd like to hear more about the CPR story if you have the details.

Thesonofgray: I am talking about morality here, lessons learned. Not wether you believe in God, but the fact that your parents did believe, made you good and fair person. Is this the truth? or did you turn out bad and unfair?

Its not the grass; its the breaking down the fence and escaping into a place where wolves eat you!

Once one sheep learns it, it will never ever stop escaping for the greener grass and the whole fold will begin to break down fences. This is absolutely true also. Just go research sheep farming.

Humans do this also follow the leader: Even I do it whether I like it or not. Good or bad habits, we all choose something and usually it's because we see others doing it and we want the experience also.

Do not know about you Thesonofgray, but when I want something bad enough; nothing or no one will stop me, especially when its better food, eh.

I guess the wolves have already gotten to me.  2.gif

While I nor my parents nor my friends nor most people that know me wouldn't consider myself a bad or unfair person, I would imagine the Pope or any clergyman would consider a homosexual-athiest as that little lamb eating the greener grass and being knawed on by wolves.

Of course humans do it, too!  You're eating the (what you think is) greener grass of Christianity and I'm eating the (what I think is) greener grass in Athiesm.

Fooooood.  I'd kill for good food.  I just wouldn't risk my life for it either. 2.gif(j/k - the killing thing)

These parables are funny.  I'm really hungry now.
