Plane carrying a Brazilian football team crashes in Colombia

Seventy-six people died when a chartered plane carrying members of a Brazilian soccer club, Chapecoense, crashed on the outskirts of Medellín, Colombia. This is the biggest tragedy in the Brazillian sport's history.

The other South American Cup finalist, the Colombian  team  Atlético Nacional de Medellín said they will give up the final and Chapecoense should be declared champion.

Despite the news, I would like, as a Brazilian, to confirm that the whole country is in shock. Chapecoense is a club that was serving as an example of administration for all big clubs in the country, because it was a small team that went all through the 4 divisions of the Brazilian Championship until reaching the most important one. With a much smaller budget than the other teams, it was managing to stay in Serie A and had reached a historic moment: reaching its first international final in the second most important championship in the Americas.
Regardless of the team of each one, everyone was cheering for Chapecoense because they had overcome so much. Chapecoense's last game by the South American Cup was heroic with a beautiful defense of the Brazilian goalkeeper in the end of the extra time of the second half. It's weird that in a moment everybody is euphoric and hopeful and a few days later all of that goes away.
The tragedy shocked the country so much that the government decreed official mourning for 3 days. The city of Chapecó declared mourning for 30 days and canceled all Christmas events. Big clubs around the world have already paid tribute to Chapecoense, many of them saying they will help the club to financially keep up.

Now we have to hope the 6 survivors get well soon.


This match will never leave the minds of Brazilian football lovers.

Horrible. This has happened before with a famous team- Manchester United and the 1958 Munich Air Disaster.

This one is worse- the entire team wiped out.

TV reported this here too. An entire soccer team ... gone. Vanished. Scary.

Sometimes I think ... sports is the last area where adversaries show respect to each other.

 

It's like with 'Charlie Hebdo' - you strongly hope they will continue, just to remember what happened.  To be defiant against death.

So I strongly hope for Chapecoense they can go on and remain an inspiring team. Because the only shield we have against death is remembrance. It's the only way to have them with us who passed away.

It was incredible how much the victims of the accident and the Chapecoense were honored in the last days all over the world. If I were to list each one I would stay here all day, but the ones that caught my attention was the incredible tribute from Chape's opponent in the final, Atletico Nacional de Medellín, and the Colobian people that filled a whole stadium and thousands of people stayed outside because there was no place inside. I have no doubt that after this episode Brazilians will have a special affection for the Colombians. Tomorrow the bodies will arrive in Brazil and will be veiled in the stadium, probably the country will stop to a final goodbye (or a 'see you soon' as some people prefer).

Yeah, this disaster with Manchester United was remembered here and also the Torino's tragedy. This image is amazing.

It made me really sad to see this on the international news I read regularly... such a horrible tragedy. I read the team had been doing well and was en route to its first international game. Really, really sad.

The details of why the plane crashed are disturbing though. When the plane crashed, it did not explode - there was no fuel. This is very rare because planes are not supposed to run out even if they have to circle an airport for an excessively long time - or even fly to another one if need be. The route was planned at the maximum distance the plane was capable of flying. It was essentially out of fuel when it got to its destination, and got stuck circling. I'd like to know how somebody slipped that flight plan by without it getting stopped - it's my understanding there are pretty strict rules regarding the flight plans of commercial passenger flights. There's supposed to be sizable safety buffer fuel-wise.

Even worse the plane did not stop at refuelling points along the way. This is incompetence of the nth degree.
