Preventing takeover by AI.

Recently there have been some military automata created capable of fighting on the battle field.  I suppose this is legitimate as long as control can be kept.  It has been bothering me, however, because it is possible that such gadgets might be able to make themselves.

I propose a hard and fast rule:  Under no circumstances shall an AI system be created that is capable of self-reproduction.

Comments?

The thing is that AI can think but has no emotions so would not question human authority and programming.

And all 'intelligence' would consist of calculations with a function in sight. Only if the machines could alter the function/purpose of their program would they become 'human level' machines.

And if any machines did reach human level intelligence they would simply be aptly enough given the last comment another 'race' or nation of 'humanoids' so not mych different to us.

I fear humans more than calm logical robots any day.

    that sounds mighty racist!!!

Now I think that requires an explanation.  How is a machine a race?

Humans are a complex mass of protons and electrons, etc. who use electrical signals to control different parts of their bodies to interact with one another. The brain sends an electric signal to the carbon based throat, which speaks by means of fluttering vibrations to communicate.

Robots are a complex mass of protons and electrons, etc. who use electrical signals to control different parts of their bodies to interact with one another. The brain sends an electric signal to the carbon based throat, which speaks by means of fluttering vibrations to communicate. (speakers)

If we take into account emotions, and say that humanoids who lack emotions have lesser value than those that do, than we would have to dismiss the narcissists and other persons with mental illness that impairs emotion, or roughly 5% of the existing human population.

Just like a robot, a narcissist is someone who is going to typically be full of information read off wikipedia, and like a corporation be only interested in personal and tangible profit gain for the sake of being programmed that profit is good. We are going more and more to the way of the cyborg, and everybody knows that. So where is the line going to be?

Could we say that a factory in Flint, MI that manufactures robots creates robots? Could we say that a nursery in Bethlehem, PA that manufactures clones creates people? What if we took the Planned Parenthood babies and stuck their little brains inside of robot skulls and wired them up so they could grow as a robot with a human brain? Could we cut open the back of our skulls and remove hardware, put it in a drawer, and forget memories? Then place that brain chunk into a computer and produce an image on the screen of that persons thoughts? I think the actual technology is much further along than people admit, and the more and more we delve into quantum physics and other sciences, the more I can see a direct relation between robots and people in the future.

Another thing to ponder is, since western society is about what people 'do', will robots be seen as better than certain stereotypes or races of people in the future? Will this bring down the stereotypes and create all the humans equally inferior tot he robot. The robot doesn't need a break every four hours to smoke a cigarette. The robot isn't subject to 10 hour off USDOT codes. Hell, they make a thing called meld that you put on your stove and it cooks your food for you, perfectly every time. We don't need line cooks anymore, thats ancient stuff, just like the horse and buggy. I know as the US approaches the $15/hour minimum wage, many of the big corporations that employ entry level workforce employees are developing robotic assembly lines for restaurant service.

We are not very far away from every Burger King, McDonald's, Wendy's, Subway, Jack in the Box, etc. employee being unemployed. Millions more people are gonig to be unemployed. I grew up in a culture where you worked cradle to grave, and that was kewl. You never talk back to your boss, and you produce the same product and great customer service the same way, every day, year in and year out. The longer you can do it, the more valuable you were in the eyes of the employer. People who were flighty or produced inconsistent work typically had a spotty employment history. This attraction not only applies to the workplace, but women are also keen on men who can hold down a job, and I've seen thousands of relationships that end because the guy gets canned, or quits, or layed off or whatever.

In the western world the robot is the Supreme Race.

Robot 418-02-7518 who resides at 1238 N. 32nd Street and works at ABC Company.

Both can tell you who won the game last night.

Planned Parenthood babies? Pretty sure they do other things than abortions, judging from unbiased reports. Would make for interesting sci-fi premises.

An interesting related topic is the definition of a person. Are your toes part of you? Yes.

But you could cut them off and remain the same person.

Our brains are surely thus who we actually are, or the part of us that can not be further subdivided without us becoming a different person.

Yet what about Freaky Friday. Imagine we could transplant brains. We already recognise transgender individuals. Logically one could just as easily identify as a sheep.

Now imagine a world where our brains, or the software or 'operating system' and memory that define us could be transplanted into any body, built using an intelligent substance with mixed robotic and flesh characteristics.

In such a world a person would cease to be defined by race, gender etc and could assume any form they wished.

However it is my opinion that instead of us all becoming cyborgs that we will become virtually integrated into a cyberspace. Video games demonstrate how we are already moving in this direction.

Now consider that I could in the morning be Mayor of Simville, Mayor Gustav Ernest Jones for instance. But three hours later I have become Batman fighting the Joker in Gotham.

We think the gamer remains him or herself, the same person.

But one minute he/she was a tubby moustached Mayor in California, the next a fit caped crusader on the Atlantic coast.

In an ever more virtualised society how will people remain definable entities? Is 'oneself' in a post flesh age a solid state?

Darth Vader meanwhile seems a caveman in his clunky old school cybersuit.

Better add it to the Three Laws of Robotics and make it the Four Laws.

Some people will tell you that the Asimovian laws are obsolete, but I've always failed to find any problem with them.  However, if you've read Robots and Empire you know there is already four laws, so this would make No. 5 although it should be No. 1.
