Here is the result of a little experiment I did:

Harbors and Airports use the same AI as train stations. All that is missing is a menu button to create transit lines.

Here is what would a mod must do:

  • Add ship line menu button (simple)
  • Add missing strings to localization (simple)
  • Enable transport line panel for ship lines (probably simple)
  • Make ship lines visible in transport view (probably harder)

Nice find. However, I'm sure TLM added ferries some time ago. I never tried them though, as this meant giving up on IPT (TLM has a compatibility mode, but that disables stuff like ferries).

Edit: Yup, TLM has intracity ship lines.

By the way, your hardness assessment seems to be spot on, as the visibility of ship lines in the transport view was one of the things that broke during the last game update. Seems to be fixed now though.

Nice, I didn't know that. Though I think it would make sense to publish the ferries as a separate mod.

Also, I could update my local-only stations mod to support passenger harbors.

I tried it. It's tied to main ship routes , and I didn't get it to work in the main menu, but my setup may be a bit faulty. Also, it would probably work better on a different map with a ship route through a canal. I remember that he tried to untie this from the game's main ship routes, but it usually stopped working then.

Probably. S Klyte is very talented (I think it was him who published the original 25 tiles unlock too), but his main mod is very volatile. He seems to have new ideas all the time ;). Which is sometimes a blessing and other times a curse, when these changes always happen to the same mod.
